Cricketer hospitalised after scary incident as match abandoned due to ‘misbehaving’ pitch

A first-class fixture at North Sound’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in the Caribbean has been abandoned due to a dangerous pitch, with a player hospitalised after being struck on the helmet during the final delivery of the match.

The four-day West Indies Championship contest between Trinidad & Tobago and Leeward Islands was declared a draw after the umpires decided to abandon the match on Tuesday morning.

Gold and silver sell-off accelerates as inflation fears grip global markets

Gold and silver joined a broad sell-off on Thursday, with the metals shedding around 5% and 10%, respectively, as fears about the Iran war and inflation gripped global markets.

Spot gold slid nearly 5% to below $4,600 an ounce. Front-month gold futures were down almost 6% at about $4,600.

Spot silver slid more than 6% to $70.22 an ounce, while silver futures lost more than 9% to settle at $70.29.

Mining stocks and exchange-traded funds linked to gold and silver also fell in premarket trading. The ProShares Ultra Silver ETF shed 20% ahead of Thursday's opening bell, while the iShares Silver Trust ETF — which was at the center of a so-called meme trade earlier this year — was down almost 10%. Aberdeen's Physical Silver Shares ETF was down 9.9%.

Iran war: Why gold prices are not soaring

Gold is typically seen as a safe haven, especially in times of war and other crises. Notwithstanding the ongoing war in Iran, the price is steady. What's driving the stability?

A well-known stock market proverb says: "Buy when the cannons are firing." In other words, in times of war and uncertainty, people should invest.

Those looking to protect their wealth and assets often turn to gold — even though gold is rarely cheap in turbulent times. In times of crises, such as a pandemic or a war, demand for gold typically rises. This stronger demand tends to push prices higher, as it did in the first weeks of this year.

Layoffs to affect 10% of workforce amid Australian company’s restructuring plan to push into artificial intelligence and enterprise sales

Australian software giant Atlassian has announced it is laying off about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 1,600 positions, as part of a restructuring plan to push into artificial intelligence and enterprise sales.

Shares of the company rose more than 4% in extended trading on the Nasdaq.

The company’s co-founder, Mike Cannon-Brookes, told employees the move was “the right decision for Atlassian” in a note circulated late Wednesday, US time.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s easy,” he said. “Far from it. I know this has a huge impact on each of you, and it weighs heavily on me and Atlassian today.”

Software giant Atlassian is cutting 10 per cent of its global workforce, or about 1600 employees, as the company led by billionaire chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes is upended by AI turbulence.

Cannon-Brookes told staff on Thursday morning that AI was changing “the mix of skills we need” and “the number of roles required in certain areas” in the largest restructure in the company’s 23-year history.

A spokeswoman said about 30 per cent of the impacted employees are based in Australia, meaning about 500 local jobs will be axed. Atlassian employs about 16,000 workers globally with about 3500 of those in Australia.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the defending champions, will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on the opening night of IPL 2026.

The season-opening game will be played on March 28 at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which was cleared by the Karnataka government recently to host IPL matches after uncertainty following the tragic loss of 11 lives in a stampede last June during RCB's IPL victory celebrations.

The matches at the Chinnaswamy, however, remain subject to clearance from an expert committee constituted by the Karnataka state government. "The committee will conduct a meeting and inspection of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026, during which a full-scale mock demonstration of match-day arrangements will be carried out to assess the stadium's preparedness for hosting IPL matches," an IPL release has said.

Even a record-breaking launch can’t seem to save developers from layoffs. According to a report from IGN, the various teams behind Battlefield 6 have been hit with an unspecified number of layoffs; that includes staff at EA studios Criterion, Dice, Ripple Effect, and Motive, all of which contributed to the game.

EA lays off staff across Battlefield-related studios in "alignment" move as game bleeds players — billions in revenue and record sales figures not enough to save staff from the axe

It seems that barely a day goes by without news about mass layoffs in AI or gaming companies, and today the talk is about Electronic Arts. The Battlefield series publisher is axing an undetermined number of jobs across studios related to the franchise. The cuts affect key developer Dice as well as Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive.

IGN first reported the story, citing an EA spokesperson's noncommittal statement that "[EA] made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community." Some would say that's a hard pill for the affected staff to swallow, considering the latest Battlefield 6 had sold an estimated 20 million copies by late 2025.
