Splatoon Raiders review – Nintendo’s inky shooter fades to grey

Nintendo Switch 2The single-player offshoot of the quirky and colourful multiplayer series is disappointingly run-of-the-mill

Splatoon is among Nintendo’s most ingenious inventions of the last decade: a series of shooting games whose paint-splattered turf war nature means being bad at shooting is just as valuable as – if not more so than – being good. It is also blessed with an abundance of personality, with vibrant characters, a richly imagined world, and a hipness that the competition can only dream of achieving. Unfortunately, Splatoon Raiders makes it difficult to remember all of this.

The first spinoff in the ink-soaked franchise, Splatoon Raiders is advertised as a single player-focused entry in this primarily multiplayer series. While this is true enough – one can play through the entire game solo just fine – Raiders is clearly best enjoyed cooperatively with up to three others. Players start each session on a hideout ship where they can upgrade their equipment and tweak their play style before heading out on bite-sized repeatable missions, and this structure is tailor-made for teaming up with friends or helping out strangers (the game lets you do either), as each person works towards creating their ultimate squid-kid avatar of chaos.

Raiders v Rabbitohs: Strange steps up: Johnston returns

The Raiders are desperate to keep their top-eight chances alive when they host the in-form Rabbitohs on Saturday afternoon.

Ricky Stuart's men returned to form in a big way last week with a dominant 40-16 win over the Bulldogs to remain in touching distance of the eight with eight rounds to play.

The Raiders must keep the momentum rolling on Saturday as they look to mount a late charge to the finals.

Wins against teams above them on the ladder are vital in the cause and this week's clash with South Sydney is another chance to close the gap on their rivals.

The Raiders look to keep their finals hopes alive, hosting the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Canberra stadium.

Melbourne revealed that winger Will Warbrick ruptured his Achilles tendon on Friday night and will undergo surgery early next week, ending his season and his Storm career.

The day's festivities end with the Bulldogs taking on the embattled Wests Tigers at the Sydney Olympic park.

In the NRLW, the Raiders host the Roosters, the Warriors host the Cowboys and the Bulldogs take on the Sharks.

Raiders v Dragons: Sasagi returns; Young sticks solid

The Raiders will be keen to bounce back and halt their losing streak when they host an equally desperate Dragons side on the hunt for their second win.

Back at home in front of their fans after losing their way after a dominant start against the Storm last week, Ricky Stuart's men showed some glimpses of their best – but could not sustain it to lose 42-20.

In what was a snapshot of their season so far, the Dragons put in a huge fight against the Knights last week and were even able to score more tries – but still went down 20-22 after some wayward goal kicking couldn't keep them in front.

Match: Eels vs RaidersDate: Saturday June 13, 2026Kick-Off Time: 7:35pm (AEST)Stadium: CommBank Stadium

It's a huge Saturday night clash for the Raiders as they look to keep their very faint finals chances alive against the Parramatta Eels.

The Eels season has been virtually destroyed by injuries and they find themselves sitting in second-last on the ladder after three straight losses. But, despite all that, they can still potentially spoil the chances of other teams to make the eight, starting with Canberra on Saturday.

NRL LIVE: Eels shut out Raiders in first half as they look to snap losing streak

The Eels took their chance and missed – Ronald Volkman bombing in Josh Addo-Carr’s direction but Xavier Savage leaping well to take the ball in his in-goal, earning a seven-tackle set. A penalty against Volkman follows, and Canberra enter the Eels’ 20-metre zone one last time.

They go right, they might have an overlap here, and Daine Laurie throws a looping cutout pass – past Xavier Savage and over the sideline.

Ricky Stuart is fuming again on the sideline and this is going to be one that got away for Canberra.

It’s a tense final few minutes for Parramatta as they hold onto a slim lead, with Ethan Sanders threatening to kick a 40-20 then putting up a dangerous bomb just in front of the Eels’ goal posts. Josh Addo-Carr is there to defuse both those kicks, and the Eels are hanging in there.

Raiders v Panthers: Strange boosts halves; Henry returns

After recording a gusty win against Titans last week, the Raiders return home to Canberra to take on the ladder-leading Panthers.

