Nuggets sit several players vs. Spurs; Jokic questionable

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

The Denver Nuggets ruled out the majority of their usual rotation for the second straight game ahead of Sunday's regular-season finale against the San Antonio Spurs.

One notable exception is three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, who is listed as questionable for the game. Jokic needs to play at least 15 minutes Sunday to be eligible for postseason awards.

The Nuggets' decision to prioritize health and rest heading into the postseason could have several downstream effects on the standings. Denver enters the games as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference at 53-28 but could swap places with the No. 4-seeded Los Angeles Lakers (52-29) with an L.A. win over Utah on Sunday and a Nuggets loss. The Lakers hold the tiebreaker over the Nuggets thanks to some late-game heroics in an overtime win last month.

Minnesota or Houston? Why the Denver Nuggets are resting starters in pivotal finale

It is truly amazing how many fans and analysts around the NBA believe they know why the Denver Nuggets are resting everyone in the season finale against the San Antonio Spurs.

With the Nuggets currently positioned to be the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs if they win today, the Nuggets are effectively punting the game. The following players are listed as out heading into the matchup:

That’s seven of the Nuggets’ projected top 11 rotation players heading into the playoffs. The only four that aren’t listed are Nikola Jokic, Bruce Brown (who will attempt to play all 82 games), Jonas Valanciunas, and Julian Strawther.

NBA Playoff betting picks: Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets West Finals odds worth a gamble

The final day of the NBA regular season brings suspense as multiple playoff scenarios unfold.

In the West, two teams have surpassed 60 wins, the reigning champion Thunder and the rising Spurs, who are leading the pack.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder have moved past any concerns about a championship hangover, once again leading a highly competitive conference.

They are currently listed at +135 to repeat as champions on FanDuel Sportsbook, with SGA also close to joining Nikola Jokic as one of the few players to earn back-to-back MVP awards.

Many expect a showdown between Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs and the Thunder in the playoffs. San Antonio has dominated Oklahoma City this season, winning four of their five matchups.

Three uncapped players called up for final home Socceroos friendlies before World Cup

Tony Popovic makes no promises to convince young players to commit

Tony Popovic said he did all he could to convince Adrian Segečić to play for the Socceroos and repeated the maxim that he won’t be “selling the shirt”, after naming a 26-player squad for upcoming friendlies, including one player who has never been to Australia.

Hibernian striker Ante Šuto, who was born and raised in Croatia, joins two other uncapped players for this month’s matches against Cameroon and Curaçao – young defender Lucas Herrington, who plays with Colorado Rapids, and forward Deni Jurić, who departed Socceroos camp last November due to injury.

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has launched a passionate defence of his management of Adrian Segecic, vowing he will never make promises to young players about game time or bow to pressure to stop them defecting to another country.

Popovic unveiled a 26-player squad on Thursday for Australia’s upcoming friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao – their last fixtures on home soil before the World Cup in June – but the biggest talking point was a player who wasn’t in it, and now probably never will be.

Segecic, a former Sydney FC academy product who plays for Portsmouth in the English Championship, had his request to switch his international allegiance from Australia to Croatia approved over the weekend by FIFA.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Cameron Young was a runner-up seven times on the PGA Tour before he finally picked up his first victory at the Wyndham Championship in August 2025.

In the final round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday, Young looked determined to make sure he didn't finish second again.

Trailing England's Matt Fitzpatrick by one stroke with two holes to play, Young tied his playing partner with a birdie on the iconic 17th hole and then beat him with a par on the 18th, where Fitzpatrick's drive into the trees on the right led to a bogey 5.

Cameron Young holds off Matt Fitzpatrick on final hole to win Players Championship

The PGA Tour might have lost out in the court of public opinion over whether the Players Championship could be a major. However, the level of drama as shadows lengthened on this Sawgrass Sunday set the tournament aside from most others.

It came down to Cameron Young versus Matt Fitzpatrick. As Fitzpatrick agonisingly missed for par on the 72nd hole, Young had secured the biggest win of his career. He had emerged triumphant from a sporting thriller.

Fitzpatrick will rue the 18th hole. He had taken a double bogey there on Saturday. As his tee shot in round four sprayed right and into pine straw, the Yorkshireman was in trouble again. Young had battered his drive 375 yards down the fairway. It was an advantage the New Yorker was unwilling to waste.

Rory McIlroy says THE PLAYERS Championship will be 'game-time decision' after testing back injury

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Rory McIlroy said he is a “game-time decision” for the first round of THE PLAYERS Championship as he continues to recover from a back injury.

