Silver’s industrial demand, mining dynamics and free float mean price rally might not impact supply until it overwhelms it – Sprott’s Zhu

Kitco NEWS has a diverse team of journalists reporting on the economy, stock markets, commodities, cryptocurrencies, mining and metals with accuracy and objectivity. Our goal is to help people make informed market decisions through in-depth reporting, daily market roundups, interviews with prominent industry figures, comprehensive coverage (often exclusive) of important industry events and analyses of market-affecting developments.

(Kitco News) – Silver has key differentiators that insulate the impacts of the price action from the underlying supply and demand dynamics – but when investors do pile into silver, the grey metal’s constrained physical supply means the market can go parabolic in a way that gold is unlikely to ever do, according to Kenny Zhu, Director of Research and Investment Strategy at Sprott.

Why silver’s market floor has changed

In this interview, The Silver Institute President and CEO Michael DiRienzo breaks down the structural shifts transforming the global silver market as it decouples from traditional gold-correlated trading patterns.

A cumulative 762 million-ounce (Moz) market deficit over the last five years — equivalent to a full year of global mine output — has left silver facing a severe supply squeeze, compounded by its status as a critical mineral.

While mining companies scale exploration, byproduct limitations continue to constrain supply growth. At the same time, expanding industrial demand across solar energy, electric vehicles (EVs), AI data centres, and nuclear power is setting higher price floors for the metal. This is reinforcing silver’s dual role as both an indispensable technology input and a strategic portfolio hedge.

Silver Price Forecast: China’s Solar Slowdown Threatens Demand

Silver (XAG) trades near $59 an ounce and remains under pressure as the market receives mixed signals from China. Strong exports and policy support could support industrial demand. But rising factory costs and a slowdown in the solar sector increase the risks. The high bond yields also pressure silver because the metal pays no interest. In my view, silver remains vulnerable as it approaches support at $57.50. This article presents the latest developments in China, the main risks to silver prices and the key support and resistance levels to understand the next move in silver.

Mining billionaire Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue and its Taiwanese partner are suing a subcontractor on a trouble-plagued pipeline that has heaped pressure on their $6.2 billion Iron Bridge magnetite project.

Mining giant Fortescue has kicked off legal proceedings over what it claims are defects in the pipeline connecting the Canning Basin to its multibillion-dollar Iron Bridge magnetite project in WA’s Pilbara region.

However, the company maintains the issues relating to the faulty pipes have not impacted the major magnetite project and its production guidance remains unchanged.

The Andrew Forrest-led company is one of three plaintiffs heading legal action filed in the WA Supreme Court this week seeking damages from faulty pipes.

Iron Bridge is owned under a joint venture between FMG Magnetite and Formosa Steel.

Azerbaijan to help Uzbekistan develop mining sector

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are strengthening economic connections, signing a variety of agreements covering mining, banking and tourism.

Uzbek Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ali Asadov, presided June 16 over a signing ceremony in Tashkent of a cooperation agreement under which the two countries will jointly develop an Uzbek gold deposit as well as other mineral resources.

Ural Yusupov, Uzbekistan’s deputy mining minister, previously indicated that Tashkent was intent on conducting comprehensive surveys of precious metal deposits in the Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions, along with critical mineral deposits in Karakalpakstan and the Jizzakh region.

The Azerbaijani entity CJSC AzerGold will be the chief partner in developing the Uzbek gold deposit. It appears that Uzbek officials are interested in gaining experience in the processing and marketing of gold products. The Azerbaijani state-owned company bills itself as having experience in building “an integrated value chain for the exploration and development of ore deposits, production, processing and sales of precious metals.”

Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan Sign Documents in Presence of Both Countries’ PMs

Several documents have been signed between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, in the presence of both countries' Prime Ministers, Ali Asadov and Abdulla Aripov, in Tashkent.

The ceremony took place as part of Asadov’s working visit to Uzbekistan to attend the 5th Tashkent International Investment Forum at the invitation of the Uzbek side, The Caspian Post reports via Azertac.

The signed agreements cover the joint development of a gold mining project in Uzbekistan by AzerGold CJSC, enhanced banking cooperation between the International Bank of Azerbaijan OJSC and a partner financial institution in Uzbekistan, as well as collaboration on critical minerals projects involving NEQSOL Holding.

Live: Mega mining company back on cards as Glencore confirms Rio Tinto talks

Glencore has confirmed media speculation that the company is back in merger talks with Rio Tinto.

Meanwhile, the ASX 200 is heading into Friday after choppy trade on Wall Street overnight.

Follow the day's financial news and insights from our specialist business reporters on our live blog.

Not surprised by the EV pullback. Most people that want one have one, and given the horrendous resale values, most who bought won't be upgrading too often you'd imagine.

Well it looks like Aussie investors aren't loving the terms of this merger deal talk between Rio Tinto and Glencore.

Rio Tinto, which is dual listed on the ASX, has just opened around 5% lower in very early trade.

Rio Tinto and Glencore say they are in discussions to merge in a move that would create one of the world’s largest mining companies and a copper production powerhouse in a major shake-up of the resources sector.

The London-listed Glencore said it was in “preliminary discussions … about a possible combination of some or all of their businesses, which could include an all-share merger between Rio Tinto and Glencore”.