Penrith were pushed all the way in their last match by Manly, but were able to overcome a period when they had Jack Cogger in the sin bin where their defence rallied to deny the Sea Eagles any points.

While the Panthers have been runaway leaders for much of the season with only one loss, their recent close matches against Manly and the Dolphins have kept them on their toes and striving for improvement.

The Raiders bounced back from their Round 8 loss with an ambush against the Titans, despite heading to the Gold Coast missing a number of their key personnel, including Hudson Young, Ethan Strange, Noah Martin, Zac Hosking and the continuing absence of Josh Papalii.

Rugby league fans will get a glimpse of the growing anticipation for the Perth Bears' 2027 arrival when Optus Stadium hosts a double-header on Saturday afternoon.

The Rabbitohs will take on the Raiders before Cronulla faces the Roosters in what will be two high quality contests between premiership contenders.

Wayne Bennett's Bunnies sit in the top four after five rounds and are playing with immense confidence while Ricky's Raiders are 1-4 and struggling to find their best form.

The Sharks are coming off an impressive win over the Warriors while the Roosters will be fresh and ready to fire after a bye in Round 5.

NRL Match Preview: Raiders v Rabbitohs

The Toyota Forklift Canberra Raiders are heading West to face the South Sydney Rabbitohs in a double header at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

Off the back of their fourth loss this season, the Raiders are on the hunt for a win to kickstart their slow start to the year.

Xavier Savage is out for eight weeks with an ankle injury suffered in Sunday's game against the Knights. In the meantime, Jed Stuart has big shoes to fill out on the wing as he makes his first appearance of the season on Saturday.

The Rabbitohs are on a roll after dominating the Bulldogs in an electrifying Good Friday match. With Brandon Smith returning and the remainder of the squad untouched, a victory will have the Bunnies searching for that top spot on the ladder.

Reducing friction in ARC Raiders | ARC Raiders Crafting Changes Are ‘Just The Start’ of Pain …

Explore the latest developments concerning Reducing friction in.

    Reducing friction in ARC Raiders

One of the things we care most about as a development team is making sure every moment you spend in ARC Raiders feels purposeful. Your time matters, and we don't want you spending it clicking through menus when you could be out raiding.

That's why we listen closely to what you tell us. And one piece of feedback kept coming up: “I’m spending too much time crafting”.

A lot of you pointed out that gathering missing materials for a craft was more work than it should be. You already knew where to get what you needed, maybe from recycling something you had lying around, or picking it up from Celeste, but jumping through multiple screens to actually do it was a pain point. That friction was getting in the way of the fun.

ARC Raiders Crafting Changes Are ‘Just The Start’ of Pain Point Updates

In the recent Flashpoint update in ARC Raiders, developer Embark Studios added a new map condition, two new ARC constructs, some fresh weapons, quests, and a bunch of quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. One such change was around the in-game crafting system, which has been made more intuitive and streamlined following mass player feedback over the last few months.

To cut down on the time spent crafting, Embark Studios has made the process seamless, auto-filling required components from players’ collections and reducing the amount of navigation needed to make stuff ahead of raids.

This keeps the flow of the game moving quickly, but Embark Studios has advised it’s just the beginning of a much more conscious effort to streamline the game.

Knights v Raiders: Trey's day; Big Papa back on deck

Last year's minor premiers Canberra and wooden spooners the Knights go head-to-head in Round 5 – but the formline has completely switched places.

Under new coach Justin Holbrook, Newcastle have found their steely edge and come into the game with a 3-1 record after defeating the Cowboys, Manly and the Bulldogs so far this season. There loss was in Round 3 to the Warriors.

Against the Bulldogs last week, they overcame the odds – as well as having a player in the sin bin – to defend their way to a 24-16 victory.

The Raiders however have an 1-3 record and are still looking to add another victory after posting a golden point victory over Manly in Round 1.

The Raiders have triumphed in only one of their opening four matches to sit 15th on the ladder.

Ricky Stuart says he is confident the Raiders can turn their season around.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart insists the Raiders are not panicking after making a poor start to the NRL season.

The Raiders, who won the minor premiership last year, are 1-3 (win-loss) through the opening four rounds.

Their attack has struggled to fire in 2026, with the Raiders scoring just 16.8 points per match as compared to their 26.7 average last season.
