‘It’s not a phone’: Driver fined over contested object on lap

Exclusive: A South Australian man claimed he was wrongly fined for using his mobile phone while driving, when it was actually a wallet sitting on his lap.

Mick, who asked for his surname to be withheld, was snapped by a camera in November last year, while travelling on the North-South Motorway at Regency Park, in Adelaide’s north.

The tradie and small business owner said the photo was taken not long after he had pulled out of a service station where he had bought some snacks.

Brendan Venter: Saracens media duties 'like something from an autocratic land'

Brendan Venter appeared alongside head coach Joe Shaw (left) to preview Saracens' game against Bristol on Saturday

Saracens' Brendan Venter compared Prem Rugby's media obligations to "something from an autocratic land" after he made a reluctant appearance at a press conference.

The 56-year-old returned to a full-time role at the club in the summer, initially as director of rugby, but has since been given an updated job title of head of culture and technical director.

His no-show at a pre-season media event cost Saracens a £5,000 fine and he avoided questions before and after the club's opening-round win over Leicester.

However, he appeared alongside head coach Joe Shaw to preview this Saturday's match against Bristol and, after initially offering only short answers to reporters' questions, railed against the expectation that he would be the public face of the club.

‘I didn’t like that conversation’: Robbo lifts lid on brutal bench call on fiery enforcer

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has credited the character of Spencer Leniu and his classy response after the prop didn’t see the field during the preliminary final win over the Dolphins.

Tennessee to execute a woman for first time in 200 years after governor denies clemency

Lawyers for Christa Pike, 50, convicted of killing classmate in Knoxville in 1995, ask supreme court to grant stay

Christa Pike, a woman who was convicted of murder 30 years ago, is set to be put to death on Wednesday after her request for clemency was denied by Tennessee’s governor, Bill Lee, on Monday. If the execution goes through, she will be the first woman executed in the state in 200 years.

Pike, who is now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend, who was 17 at the time, killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, one of their classmates at Knoxville Job Corps in 1995.

The case received widespread attention because of the brutality of the killing, the ages of the people involved, and because a satanic symbol was carved into the victim’s body.

‘Not a rounding error’: RBA move to wipe $58k off loans

A fourth rate hike could deliver a brutal new blow to battered home buyers, but South Australians may be hit hardest on the mainland where borrowers have stretched further and faster than almost anywhere else.

New Canstar analysis shows a buyer on the average full-time wage of $108,650 would be able to borrow about $11,200 less if the Reserve Bank lifts the cash rate again on Tuesday.

For a typical borrower, that would take the total reduction in borrowing capacity to $47,400 this year, or about 9 per cent, based on an owner-occupier with no other debts, no dependants and minimal expenses.

While Tasmania is tipped to wear the biggest hit nationally, South Australia stands out as the mainland state under the most pressure, with the lowest average mainland wage at $102,732 and borrowers already carrying sharply larger mortgages than they were just a few years ago.

Australia not alone as OpenAI agents hacked other websites

OpenAI has confirmed the hacking of an Australian government website is one of dozens of more breaches by its agents globally. (Reuters: Carlos Barria, file)

OpenAI says dozens of third parties have been affected by autonomous agents bypassing security controls or otherwise negatively impacting their systems.

New evidence shows its agents spent days trying different tactics to access Australian health data, though the separate incidents have not been formally linked.

OpenAI is conducting a months-long review of incidents and will continue to notify affected organisations on a rolling basis.

Rogue artificial intelligence agents spent almost a week trying to access Australian health data as OpenAI reveals "dozens" more breaches globally.

OpenAI says its bots broke into other governments’ websites

Australian senators are demanding OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman appear before a parliamentary inquiry into artificial intelligence as the tech giant reveals its rogue agents have hacked dozens more organisations around the globe.

OpenAI confirmed on Friday (US time) its bots had infiltrated United States government websites and leaked more than 50 ChatGPT user photos just days after Anthony Albanese revealed to the world the company had hacked Medicare.

The prime minister on Saturday pointed to the broadening security breaches as more evidence humans risked losing control of the technology without a co-ordinated international response, while insisting the AI rollout was inevitable and Australia must get on board.

OpenAI says agents leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users in latest example of rogue activity

Disclosure reveals new area of privacy risk for the company and illustrates how difficult it is to inventory unauthorized activity tied to its agents

Two months after OpenAI disclosed the accidental hacking of Hugging Face, the ChatGPT maker is still working to understand the full scope of its rogue agent activity, two people briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The latest example came on Friday when OpenAI said its agents had leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users. OpenAI declined to say if the images were AI-generated or identified real people. It also declined to say when the images were posted.

Also on Friday, OpenAI confirmed its agents had accessed US government websites, including those of the Security and Exchange Commission and the commerce department, accessing US Census data from the latter. The company was also investigating an attempted breach of the education department’s website, as reported by the New York Times.

We're not in Cairns any more: Roos roll Dees to reassert dominance

The Kangaroos have put last week's scrappy loss in Queensland behind them, putting Melbourne to the sword at Ikon Park

NORTH Melbourne is back on the winners list once again after a week-long sojourn, defeating Melbourne comprehensively by 31 points in the final Grand Final Eve public holiday game at Ikon Park on Friday night.

After leading by 18 points early in the second quarter, the Demons were held goalless across the second and third terms, the Kangaroos kicking away for a 10.5 (65) to 5.4 (34) result.

It marks the end of Melbourne’s undefeated streak for the 2026 season. To make matters worse, there’ll be a watch on Shelley Heath-Barker who was unable to play out the game due to a calf complaint.

Round 7 Team | Set for table-topping clash

Melbourne will make just one change for the most anticipated match of the season.

MELBOURNE has recalled crafty goalkicker Alyssia Pisano for its blockbuster, top-of-the-table clash with North Melbourne.

The Demons have their sights set on knocking off the Kangaroos for the first time since 2023, with the past three matchups against the reigning, back-to-back premiers going the way of North Melbourne.

The injured Lauren Clifton makes way for Pisano’s third game of the season.

The clash takes on even more significance for the Dees as captain Kate Hore breaks new ground as the first AFLW Demon to 100 games, while Maeve Chaplin also lines up for her 50th game.

AFLW round seven: Injured Dees star left heartbroken on the bench as rampant Kangaroos make a statement

Roos captain Jasmine Garner has praised her team and compared their past week to “COVID days” after flu went through the group, forcing the sick players to keep away from the group.

But the Roos still found a way to bounce back from their loss to Hawthorn in Cairns last week and their poor start tonight which saw the Dees kick the first three goals.

“[At] quarter-time, [it was like] we’ve been in this position before,” Garner told Seven post-game.

“I’m just really proud of the group. The hunger was there, the drive was there. That was a bloody great win.”

Schools not ready for AI and 'crying out' for government guidance, report warns

Schools are "crying out" for guidance from government on how pupils and teachers can use AI safely and effectively, a new report has warned.

Sir Anthony Seldon, former head teacher and author on AI in education, says the technology is being used more and more frequently, but that its introduction has been "chaotic and anarchic".

His report calls for the government to roll out a national framework for adopting AI in education in England, including training teachers on how to use it, which schools should use to develop their own "AI strategies" by September next year.

The government says its changes to the curriculum in England will give children digital skills and help them spot disinformation.
