Kejelcha breaks men's half marathon world record by 29 seconds
Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha has broken the men's half marathon world record, winning a World Athletics road race in Buenos Aires on Sunday in 56 minutes 51 seconds.
The 29-year-old previously held the record with a time of 57:30, set in Valencia in October 2024, but lost that to Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in March.
Kiplimo ran 57:20 in Lisbon earlier this year but Kejelcha has now knocked 29 seconds off that time to regain the record, subject to official ratification.
The world track silver medallist in the 10,000m also holds the world record for a men's 10,000m road race.
He also became one of the first men to run a sub-two hour marathon in record-eligible conditions earlier this year when finishing second behind Kenya's Sebastian Sawe in the London Marathon.

Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha broke the half marathon world record with a 56:51s run over 13.1 miles in Buenos Aires, Argentina, taking back a record that he held between October 2024 and March this year.
He won by more than two minutes in a 1-2-3 for Ethiopia, as Tadese Worku came second and also broke the hour mark (59:18s), while Bereket Nega finished third in 1:00:17s.
This is the second time in five months that this record has been broken, with Kejelcha going 29 seconds better than Jacob Kiplimo’s 57:20s run in Lisbon, Portugal, this March. It’s the first year since 2007 to see multiple revisions of the best men’s half marathon time, as Kejelcha and Kiplimo continue to better one another — collectively they hold seven of the fastest 11 performances over this distance.

Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha regained the world half marathon record*, running 56:51 at the Media Maratón Ciudad de Buenos Aires, a World Athletics Label road race, in the Argentinean capital on Sunday (23).
With that performance, Kejelcha took 29 seconds off the world record of 57:20* set by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon in March – a mark that is pending ratification – to regain a world record he set in Valencia in October 2024 with a 57:30 clocking.
Kiplimo had clocked 56:42 in Barcelona last year, but it could not be ratified as a world record because the race conditions were not fully compliant with World Athletics rules.
