The 2026 Winter Olympics are officially underway in Italy, and while snow-dusted peaks and ice rinks aren’t the most obvious proving grounds for Australian athletes, a new generation is showing that Aussie grit travels well — even on ice.

This year’s Games open with momentum to spare, buoyed by an exciting opening ceremony that saw performers including Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli take to the stage.

Carey delivered a swoon-worthy medley of the Italian classic “Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)” and her own “Nothing Is Impossible,” dressed in custom Roberto Cavalli for the iconic Italian spectacle.

Controversial French team winning gold is awful for figure skating, abuse survivors | Opinion

MILAN ― What an awful message the sport of figure skating just sent to sexual abuse survivors and victims, and parents who want their children to participate in a safe sport.

Figure skating just put Olympic gold medals around the necks of a French ice dance team that exists only because of the investigation and subsequent suspension of an alleged sexual abuser, Nikolaj Sorensen, who has been consistently and publicly supported by that team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron.

Fournier Beaudry, 33, who is Sorensen’s girlfriend, joined forces with Cizeron a year ago after Sorensen was banned for a minimum of six years for allegedly sexually assaulting a U.S. skater in 2012. His suspension was overturned last year but is being reviewed, meaning the ban could be put back into place. He was in the Olympic arena Wednesday night, and when the French team spotted him in the crowd, they joyously waved from the podium, and he whistled back.

LIVIGNO, Italy — Sure, Chloe Kim was a touch nervous. But who were we kidding?

"I might be better at snowboarding than I am at walking," she said.

That was apparent Wednesday when Kim, four weeks removed from a schedule-scrambling shoulder injury, soared through a no-fuss, no-drama qualifying round, finishing first to easily earn a spot in the final, where she will attempt to become the first snowboarder to win three straight Olympic gold medals.

Two dozen riders got two turns down the Olympic halfpipe on a partly cloudy day in Livigno, with their best score counting and 12 advancing to Thursday night's final.

Winter Olympics 2026: Kirsty Muir finishes fourth in freestyle ski slopestyle

Freestyle skier Kirsty Muir missed out on Great Britain's first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics by the narrowest of margins with a fourth-place finish in the women's slopestyle.

Muir scored 76.05 points with a brilliant third run, finishing only 0.41 behind Canadian bronze medallist Megan Oldham at Livigno Snow Park.

Having fallen on the penultimate jump of her opening run, Muir – who had qualified third – sat in sixth after her second.

But despite a vastly improved performance on her final attempt, a crestfallen Muir was left wanting more on the biggest stage.

"I put it out there on every run," the 21-year-old told BBC Sport.

Five golds to be won on Saturday – follow our daily guide

There's the official confirmation we needed, Great Britain's Kirsty Muir is through to Monday's final with a score of 64.98. She's still in third.

Second-placed Eileen Gu is also through, despite that torrid first run.

Winter Olympics 2026: first gold medal up for grabs in men’s downhill – live

Women’s Freeski Slopestyle qualifying: While qualifying continues, Team GB’s Kirsty Muir has booked her place among the 12 women who will contest Monday’s final with a score of 64.98, the third best of the day so far. China’s Eileen Gu will also be in the final despite a disastrous first run this morning that earned her a score of 1.26.

Men’s Downhill: The top three are separated by 0.5 of a second as one competitor after another hurtles down what is ostensibly a horizontal sheet of ice at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. At one point, Italy’s Giovanni Franzoni took off and flew over 50 metres through the Italian morning sky before his skis touched the ground again. It is phenomenal, truly terrifying sport.

Winter Olympics 2030: When is the next games? Who will host?

The next Winter Olympics and Paralympics will take place in the French Alps region in 2030.

The Games are scheduled to take place from 1-17 February, with the Paralympics starting a month later between 1-17 March.

The French Alps bid was put forward as the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) preferred location and was approved in July 2024.

France has previously hosted the Winter Games three times, including the inaugural games in 1924, as well as 1968 and 1992.

It comes off the back of France's success in hosting the 2024 summer Olympic Games in Paris, where the hosts won a national record 64 medals.

Welcome to new cold war as world descends on Italy amid global political chaos | Winter Olympics 2026

Organisers are hoping for a celebration of winter sport at Milano Cortina 2026 but tensions will not be far from the surface

A short stroll from where the grandees of the International Olympic Committee are staying in Milan sits the Museum of Illusions – a place devoted to magic and misdirection. Mirrors distort. Perspectives shift. And nothing is quite what it seems. It is an apposite metaphor for these Winter Olympics, which officially open in Italy on Friday.

Over the following 16 days, the world will be enraptured by the dazzle and spin of these Games: downhill skiers bombing down mountains at 95mph, snowboarders twirling like gyroscopes, the balletic grace of the world’s best skaters. But in Milano Cortina a fresh cold war is also brewing amid global political chaos.

Get Ready for This Year’s Undemocratic, Debt-Ridden, and Mobster-Infused Winter Olympics

ICE thugs in the streets, Mafia meddling, and billions in waste—seems like the Games are off to a great start.

People take part in a demonstration against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games in Milan, Italy, on January 31, 2026.

On February 6, the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics kick off with an opening ceremony featuring the likes of Mariah Carey and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. With lagging ticket sales among locals and protests clogging the streets of Milan to decry the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as security for JD Vance’s delegation, these Olympics already bear the stink of political discontent. When combined with the Beijing 2022 Winter Games and the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, Milano Cortina arrives during the Olympics’ most politically charged inflection point since the back-to-back boycotts of the early 1980s.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle fastest in Olympics downhill training

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

BORMIO, Italy — American skier Ryan Cochran-Siegle was fastest in the opening downhill training session of the Milan Cortina Games on Wednesday but another racer had to be airlifted off the fearsome Stelvio slope.

Cochran-Siegle was 0.16 seconds faster than the young Italian Giovanni Franzoni, who is having a fantastic season, and 0.40 ahead of Swiss standout Marco Odermatt.

Times and placings, however, are all but irrelevant in downhill training. Especially as Wednesday's session was the first of three ahead of Saturday's race.

But the way Cochran-Siegle tackled what is probably one of the toughest Olympic slopes of the past 30 years will serve as a confidence boost.

Fredrik Møller in extreme doubt for remainder of Olympics after suffering dislocated shoulder in high-speed crash

Norwegian star skier Fredrik Møller is in extreme doubt for the remainder of the Winter Olympics after suffering a terrifying high-speed crash in a training run.

Møller crashed in the first downhill training run on the notorious Stelvio slope in Bormio, which is considered one of the most difficult courses in the world.

The 25-year-old, who was travelling well over 120km/h, lost his footing on a bend and went down hard.

He was immediately attended to by medical staff before being airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

He was considered one of the contenders for gold after winning the most recent World Cup super-G event on the same course in 2024.
