Merseyside Police said the 43-year-old, from Widnes, is accused of section 18 wounding with intent, along with a second man, Gary O'Grady, 50, from Huyton.

Emergency services were called at around 9pm on Sunday after a man suffered serious injuries to his face and body near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Barton and O'Grady are due to appear at Wirral Magistrates' Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier, at a High Court hearing on Tuesday over a libel claim involving Barton, Gervase de Wilde, representing former England forward Eni Aluko, said his instructing solicitor had "received a call from a duty solicitor in a police station in Liverpool" shortly before the hearing.

Newcastle star Sandro Tonali tipped for Juventus move by Italy legend

Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio has tipped Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali to join Serie A giants Juventus in the future. The Azzurri star played for AC Milan before joining the Magpies in 2023 and has gone on to become an important player under Eddie Howe at St James' Park. However, he has frequently been tipped to return to his homeland later in his career.

Tonali came through the youth ranks at Brescia before being snapped up by Serie A giants AC Milan in 2020, initially on loan before the move was made a permanent one. He won the Serie A title in 2021-22 at San Siro but left a year later, becoming the most expensive Italian footballer ever when Newcastle forked out €70 million (£61m/$83m) to take him to St James' Park.

United States midfielder Weston McKennie is on the verge of signing a new contract with Juventus, sources have told ESPN.

McKennie's current contract is up at the end of the season, but he is set to sign a fresh deal through to 2030 with the Serie A giants.

McKennie, 27, has been an integral part of the team under Luciano Spalletti, who took charge in October.

He has been used in a variety of positions this term, operating at full-back, on the wing, in central midfield and even a makeshift forward against Galatasaray.

USMNT star Weston McKennie finally set to sign new Juventus contract to become one of highest-paid players at Allianz Stadium

USMNT star Weston McKennie has, according to reports in Italy, finally agreed a new contract with Juventus. Fresh terms will bring transfer talk to the close, as the United States international has been heading towards free agency. It is claimed that the versatile midfielder’s new deal will see him become one of the top earners with Serie A heavyweights.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that McKennie has agreed an extension with Juve through to the summer of 2030. His previous deal was due to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Speculation regarding his future has raged for some time.

Newcastle United face Qarabag FK in Azerbaijan on Wednesday evening, as they look to make it through to the Champions League Round of 16.

Newcastle come into this game in a rather upbeat mood, after two impressive wins in their last two games — first in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur, when they won 2-1, before an impressive 3-1 away win in the FA Cup against Aston Villa.

Qarabag, on the other hand, have had a slight blip domestically, following their 6-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in their last game of the Champions League league phase. They lost 2-1 to Shamakhi in the first leg of their Azerbaijan Cup quarterfinal, and have only managed wins by narrow margins on either side of that loss. So, it will take a big effort from Qarabag to take a lead to Newcastle in the second leg.

Latest. Elanga's praise for Howe as Magpies prepare for Qarabağ

Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has heaped praise on head coach Eddie Howe after the Magpies' recent revival – but warned that consistency is key for his side as they look to make it three wins in a row at Qarabağ on Wednesday evening (kick-off 5:45pm GMT).

Howe's charges have beaten Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and Aston Villa in the FA Cup in the past week, and now head to Baku to face Azerbaijani opponents in the Champions League knockout phase play-off first leg.

The encouraging sequence of results follows a dip in form for Newcastle, and Elanga – whose own displays have caught the eye in recent weeks – lauded the influence of the head coach who brought him to Tyneside from Nottingham Forest in the summer.

Confirmed line up: Four changes for Qarabağ clash, Joelinton on bench

Nick Pope, Joe Willock, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon all come in for the first leg match at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium in Baku, the Magpies' first ever knockout fixture in the star-studded competition.

Pope, an unused substitute in Saturday's Emirates FA Cup fourth round win against Aston Villa, returns in-between the sticks in place of Aaron Ramsdale.

Kieran Trippier, nearing 150 club appearances, captains the visitors in Azerbaijan while Malick Thiaw, Dan Burn and Lewis Hall all retain their spots in the defensive backline.

Willock, who scored in last month's 1-1 draw against Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, replaces Jacob Ramsey in the middle of the park and will feature alongside Sandro Tonali, who netted twice in United's FA Cup victory at Aston Villa last weekend.

For Villa, these fans have been deprived for a while [from winning a trophy], and they probably feel with the football they play, and the squad depth they have got, they have a great chance of winning a trophy.

Unai Emery has made it clear that the Premier League is his priority.

Burnley turfed out of FA Cup on perfect day for Reed and Mansfield

Mansfield gave blood and sweat to reach the FA Cup fifth round by shocking a Burnley side intent on boring everyone to tears. A stunning Louis Reed free-kick completed a hard-fought turnaround for the League One side against their labouring Premier League opponents.

There is little doubt that Burnley are getting relegated, leaving the Cup as their only hope of salvaging a desperate season but they lacked quality from start to finish on another desperate day for Scott Parker. Mansfield were not necessarily the better side but worked harder for the victory.

Burnley made nine changes from their surprise win against Crystal Palace in midweek. It was unsurprising that Ashley Barnes was a bit rusty, having played only 138 minutes this season prior to kick-off, although he would have expected to find the net early on when Quilindschy Hartman sent the ball across for him to tap in, only to slide it wide, despite being under no pressure.

Aston Villa host Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with both sides looking to put a cup run together after bowing out of the Carabao Cup this season.

Unai Emery's side come into this game in good spirits after a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion that saw them edge closer to Premier League leaders Arsenal. Eddie Howe's men also pulled off a 2-1 win away to Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, which saw Thomas Frank sacked.

