    Spoof documentaries once skewered subjects by dialling comic ingenuity up to 11, but the genre has stagnated – replaced by showbiz puff pieces and right-wing provocations. Has their time passed?

    In the satirical mockumentary The Moment, Charli xcx fears (and eventually embraces) the death of Brat summer, the cultural sensation that made her sixth album a phenomenon. But the film – which stars the singer as a fictionalised version of herself – strains to land jokes out of Charli’s identity crisis and lacks the giddily intoxicating rush of that 2024 album. Watching The Moment shortly after its lukewarm reception at Sundance, I sensed something dying, but it wasn’t Brat – it was the mockumentary style itself.

    From Mother Mary to The Moment – The Evolution of the Popstar Thriller

    In Charli xcx’s recent mockumentary The Moment, which satirises the past zeitgeist of Brat Summer, there is one particular standout moment of dark humour. As Charli prepares for her tour, she hosts a fan meet and greet. It is awkward in the way you might anticipate. Fans bring gifts and monologue about how Charli saved their lives. It makes for an uncomfortable watch and crucially, breaks the fourth wall, to remind the audience how unnatural being a popstar in 2026 really is. This theme looks set to carry through into XCX’s next project, albeit with significantly darker undertones. In a Vogue interview last year, Hathaway described the role as “the most challenging” of her career due to the film’s intensity. Although The Moment is a semi-autobiographical take on XCX’s own experiences of fame, her next Hollywood project Mother Mary, which she and Jack Antonoff have produced the soundtrack for, is a bigger budget take on similar themes.

In this mockumentary-style satire, Aitchison and Aidan Zamiri, The Moment’s director, transport us back to 2024 as they present a fictionalised version of the lead up to Charli’s debut arena tour. The film hinges on presenting the industry pressures that Charli felt to capitalise on what she is repeatedly told will be the peak of the career, as well as her personal conflict in letting go of the Brat era.
