Hewitt lashes tennis officials after World No.1s cop bizarre 'ban' at Aus Open

Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt has taken aim at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for seemingly blocking players from wearing 'Whoop' devices at the Australian Open. Tennis fans and commentators are once again questioning the rules at the Australian Open after World No.1 players Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz were asked to remove the item that is ambiguously banned on Sunday.

Alcaraz beat 19th seed Tommy Paul 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 7-5, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Aussie Alex de Minaur. De Minaur later dispatched 10th seed Alexander Bublik 6-4 6-1 6-1 in just an hour and 32 minutes.

On Sunday afternoon, Alcaraz was troubled by Paul as the Spanish star was pushed all the way by his American opponent. And Alcaraz was troubled before the match even started when he was asked to remove his 'Whoop' fitness band.

Another two young Americans – both from California – enjoyed milestone wins on the eighth day of main draw action at Australian Open 2026 in Melbourne, with Iva Jovic and Learner Tien both moving into the quarterfinals at a major for the first time.

Eighteen-year-old Jovic astonishingly dropped just a single game to beat the experienced Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-0 6-1 in her first-ever Grand Slam fourth round match, before Tien later thrashed three-time Melbourne Park finalist Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-0 6-3.

Australian Open 2026: Iva Jovic & Victoria Mboko – doubles partners leading teen disruptors

Iva Jovic (left) and Victoria Mboko will meet in the quarter-finals if they win their fourth-round ties

If the men's draw at the Australian Open has belonged to the veterans, the women's has been a celebration of youth – with teenagers Victoria Mboko and Iva Jovic reaching the second week of a major for the first time in their fledgling careers.

After dropping just 12 games across her previous two matches, 17th seed Mboko came through a tight three-set encounter with Danish 14th seed Clara Tauson. The 19-year-old's reward is a date with world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the last 16.

Teenagers stun at Aus Open as World No.1 pushed and divisive star bundled out

Teenagers Iva Jovic and Victoria Mboko are the talk of the tennis world after Mboko produced an 'incredible' fight against Aryna Sabalenka and Jovic sent Yulia Putintseva packing from the Australian Open on Sunday. The 18-year-old Jovic destroyed Putintseva with a 6-0 6-1 thrashing, sending the divisive star home in just 53 minutes.

It came after Putintseva divided opinion with her response to what she described as 'disrespectful' treatment from fans in her previous win over Zeynep Sönmez. The Kazakh player danced in front of vocal Turkish fans – who then booed her relentlessly during an on-court interview – after Putintseva said they'd been trying to put her off throughout the match.

Australian Open Men’s Day 3 Predictions Including Karen Khachanov vs Alex Michelsen

The first round of the Australian Open wraps up on Day 3 as some of the top players in the world make their 2026 Melbourne debuts. No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov squares off against young American Alex Michelsen. Elsewhere around the grounds, Day 3 welcomes Jannik Sinner vs Hugo Gaston, Ben Shelton vs Ugo Humbert, Lorenzo Musetti vs Raphael Collignon, and Taylor Fritz vs Valentin Royer. Offering their insights and predictions are Zain Mustafa, Ilemona Onekutu, and Shane Black. But who will advance?

    Zain
The last time in his career down under, Gael Monfils showed in 2025 that he is willing to save his best tennis for the Majors, despite an injury risk looming in every match he enters. Dane Sweeny has been playing decent tennis recently, but this may be one of the rare cases where the crowd supports an icon over their home player, and why not extend Monfils’ stay in Melbourne for one more match.
    Prediction: Monfils in 5

Australian Open tennis preview and pick: Khachanov vs. Darderi

Karen Khachanov and Luciano Darderi will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they clash in round three of the Australian Open on Saturday.Darderi is playing great right now, but he is the essence of a clay-court specialist. All four of the Argentine’s titles have come on the red stuff and prior to this fortnight he had won only two total matches at the two hard-court Grand Slams throughout his career.Khachanov, on the other hand, is a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist (including at the Aussie Open) and has reached four other major quarterfinals. The Russian has looked good so far in Melbourne, ousting tough Americans Alex Michelsen and Nishesh Basavareddy.Pick: Khachanov in 4 #ays-poll-id-6973f7206af68.box-apm { width: 600px; margin: 0 auto !important; Australian Open Day 5 Women’s Predictions Including Naomi Osaka vs Sorana Cirstea

The second round wraps up on Day 5 of the Australian Open. We have 16 women’s singles matches on deck to decide who reaches Round 3. As always, our writers at LastWordOnTennis share their thoughts on the matches. We split the 16 matches between four articles. In addition to this article, the others feature Iga Swiatek vs Marie Bouzkova, Amanda Anisimova vs Katerina Siniakova, and Madison Keys vs Ashlyn Krueger. Predicting these matches are Nurein Ahmed, Zain Mustafa, and Jordan Reynolds. Who do you think will advance to Round 3?

    Nurein:
Uchijima beat an in-form Solana Sierra quite convincingly and that result might just give Mertens some thinking to do. That said, the Belgian remains resolute and gritty on this surface and any hesitation to finish points by Uchijima will be punished.
    Prediction: Mertens in 2

Naomi Osaka vs. Sorana Cirstea Prediction, Odds and Best Bets (Australian Open 2026, Round of 64, January 22)

Over a decade after their first meeting on the WTA Tour, Naomi Osaka and Sorana Cirstea will square off in the Australian Open 2026 Round of 64. The Japanese starlet walked onto Rod Laver Arena with a stunning look in her opener, and will be looking to prolong her journey at one of her most successful tournaments. But with Cirstea being a two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist and former World No. 21, this is not a comfortable match-up by any stretch of imagination.

Naomi Osaka knows how to make an entrance! 🤩 pic.twitter.com/lxQrNz1oRq

Osaka beat a resilient Antonia Ruzic 6-3 3-6 6-4 in Round-1. She is a former World No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion. Having won this tournament in 2019 and 2021, Osaka has a chance of springing some surprises this week. The 28-year-old entered with a 1-1 record at the United Cup. For someone like Cirstea to overcome the 16th seed, the Romanian will need to punch above her World No. 41 ranking. However, she reached the pre-quarters in Brisbane and produced a scintillating comeback vs Eva Lys here in Melbourne.
