UPDATED Ballon d’Or Power Rankings: Our top 10 ahead of World Cup Final

We’ve updated our Ballon d’Or power rankings ahead of the World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina. Here’s who should be leading the race according to our calculations…

With the World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina approaching, it’s time to look at who could be in line to win world football’s most coveted individual prize.

Traditionally in a World Cup year, performances on the biggest stage go a long way to determining who will win the Ballon d’Or, although club accolades are of course still very pertinent in the conversation.

LAST WEEK’S RANKINGS: View the top 10 we had before the World Cup semis

Kylian Mbappe ruled out of contention for 2026 Ballon d'Or as World Cup final-bound Lionel Messi puts himself in the mix for ninth Golden Ball

Defeat against Spain has, however, ensured that more international glory will fall agonisingly out of reach. At club level, the 2025-26 campaign delivered

Those issues will work against Mbappe as the grandest of prizes – such as

He has guided the Albiceleste to another World Cup final, netting eight goals of his own, and is looking to successfully defend a title that was secured at Qatar 2022. A ninth Golden Ball could be passed in his direction if another talismanic performance is produced against Spain.

“Even if on a personal level, I thought he had a great season, scored a ridiculous amount of goals and carried the team for most part of the season. So, individually, he's had a fantastic season but, unfortunately, without winning any trophies we know the rules to be a Ballon d'Or. You've got to win, Champions League or World Cup or Euros.

Messi pulls ahead of Yamal in Ballon d’Or race, with all to play for at World Cup

Bookies, prediction markets make Lionel Messi favourite to claim trophy despite 39-year-old playing in a second-tier domestic competition

Lionel Messi may not play in one of the best domestic competitions, but his performance at the World Cup has made him favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

The Argentinian has raced ahead of rivals Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane by reaching the final, with bookies and prediction markets shortening the odds on him claiming a record-extending ninth trophy for the game’s best player.

Spain’s Lamine Yamal could yet upset the 39-year-old’s apple cart though, with the teenager second favourite and in a position to deny Messi back-to-back World Cup titles.

Saints, Power meet with top-10 hopes alive. LIVE from 1.15pm AEST

PORT Adelaide has swung a very late change, withdrawing Mitch Zadow less than 30 minutes before the start of Saturday's clash against St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.

Zadow participated in the warm-up ahead of the crunch clash, before Port made the call for the 22-year-old to sit out.

Jacob Wehr has been brought into the side in Zadow's absence.

The Saints host the Power in the first game on Saturday as the race for a wildcard spot heat up.

St Kilda did what it needed to do to pile more misery on a dispirited Essendon then cruise to the line while still in third gear.

Team Selection: Round 18 v Port Adelaide

St Kilda has finalised its team to face Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

The Saints will go in unchanged from their win over the Bombers in Round 17, as they look to go back-to-back for the first time since Round 8.

Ross Lyon speaks to media ahead of St Kilda's clash with Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium.

Jack Carroll, Alex Dodson and Hugh Boxshall will all be listed as emergencies for the clash.

The game will be played at 1:15pm AEST on Saturday, and will be broadcast live on Fox Footy and Kayo.

Live: Saints host Power as WorkSafe Victoria launches investigation into AFL

Port Adelaide coach Josh Carr has said the club is prepared for captain Zak Butters to either stay or leave at the end of the season.

The Power is trying to come from behind in the first match on AFL Saturday against St Kilda at Docklands Stadium.

Later on Saturday, GWS hosts Geelong at Sydney Showgrounds, with the Cats needing a win to maintain striking distance of the automatic finals places and the Giants looking to follow up on their victory over Fremantle.

In Saturday's night matches, 10th-placed Carlton hosts the high-flying Hawks at the MCG, while the Suns travel to Adelaide to face the Crows, needing to end a five-game losing streak if they want a chance to make it to the wild card round.

From Cape Verde to drinks breaks: The World Cup group stage's surprises and stinkers

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The 2026 World Cup's group stage has come to an end, and it didn't disappoint, producing stunning moments, record-breaking feats and heartbreaking exits.

The group stage started with a wild match between Mexico and South Africa — which saw three red cards — and ended with a dramatic draw between Austria and Algeria, ending Iran's geopolitically tinged presence in the partly-US-hosted tournament.

In between, the group stage delivered many memorable moments, from unexpected qualifications to superstars coming through with the goods. It also saw a new record set for the most goals scored in any World Cup group stage.

World Cup 2026 power rankings: France still kings but who has climbed 26 places?

From Algeria to Uzbekistan, we assess the standing of the 48 nations after the group stage of the tournament

It took a little over an hour for Kylian Mbappé to find his groove. Irked by a poor refereeing decision, he scored twice in France’s opener against Senegal. Ably supported by a stunning cast, Mbappé will already have his sights on winning the competition. Michael Olise has shown his class throughout, while Ousmane Dembélé dazzled with a hat-trick against Norway. We’ll see if anyone can stop Didier Deschamps’ team.

Lionel Messi turned 39 this week but there is little indication he is slowing down. A missed penalty against Austria was the only blemish on his Group J record and, to be fair, he scored twice in that match, adding to his hat-trick against Algeria as he became the World Cup’s record goalscorer. Argentina’s success will hinge on their captain, which may explain why he was allowed a breather in the final group match – although he still came off the bench to score his sixth goal in the group stage.

