    Kyrgios says he will not be seeking an Aus Open wildcard

    Nick Kyrgios revealed he would not be seeking a wildcard exemption to the Australian Open. (AAP: Darren England)

    Nick Kyrgios has conceded he is not up to playing singles at the Australian Open, ruling himself out of a likely wildcard.

    The local crowd-puller was tipped to receive one of the three remaining wildcards from Tennis Australia.

    But he announced on social media on Friday he would only play doubles with great mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park, with the tournament getting underway on January 18.

    Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Kyrgios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking plummeting to 670.

    Australian Open boss Craig Tiley has backed Nick Kyrgios’ decision not to play singles at this year’s event, revealing he had not given the Wimbledon finalist any guarantee of a wildcard.

    Kyrgios, who turns 31 in April, announced on Friday that he instead wanted a singles wildcard to go to a player more prepared for the rigours of grand slam tennis. However, he plans to contest doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who he combined with to win the 2022 Australian Open title.

    “I am here to listen,” Pope Leo XIV said in his opening address of the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals taking place in the Vatican, on 7-8 January.

    The Pope began by expressing his joy at welcoming the Cardinals to Rome on the day after Epiphany, praying that the Holy Spirit may guide them during these two intense but important days of reflection and dialogue.

    The Pope said their day-and-a-half together “will point the way for our path ahead."

    “We must not arrive at a text," he said, "but continue a conversation that will help me in serving the mission of the entire Church.”

    Rome — Pope Leo XIV has summoned Catholic cardinals from around the world to the Vatican for a meeting called an "extraordinary consistory," to seek their guidance on the Catholic Church's priorities for the years ahead.

    "I am here to listen," Leo, a Chicago native and the first ever pope from the U.S., said Wednesday in his opening remarks. "This day-and-a-half together will point the way for our path ahead."

    Of the 245 members of the College of Cardinals, 170 of the so-called "princes of the church" were in Vatican City to participate in the gathering.  

    As it got underway, Leo asked the cardinals to select two of four possible topics for detailed discussions: The missionary nature of the church, further reforms of the Vatican bureaucracy, synodality and liturgy.

    David Warner blasted the highest individual score of the BBL season so far, but couldn't prevent a Tim Ward and Mitch Owen-inspired Hobart securing a six-wicket win over Sydney Thunder.

    Warner wound back the clock with an unbeaten 130 off 65 balls at Engie Stadium on Saturday night, whacking nine sixes and 11 fours to steer the Thunder to 4-205.

    But Ward (90 off 49) and Owen (45 off 18) responded with a 108-run opening partnership in just 51 balls to set the Hurricanes on track for a record run-chase at the Sydney Showground venue.

    David Warner's record century for Sydney Thunder in vain as reigning champs cruise to victory

    David Warner wound back the clock, smashing 130 off 65 balls for the Sydney Thunder on Saturday night – but it wasn't enough to lift his side to victory.

    The 39-year-old had a serious job to do to rescue their innings after both Matthew Gilkes and Sam Konstas were dismissed for golden ducks.

    Warner was up to the task, blasting nine sixes and 11 fours at a strike rate of 200.

    He produced the highest ever score by a Thunder batter, and became the fifth player to ever score 130 or more runs in a BBL knock, joining Glenn Maxwell (154), Marcus Stoinis (147), Josh Brown (140) and Matthew Wade (130).

    "You have two stories, we can turn things in one half to come back 3-1 and win this game and the second story, we have a centre-forward with Youssef [Chermiti] who scores fantastic goals.

    "We should enjoy, but tomorrow we have to be again, ready for the next game. This is a demanding league.

    Ashton Turner joined one of the Big Bash’s unluckiest clubs as he helped revive Perth’s season, his unbeaten 99 leading the Scorchers to a 71-run win over the Sydney Thunder.

    After coming to the wicket with the visitors 3-34 in the sixth over, Turner became just the fourth player in BBL history to be stranded on 99no as he took his side to 8-202 at ENGIE Stadium.

    The Thunder were then bowled out for 131 in reply in the 18th over, with the hosts unable to capitalise on a hot start from David Warner (25) and Matthew Gilkes (33).

    Turner’s massive innings overshadowed a catch of the tournament contender. On the final ball of the Scorchers’ first innings, Matthew Gilkes and Sam Konstas combined brilliantly on the rope to remove Joel Paris for a golden duck.
