    Elizabeth Smart: I am very happy with it. Absolutely — when I first got home, I didn’t hear of anyone else who’d been kidnapped, didn’t know of anyone else who’d been held captive. I didn’t feel like rape, sexual violence and abuse were common conversation. So, I ended up feeling very isolated, very alone.

    Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart review – her frankness about her ordeal is truly inspiring

    Taken from her bedroom at the age of 14 and sexually abused for nine months, Smart, now a child safety activist, rails powerfully against shame in this true-crime documentary

    New year, new true-crime documentary from Netflix. Age cannot wither the genre made famous by the streamer all the way back in 2015 with Making a Murderer, which explored the wrongful conviction of Steven Avery for sexual assault and attempted murder who spent 18 years in prison for that and who was later tried and convicted of another murder. That documentary was a decade in the making. Things move more quickly now, and the preferred content is more palatable to a mass audience – tales of victims’ survival and the very rightful conviction of perpetrators meet the voyeuristic appetite and proxy lust for vengeance without requiring too much painful thinking abut the inadequacies of a country’s legal system, say, or the corruption of its law enforcement.

    Chattogram Royals sealed their berth in the BPL final, beating Rajshahi Warriors by six wickets in a close Qualifier 1 in Dhaka. The losing side Rajshahi will now meet Sylhet Titans in Qualifier 2 on Wednesday.

    Chattogram captain Mahedi Hasan took his side home with a six in the last over, a stunning straight drive that got the side close. He then flicked Ripon Mondol for two down to fine leg, as Chattogram, currently without an owner, reached the BPL final. Chattogram's owner had quit the day before the BPL began, with the BCB taking over. Habibul Bashar was made team director, and Mizanur Rahman was named coach.

    DHAKA, Jan 17, 2026 (BSS) – Tanzim Hasan Sakib's 4-17 was complemented by Mushfiqur Rahim's valiant 46 not out as Rajshahi Warriors eked out a three-wicket victory against Chattogram Royals in a low-scoring Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) game at Sher-e-Bangladesh National Cricket Stadium today.

    The win confirmed Rajshahi's top spot in the points table with 16 points from 10 matches, while Chattogram Royals and Rangpur Riders were left battling for the second position and a place in Qualifier 1. Chattogram have 12 points while Rangpur have 10 from nine matches.

    Tanzim Hasan Sakib's brilliance with the ball helped Rajshahi bundle Chattogram out for just 125 in 19.5 overs but they almost defended the total before Mushfiqur Rahim's valiant effort saw the team home with three balls to spare.

    Residents and holidaymakers were evacuated from Narrabeen Lagoon in Sydney’s northern beaches overnight on Saturday, but were told they could return on Sunday.

    It came as a landslide damaged three homes and injured at least one woman 20km north, at Great Mackerel beach.

    New South Wales State Emergency Service crews responded to 1,403 calls for help in the 24 hours to 5am Sunday, as cars were submerged and homes flooded.

    Maresca hints at wanting older heads at end of chaotic week

    Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insisted that speculation around his future would not distract his squad before facing Newcastle – but that was not how it looked for 45 minutes on Saturday.

    Even before kick-off, Maresca appeared to question Chelsea's focus on buying only youth, suggesting having more experienced players is "invaluable".
