Rio Tinto and Glencore say they are in discussions to merge in a move that would create one of the world’s largest mining companies and a copper production powerhouse in a major shake-up of the resources sector.

The London-listed Glencore said it was in “preliminary discussions … about a possible combination of some or all of their businesses, which could include an all-share merger between Rio Tinto and Glencore”.