Power star happy to laugh off speculation as decision on future nears

As Zak Butters considers his future, the Power star would prefer the AFL didn't follow the NRL's path around player movement

ZAK BUTTERS says the AFL isn't ready for NRL-style honesty about player movement as he weighs offers to become his code's richest footballer.

Port Adelaide's acting captain says he's laughing off some of the reported offers while remaining steadfast in not deciding his future until season's end.

Butters believes the AFL landscape isn't yet equipped for NRL scenarios where some players announce in-season their decision to switch clubs.

"I just don't think it's the right way to go about it," Butters told reporters on Tuesday.

Taylor Walker on playing in Showdowns, the impact of Tony Modra and more.

Veteran Adelaide forward Taylor Walker spoke to the media alongside Port Adelaide Vice Captain Zak Butters ahead of Showdown 60 this Saturday night.

Here is what the Club’s all-time leading goalkicker had to say ahead of the blockbuster clash.

Walker will suit up for his 27th Showdown this Saturday night, with the 36-year-old certainly not taking the opportunity to feature in the marquee rivalry for granted.

“I don't know (if this will be my last Showdown), I'll treat it like it will be,” Walker said.

“I'm just very grateful to be able to not only just play this game for so long, but be able to play in these games. I'll never ever take it for granted what the Showdowns means, and how it brings this state to life.

‘Not mature enough’: Debate over ‘chaotic’ AFL change idea after cryptic Butters remark

Zak Butters says the footy industry isn’t ready for premature player movement decisions, such is the case in rugby league.

And on Tuesday night, debate reigned as AFL 360 hosts Gerard Whateley and Garry Lyon discussed the ramifications of a world where players were able to reveal their moves mid-season.

The ATP Halle opening round on June 16 continues with several interesting grass-court battles, featuring players seeking early momentum before Wimbledon. Tallon Griekspoor looks to bounce back after an early exit in ’s-Hertogenbosch. At the same time, Sho Shimabukuro arrives with confidence after reaching the Stuttgart quarterfinals and breaking into the top 100 for the first time. Daniil Medvedev also returns to Halle after another strong week on grass and faces clay specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a matchup that heavily favours the Russian’s flat baseline style on faster courts. Meanwhile, Fabian Marozsan and Miomir Kecmanovic meet again in Halle after splitting their previous meetings, with both players still trying to find consistency on grass.

Instead of a soft power coup, the World Cup could be an ‘own goal’ for Donald Trump

For football fans, the FIFA World Cup is so much more than sport. Every four years, it presents a unifying moment – bringing people together across the divides of language, culture and geography in a shared passion for the game.

For hosting nations, the World Cup is often a soft power supercharger. Watched by billions of people around the globe, it is a prime opportunity to showcase one’s country, culture and values.

This is all part of what’s known as sport diplomacy, or in this case “football diplomacy”. Beyond the trophies, governments invest in football to “win” off the pitch, too, in terms of fostering better relations, courting investment and earning global prestige.

It’s a Trumpian World Cup for racism and cynicism – why don’t those who condemned Qatar 2022 say so?

We must highlight the awful stance of the White House towards so many competing nations, but also the hypocrisy of leaders who acquiesce

Omar Artan was to be the first Somali to referee at the World Cup finals. A Fifa-certified referee since 2018, Artan officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023 and was named the 2025 Confederation of African Football men’s referee of the year. Last weekend, as we know, Artan was denied entry to the United States at Miami international airport.

The US has not officially given a reason for Artan’s ban, but we know that Somalia is one of the countries on Donald Trump’s travel ban list. After the news reverberated around the world, an administration source, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed the move came about because Artan had possible links to possible terrorists. But that claim, in the face of a furore, merits widespread scepticism. There is a word for this: racism.

The US border runs straight through the World Cup

The 2026 World Cup promised continental unity. Instead, it has exposed the violence and hypocrisy of Fortress America.

On June 11, the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicked off in Mexico, which, along with the United States and Canada, is cohosting this year’s tournament in an ostensible display of continental unity.

From the get-go, the whole shared hosting concept was rather ludicrous, given that one of the hosts is particularly bad at playing with others. For starters, the US maintains a system of overzealous visa restrictions and “travel bans” for citizens of an array of nations, which renders an already socioeconomically exclusive event even more so and shatters the illusion of international camaraderie that the World Cup is supposed to embody.

Power price drops for most customers as batteries flatten peak

Batteries have taken over the National Energy Market's most valuable hours, setting the price more often than any other technology. (Synergy)

Surging levels of renewable energy and better reliability from coal-fired generators are set to give consumers a break, with benchmark power prices to fall up to 10 per cent for consumers and more for small businesses.

In what will be welcome news for power users weary from years of big tariff hikes, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has decided to cut the default market offer (DMO) in several states.

The offer acts as a safety net by setting the maximum, or ceiling, price retailers can charge affected customers.

Power bills set to fall despite Iran uncertainty

Homes and businesses will start feeling immediate relief from rising electricity bills within weeks after regulators locked in price cuts for consumers across the eastern seaboard.

The Australian Energy Regulator on Tuesday said it would reduce the maximum rates that retailers can charge customers on standard electricity plans, known as default market offers, from July 1.

The default price cuts – up to 5 per cent ($137) in parts of NSW and 7 per cent ($155) in south-east Queensland – mark the steepest cuts since 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed up the cost of energy and triggered double-digit power bill rises. Prices will rise 1.5 per cent in South Australia.
