    In an all-encompassing chat with fellow former Kiwi international Shaun Johnson, the decorated Tigers, Dragons, Brisbane and Rabbitohs playmaker said he had agreed to terms with the Gold Coast Titans for 2022 and 2023 in a move that would have seen him playing NRL until 38 years of age.

    Former Kiwis captain Benji Marshall has revealed why he retired from playing in the NRL and how his former coach, Wayne Bennett, was a key factor in the decision.

    The current Wests Tigers coach said he planned to join the Gold Coast Titans on a two-year deal after he played
    in the 2021 NRL Grand final with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but told Sky Sport’s League Lounge with Shaun Johnson that Bennett helped to change his mind.

    “I actually wasn’t going to retire when I retired,” Marshall told the broadcaster.

    “I had literally agreed verbally to go to the Gold Coast for two more years to keep playing.”

    NRL 2026: Titans, Magic Round team: Titans switch up pack as Chargers debut nears

    Josh Hannay has made one minor change for Sunday's showdown against the Knights at Magic Round as anticipation builds for the debut of the club's Chargers jersey.

    The highly-anticipated retro kit will be in full display at Suncorp Stadium with the heritage design celebrating 30 years since the iconic franchise’s inception.

    Moeaki Fotuaika – making his 173rd appearance to draw level with Mark Minichiello as the most capped Titan – has been named to start in place of Klese Haas, who returns to the bench.

    Second generation stars Jayden Campbell and Cooper Bai will headline the Gold Coast throwback, with their fathers Preston and Marcus having previously represented the Chargers.

    Official team lists, updates and injury news for Round 11 of the 2026 NRL Telstra Premiership.

    The new rules allow teams to carry six men on the interchange bench but only four are permitted to enter the action on game day.

    Two players will be omitted from the squads 24 hours out from the match, with the final 19 to be confirmed 90 minutes before kick-off.

    Sharks: A double boost for the Sharks with winger Ronaldo Mulitalo and centre Jesse Ramien returning for Magic Round. Mulitalo hasn't played since suffering an ACL injury playing for New Zealand in the Pacific Championships last October while Ramien has missed four games with a knee injury. Siosifa Talakai shifts from centre to the interchange and Mawene Hiroti has been named in No.19. Jayden Berrell comes in at hooker for Blayke Brailey, whose run of 139 consecutive games comes to and end due to concussion. Cam McInnes (ankle) is replaced at lock by Jesse Colquhoun.

    NRL Team List | Round 11

    nib Newcastle Knights Head Coach Justin Holbrook has named his 22-man squad for Sunday afternoon's Magic Round clash against the Gold Coast Titans at Suncorp Stadium.

    The side is again unchanged from the one which defeated the Dragons last weekend.

    Dylan Lucas has been named to take the field in what will be his 50th NRL appearance, with all 50 coming in the red and blue jumper.

    St George Illawarra Dragons have been rocked on the eve of their clash against the Knights with reports that their captain will jump ship next season.

    Reports on Friday surfaced that Damien Cook would leave the club at the end of 2026 to play in the English Super League.

    Cook, who was in negotiations with the Dragons previously, was forced to sit and wait on his future after St George Illawarra put an internal contract freeze across their playing group following a dismal start to the campaign, which saw Shane Flanagan sacked following the Red V's seventh straight loss to start the season.

    Dean Young Backs 5-Minute Sin Bins for St. George Illawarra Dragons

    Dean Young has asked the NRL to cut sin-bins from 10 minutes to five as st. george illawarra dragons prepare to face Newcastle in Wollongong on Saturday. The Dragons coach said the current penalty is having too much influence on scorelines and that the game is still being decided by who copes best with the bin.

    Young called the rule confusing and said he is still trying to understand why some players are sent off while others are not. He said the issue is not just the sanction itself, but the way it swings momentum inside a match.

    “There are big momentum swings throughout the game. The biggest thing to overcome is the sin bins, and I'm still trying to get my head around why some are being put in the bin, and some aren't,” Young said on Friday ahead of the Newcastle Knights clash.

    Former NRL utility keen on a return to Australia

    At the beginning of 2025 Tyson Smoothy announced he would be joining Wakefield Trinity on a three-year deal, considered a massive steal by the Super League outfit.

    Following the announcement, Smoothy went on to have a breakout season in which he won a premiership with the Brisbane Broncos.

    The form has continued at Wakefield too, but the 26-year-old reportedly has no desire to see out the remainder of his contract.

    According to Love Rugby League, Smoothy's family is keen to return to Australia, and the hooker has approached the club about an early release.

    It has also been reported Wakefield have no desire to let him go mid-season, but are not against severing ties at the season's end.

    Wakefield Trinity set for Tyson Smoothy blow as star set for exit

    Wakefield Trinity star Tyson Smoothy could be set to leave the club by the end of the season after expressing a desire to return to Australia, Love Rugby League can reveal.

    Smoothy joined Trinity at the start of this season on a three-year contract as one of the biggest signings in Wakefield’s history.

    However, while he has thrived in a Trinity shirt, it is understood Smoothy’s family are keen on a return to Australia and the hooker has approached the club about a possible return.

    Wakefield sources have insisted that no release will be granted for Smoothy mid-season, and the player is fully committed to Wakefield for the remainder of this season at least.

    Dolphins: No changes to the starting 13 but two big inclusions on the bench for Kristian Woolf with Kodi Nikorima and Jeremy Marshall-King named in jumper No.18 and No.19 respectively. Nikorima missed the last two weeks due to suspension, with Woolf opting to stick solid with the halves pairing of Brad Schneider and Isaiya Katoa. Marshall-King is eyeing his first game of the season after injuring his knee in a freak accident at home in January. Kurt Donoghoe drops out of the squad after playing 26 minutes off the bench last week.

    NRL Round 10 Team News: Back to Brisbane

    The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs side to face the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium has been named. 

    The Bulldogs will head up to face the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium for the first time in the fourth clash against the competition's newest side. 

    Five-eighth Matt Burton is set to play his 100th NRL match for the Bulldogs since joining the Club in 2022. Meanwhile, youngster Alekolasimi Jones has been named in the no.14 jersey after impressing in his NRL debut last week. 

    Head Coach Cameron Ciraldo has made a number of changes to the squad, with Sean O'Sullivan returning to the interchange bench, and Gordon Chan Kum Tong coming into the wider squad. Meanwhile, Jake Turpin will be out for an extended period after suffering a bicep injury.
