Ukraine marks Independence Day as UK vows support despite Russia's threats

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has used a defiant speech on Ukraine's Independence Day to declare that the country wants peace but will not just surrender to Russia at any price, as foreign leaders pledged their support.

Backyard bird feeding could be a bird flu ‘superspreader’. An expert explains

Backyard bird feeding is one of our country’s most popular pastimes. Research reveals about half of Australian households feed wild birds, with many people doing so daily.

However, this practice could act as a superspreader event – where a disease infects an unusually high number of people or animals – of the H5N1 virus. This deadly strain of bird flu has already decimated wild bird and mammal populations worldwide. It is now spreading across Australia, most recently killing more than 1,000 crested terns and a long-nosed fur seal, the first detection in a mainland mammal.

Although many Australians feed wild birds, the practice is controversial. This is mainly due to concerns about people offering unsuitable foods and birds becoming dependent on humans.

Bird flu suspected in second seal as ‘mass mortality’ event warned

A suspected case of H5 bird flu has been found in a seal in South Australian waters.

The suspected case, involving a long-nosed fur seal at The Pages Conservation Park, was reported with four other suspected bird cases today.

If confirmed, it would be the second case of H5 bird flu in an Australian mammal after the virus was detected in a seal found dead at Beachport last week.

No new confirmed cases have been reported, with the state’s total of H5 bird flu events remaining at 194.

Monday marks 15 years since deadly April 27 tornado outbreak in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Monday marks 15 years since the devastating April 27, 2011, super tornado outbreak that hit Alabama and many other states.

Over a span of four days, about 360 tornadoes touched down across 26 states, leaving catastrophic destruction in their wake, but it was the 27th that will live forever in the memories of so many.

WSFA 12 News will air a digital-only special for the 15th anniversary of the April 27th tornado outbreak Monday. This hour long special will air at 6:30 p.m. on our website, news and smart TV apps, and at the top of this article.

On that one day, 253 people lost their lives, and more than 2,000 others were injured as Alabama was pummeled again and again by 62 confirmed tornadoes.

Spoof documentaries once skewered subjects by dialling comic ingenuity up to 11, but the genre has stagnated â€“ replaced by showbiz puff pieces and right-wing provocations. Has their time passed?

In the satirical mockumentary The Moment, Charli xcx fears (and eventually embraces) the death of Brat summer, the cultural sensation that made her sixth album a phenomenon. But the film â€“ which stars the singer as a fictionalised version of herself â€“ strains to land jokes out of Charliâ€™s identity crisis and lacks the giddily intoxicating rush of that 2024 album. Watching The Moment shortly after its lukewarm reception at Sundance, I sensed something dying, but it wasnâ€™t Brat â€“ it was the mockumentary style itself.

From Mother Mary to The Moment – The Evolution of the Popstar Thriller

In Charli xcx’s recent mockumentary The Moment, which satirises the past zeitgeist of Brat Summer, there is one particular standout moment of dark humour. As Charli prepares for her tour, she hosts a fan meet and greet. It is awkward in the way you might anticipate. Fans bring gifts and monologue about how Charli saved their lives. It makes for an uncomfortable watch and crucially, breaks the fourth wall, to remind the audience how unnatural being a popstar in 2026 really is. This theme looks set to carry through into XCX’s next project, albeit with significantly darker undertones. In a Vogue interview last year, Hathaway described the role as “the most challenging” of her career due to the film’s intensity. Although The Moment is a semi-autobiographical take on XCX’s own experiences of fame, her next Hollywood project Mother Mary, which she and Jack Antonoff have produced the soundtrack for, is a bigger budget take on similar themes.