McIlroy arrived on the property for the first time all week on Wednesday afternoon. He hit balls intermittently for about an hour, working his way from a wedge to a 6-iron. After speaking to the media, McIlroy walked TPC Sawgrass’s back nine with a wedge and putter.

“It's better than it was,” McIlroy said of his back, which he injured while warming up for the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard last week.

Rory McIlroy hopes to defend Players Championship despite back injury

‘I’m taking it hour by hour, but it feels better’

Rory McIlroy will make a last‑minute call on Thursday over whether to defend his Players Championship title, with the Northern Irishman still feeling the effects of a weekend back injury. McIlroy will wait until his pre-round range session to determine whether he is fit enough to play.

McIlroy arrived here on Wednesday afternoon, having withdrawn shortly before his third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He hit shots for around an hour before walking the back nine with wedge and putter in hand. McIlroy sustained a muscle problem in the gym on Saturday morning, which left him basically inactive for three days.

Ferran Torres & Pedri reveal brutal Hansi Flick punishment for Barcelona players who report late to team meetings

Barcelona stars Pedri and Ferran Torres have pulled back the curtain on the iron-fisted discipline currently ruling the dressing room at Camp Nou. Under the stewardship of German tactician Hansi Flick, the Catalan giants have undergone a significant cultural shift where every second counts. Flick, known for his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering standards, has reportedly made punctuality an unnegotiable requirement for his squad, viewing any delay as a slight against the entire collective effort.

The duo, who made a joint appearance on the popular Spanish television programme El Hormiguero, explained that Flick’s approach to tardiness has evolved this season. While previous infractions might have resulted in players being axed from the matchday squad, the German boss has shifted his focus toward a more financial deterrent. Flick has previously explained his stance, stating: "[Being late] is a lack of respect, not for me but for his teammates, the institution, and the fans. It’s not that difficult to arrive on time, this can’t happen and it has happened."

WA Lotto players strike it rich with division one wins

We’re already into February but let’s celebrate January, at least from a Lotto perspective, with nine West Aussies sharing more than $20 million in winnings.

Among them was a Mt Pleasant couple who became millionaires after their Saturday ticket, bought from Garden City Lottery Centre in Booragoon, scooped $1.6 million.

Dreaming of a Chanel handbag in the Lotterywest Winners Room, the woman said she was in shock when she checked her ticket.

“I couldn’t believe it when they told me I won division one,” she said.

“It wasn’t until we came to Lotterywest to claim the prize that it started to sink in that we had won $1.6 million.

Powerball jackpots to $50m as Aussies urged to check Lotto tickets for missing $114m

More than $114 million in lotto prizes is still sitting unclaimed as another $50 million Powerball jackpot goes on offer tonight. The Lott is waiting for 14 lucky Aussies from across the country to step forward and claim major prizes.

Recently, a woman in South Australia came forward after waiting eight days to check her $20 million Powerball ticket, spokesperson Anna Hobdell told Yahoo News Australia.

The retiree scored her multi-million-dollar prize on Christmas Day, but was completely oblivious until the silly season wrapped up.

“I had no idea until I checked the ticket just now,” the winner told lottery officials.

“It’s been in my purse the whole time, but I had a lot going on this week, so hadn’t got around to checking it.”

Petty Patriots? Players and Cardi B call out doubters after 5 takeaways in win vs. Texans

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Inside a buzzing New England Patriots locker room, edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson shouted: “Everybody picked them!”

The Patriots weren’t, according to oddsmakers, underdogs at home. But a panel of five ESPN analysts had unanimously predicted a Houston Texans upset. And the Patriots were keeping receipts. So after New England emerged from a wintry mix Sunday with a 28-16 divisional playoff win, the team's X account shared the "SportsCenter" clip of the Texans predictions that didn’t pan out.

Grammy Award-winning rapper Cardi B, who is expecting a child with her boyfriend Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs, shared the clip with a video of her screaming: “What are y’all talking about!!!”

Patriots social media account mocks ESPN crew for unanimously picking Texans

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel talked after Sunday's game about his team's ability to ignore the noise, but it seems Patriots players didn't tune out the national pundits completely.

Ahead of Sunday's divisional round game, the ESPN NFL Live crew of Mina Kimes, Ryan Clark, Hannah Storm, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears all revealed their picks for the Patriots-Texans game simultaneously. All five picked Houston, prompting the hosts to react with shock.

The clip went viral before the game. Once the Patriots sealed a 28-16 win, the social media team fired off a simple post with a screengrab from the segment. The Patriots account posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "oh no," with a grimacing face emoji.
