Newcastle struggle to find cutting edge in drab stalemate with Wolves

Newcastle arrived at Molineux in retro shirts to bring back memories of David Ginola and Les Ferdinand but there was no swagger or flair in their goalless draw against Wolves. There was the potential to go fifth in the Premier League with a win for the Magpies but they toiled on their way to a point instead.

With two-thirds of possession throughout the game, Newcastle must have expected to come away with more but they possessed neither the creativity nor finishing. Wolves were worthy of the draw, which leaves them three points shy of Derby’s worst-ever tally of 11, a total many at Molineux, at Christmas, feared would not be overcome.

Wolves 0-0 Newcastle (19 Jan, 2026) Game Analysis

Wolves extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four matches after they battled to a goalless draw with Newcastle at Molineux.

Wolves fans arrived at the stadium without their usual fear of losing games — following their recent good run — and their team did not allow Eddie Howe's side to register a shot on target in a low key first period.

José Sá remained untroubled in the Wolves goal before he was needed late on to keep out Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, which was needed to earn his side an eighth point of the campaign.

Newcastle have found life quite tough away from St James' Park and another laboured performance in the final third means they have still won just two games on the road this season and missed the chance to climb into the top six.

Premier League predictions and best bets: Shock on the cards? Wolves tipped to beat Newcastle

Our football betting expert Jones Knows provides his insight across the Premier League weekend.

Bournemouth's away games this season are bonkers. They're averaging 4.8 goals per game on the road. Nope, not a typo. Yes, almost five goals per game.

The markets are fully aligned for goals in this one though, which naturally pushes us toward the anytime goalscorer angle.

And who better to target than Kaoru Mitoma? The Japanese winger is starting to look like his old sparky, nightmare-for-defenders self. His movement, bursts in behind and instinct for goal are all back in evidence – as shown by his goal vs Manchester City.

Ins & Outs: Wanderers v Newcastle Jets

Head coach Alen Stajcic has named his extended squad for Saturday night’s clash against Newcastle Jets at CommBank Stadium.

Western Sydney Wanderers return to CommBank Stadium on Saturday night looking to build on last week’s important 1-0 victory over Melbourne Victory, a result that lifted the Red & Black off the bottom of the Isuzu UTE A-League ladder and ended a five-game winless run.

Kosta Barbarouses proved the difference at AAMI Park, converting from the spot against his former club, while the Wanderers’ defensive unit stood firm under sustained pressure, limiting Victory to just two shots on target despite heavy possession.

Wonderful pass from Scott plays in Jiminez just before the half-time break. The Bournemouth man never looked convincing as he advanced on goal and Ramsdale shuts him down. That was a big chance. Bournemouth looking very tired but still creating chances.

Woltemade slips in Barnes again, the winger looks offside but the pass just gets away from him. We’ll have a couple of minutes more for injuries after Thiaw got some treatment.

A couple of minutes left in the first half of extra time. Not much to report.

Manchester City player ratings vs Exeter City: Antoine Semenyo is up and running! £65m signing scores and assists as Pep Guardiola's youthful side score TEN in incredible FA Cup rout

Manchester City opened up their FA Cup campaign with a barely believable 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the third round on Saturday. Antoine Semenyo scored and assisted on his debut for the Cityzens, while youngster Max Alleyne also netted his first goal for the club, as Pep Guardiola's side swept aside their League One opponents at the Etihad Stadium.

In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, Exeter were almost in dreamland when defender Ed Turns rose highest inside the penalty area, but his header was well-saved by City’s cup goalkeeper James Trafford after five minutes.

After overcoming the scare, City soon took the lead when centre-back Alleyne, who only made his debut for the club in Wednesday’s Premier League draw with Brighton and Hove Albion, bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble just seven minutes later.

Afcon: Mohamed Hussein hits the bar and on the follow-up an off-balance Salum fires over with the goal wide open. Tanzania so close.

Boos are becoming an increasingly frequent fixture at the end of Tottenham games. After travelling supporters had voiced their anger at the goalless draw at Brentford on Thursday, it was the home fans’ turn to vent their frustrations after a result against Sunderland that could easily have been worse.

After a promising first-half display and Ben Davies’ opener, this draw will be even more disappointing for Thomas Frank having seen how his team were outplayed after the break by a Sunderland team still heavily depleted by players away on international duty. Brian Brobbey’s 80th-minute equaliser came at a time when the visitors were considerably the better side and perhaps looked like taking all three points.

Even with the postponed match in hand, Auckland FC remain on top of the Isuzu UTE A-League table, Steve Corica’s side only having lost the one match so far this season.

Newcastle keep on scoring, but they keep on conceding as well. The Jets equalised three times against Macarthur FC, yet still couldn’t hold on for a result. The pick of their goals was Eli Adams’s perfectly struck long-range free kick, which found the corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Pundits ‘staggered’ as Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon denied ‘stonewall penalty’ against Chelsea

Pundits were “staggered” as Newcastle were denied a “stonewall penalty” against Chelsea after Anthony Gordon went down in the box under the challenge of Trevoh Chalobah.

Newcastle forward Gordon was played into the Chelsea penalty area and looked to try and shield the ball from the oncoming defender Chalobah close to the byline.

But Gordon was knocked over by Chalobah when the centre-back crashed into him, in contact deemed by VAR to be a “side-to-side in a shielding action”.

The incident was seen by on-field referee Andy Madley and checked by VAR Peter Bankes, who quickly agreed with the initial decision and waved played on.

ST JAMES' PARK — Chelsea rallied from a dismal first-half performance to claim a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

A brace by Nick Woltemade, six days on from his Tyne-Wear derby nightmare, put Eddie Howe's men in command against their bedraggled visitors.

Enzo Maresca's future at Stamford Bridge has been under the microscope over the past week but his team produced a superb response in adversity. Captain Reece James reduced the arrears courtesy of a magnificent free-kick and Joao Pedro seized upon a slip from Malik Thiaw to level matters midway through the second period.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to beat Newcastle while Leverkusen stunned a much-changed Manchester City

That’s all for tonight’s coverage. Thanks as always for your company and emails; goodnight.

Newcastle cannot complain they were not warned. Eddie Howe had cautioned his players that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was “as good as ever’ and would need to be “controlled” but ultimately they proved powerless to prevent the 36-year-old transforming both the match and Marseille’s Champions League ambitions.

While Aubameyang fulfilled the soaring expectations of a raucously loud audience at this stupendously designed, wonderfully atmospheric arena, Howe’s team started well but ended up mugged in the manner of naive tourists who had wandered into the wrong arrondissement of this beguiling yet sometimes brutal city.

GOAL! Olympiacos 2-3 Real Madrid (Taremi 52). Mehdi Taremi’s header reduces Olympiacos’s arrears … and here’s a reminder that Real don’t have the best record in Greece. It couldn’t be happening again, could it?

A Spurs corner comes in from the left. Richarlison wins a header at the far stick. Archie Gray hooks it goalwards from close range, but Willian Pacho clears off the line. No matter, though, because PSG loanee Randal Kolo Muani is on hand to absolutely lash home from eight yards. Spurs retake the lead! PSG stunned!

Atlético Madrid 1-0 Internazionale. Seconds into the second half, Nicolò Barella nearly equalises for last season’s runners-up. He’s pinged into space down the inside-right channel, taking the ball down and looping a delicious shot over Juan Musso, towards the top-left corner, and off the bar.