Newcastle have won three of their last six against Villa, who have won twice themselves, but what this fixture guarantees is goals — with 20 goals scored in the last six games.

Love is in the air this Saturday as Newcastle United take on Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Valentine’s Day. I don’t think anyone’s ever put ‘romance’ and ‘Birmingham’ in the same sentence, but that’s the magic of the cup!

Our last time out against the West Midlands Finest was only a few short weeks ago – and it was a very sorry affair indeed. An early goal from Buendia and a late goal from Watkins gave the Villains their first win on Tyneside since 2005, when Bowyer and Dyer had less-than-romantic feelings towards each other. The first half wasn’t too bad, with close chances for both Tonali and Miley. However, the second half was just so stale that Aston Villa didn’t need to get out of second gear.

A place in the fifth round is up for grabs in this all-EPL encounter at Villa Park on Valentine's Day.

Two English Premier League teams, both dealing with injuries, will need to dig deep into their reserves today as Aston Villa hosts Newcastle United in a compelling FA Cup fourth-round match-up.

Currently third in the EPL, Villa reached the semifinals of this tournament last term. But an injury list that includes John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and Matty Cash means there's a selection headache for manager Unai Emery coming into today's game.

Newcastle still have a formidable home record this season. Before the 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa a fortnight ago, they’d not actually been toppled at St James’s Park in the Premier League since Arsenal beat them 2-1 in September. The FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Bournemouth and the Carabao Cup shellacking by Manchester City have obviously dented the confidence somewhat, but on their home patch Eddie Howe’s side are strong.

It’s around about this time that I ask you for your score predictions – send them to me via email if you wish.

Latest. Eddie Howe's team news update: Gordon, Bruno latest ahead of Brentford visit

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says there is "every chance" Anthony Gordon will miss this weekend's Premier League visit of Brentford – but hopes the winger's injury isn't a "serious" one.

Gordon was forced off during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday night, with the Magpies head coach confirming the England international had a hamstring problem.

United are back in league action against the Bees at St. James' Park on Saturday evening (kick-off 5:30pm GMT) and Howe is optimistic that Gordon – as well as captain Bruno Guimarães and midfielder Lewis Miley – could be fit enough to feature against Keith Andrews' men.

“Everyone else has come through a difficult game, for obvious reasons, having gone down to 10 men so early. It’s testament to the place we’re in – physically as a team. We’re pretty much as we were.

Chelsea 1-0 Pafos (22 Jan, 2026) Game Analysis

Chelsea will go into the final Champions League matchday in an automatic qualification spot after Moises Caicedo's late header earned a nervy 1-0 win against Pafos at Stamford Bridge.

For a long time, head coach Liam Rosenior's first European game in charge looked like it was heading towards a bleak conclusion, the rookie visitors from Cyprus holding out admirably as Chelsea pressure grew and with it a tetchiness inside the ground.

A desperately poor first half of ponderous sideways passing prompted the urgency and alarm for a more direct approach after the break.

It took until the 76th minute though, with Chelsea facing the prospect of needing to win away to Napoli next week and favours from elsewhere in order to scrape a top-eight finish, Caicedo barreled into a header to rescue his side.

Newcastle struggle to find cutting edge in drab stalemate with Wolves

Newcastle arrived at Molineux in retro shirts to bring back memories of David Ginola and Les Ferdinand but there was no swagger or flair in their goalless draw against Wolves. There was the potential to go fifth in the Premier League with a win for the Magpies but they toiled on their way to a point instead.

With two-thirds of possession throughout the game, Newcastle must have expected to come away with more but they possessed neither the creativity nor finishing. Wolves were worthy of the draw, which leaves them three points shy of Derby’s worst-ever tally of 11, a total many at Molineux, at Christmas, feared would not be overcome.

Wolves 0-0 Newcastle (19 Jan, 2026) Game Analysis

Wolves extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four matches after they battled to a goalless draw with Newcastle at Molineux.

Wolves fans arrived at the stadium without their usual fear of losing games — following their recent good run — and their team did not allow Eddie Howe's side to register a shot on target in a low key first period.

José Sá remained untroubled in the Wolves goal before he was needed late on to keep out Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, which was needed to earn his side an eighth point of the campaign.

Newcastle have found life quite tough away from St James' Park and another laboured performance in the final third means they have still won just two games on the road this season and missed the chance to climb into the top six.

Premier League predictions and best bets: Shock on the cards? Wolves tipped to beat Newcastle

Bournemouth's away games this season are bonkers. They're averaging 4.8 goals per game on the road. Nope, not a typo. Yes, almost five goals per game.

The markets are fully aligned for goals in this one though, which naturally pushes us toward the anytime goalscorer angle.

And who better to target than Kaoru Mitoma? The Japanese winger is starting to look like his old sparky, nightmare-for-defenders self. His movement, bursts in behind and instinct for goal are all back in evidence – as shown by his goal vs Manchester City.

Manchester City player ratings vs Exeter City: Antoine Semenyo is up and running! £65m signing scores and assists as Pep Guardiola's youthful side score TEN in incredible FA Cup rout

Manchester City opened up their FA Cup campaign with a barely believable 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the third round on Saturday. Antoine Semenyo scored and assisted on his debut for the Cityzens, while youngster Max Alleyne also netted his first goal for the club, as Pep Guardiola's side swept aside their League One opponents at the Etihad Stadium.

In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, Exeter were almost in dreamland when defender Ed Turns rose highest inside the penalty area, but his header was well-saved by City’s cup goalkeeper James Trafford after five minutes.

After overcoming the scare, City soon took the lead when centre-back Alleyne, who only made his debut for the club in Wednesday’s Premier League draw with Brighton and Hove Albion, bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble just seven minutes later.
