Sydney has turned to a familiar face to lead the side during its finals campaign

SYDNEY has turned to veteran defender Dane Rampe to lead its unlikely premiership push with captain Callum Mills sidelined by injury.

A heart-and-soul player who has endured four Grand Final defeats with the Swans, Rampe will captain the club in Friday's preliminary final against Fremantle at the SCG.

His return to the captaincy comes after being re-drafted as a rookie alongside fellow defender Jake Lloyd at the end of last season.

While Lloyd has signed on for a 15th season, neither Rampe nor the Swans have decided on his playing future.

Dane Rampe will stand in for injured captain Callum Mills and lead the Swans into the AFL preliminary final.

Rampe also led the Swans as stand in skipper in 2024 when Mills suffered a hamstring strain.

The Swans take on Fremantle at the SCG in the AFL preliminary final on Friday night, with live blog coverage on ABC Sport website and commentary on ABC Radio.

Dane Rampe didn't think Sydney would still be here, let alone that he'd be tasked with leading the Swans to an unlikely AFL premiership again.

Fairytale story alive as Swans name stand-in captain amid chaotic month

Sydney has named veteran defender Dane Rampe as its stand-in captain for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The 36-year-old will now lead the team out for the side’s preliminary final clash with Fremantle, and potentially lift the premiership cup the following week.

It comes following captain Callum Mills’ torn ACL suffered in week one of the finals, coupled with the suspension of vice-captain Isaac Heeney.

Heeney, along with Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Riley Bice and James Jordon were all banned for the remainder of the season for breaching the club’s standards following round 23.

Coaches’ votes Round 13: Dawson’s big-game impact recognised after Cats thriller

Crows Captain Jordan Dawson’s inspirational performance in Adelaide’s one-point win against Geelong on Thursday night has earned him a perfect 10 in the AFLCA Coaches’ votes.

The 29-year-old was brilliant in the middle, and damaging in attack, finishing the match with 22 disposals, nine tackles, seven clearances, seven marks, three goals and 486 metres gained.

Young gun Dan Curtin was also prolific, and received eight votes following his team-high 26 disposals, five clearances, five marks, one goal and 527 metres gained.

Forward and Vice Captain Alex Neal-Bullen rounded out the vote-getters for Adelaide with one, after amassing 15 disposals, five tackles, three clearances and kicking a goal.

Hobart will be without captain Nathan Ellis for its knockout BBL final against Melbourne Renegades tomorrow night.

The Hurricanes will also be without Test opener Jake Weatherald, who is opting to focus on red-ball cricket.

Hobart Hurricanes skipper Nathan Ellis will miss his side's Big Bash League elimination final against the Melbourne Stars due to injury.

The quick, who has been replaced by Ben McDermott as captain, was not named in Hobart's squad ahead of the knockout third-versus-fourth clash at Bellreive Oval tomorrow.

It is understood Ellis picked up a niggle in his side's last-start loss to the Heat.

But the club confirmed this afternoon Ellis had been ruled out of tomorrow's home final against the Stars with an unspecified niggle. The right-armer has a big month ahead of him as a key part of Australia's pace attack for the T20 World Cup beginning on February 7.

Jake Weatherald won't be on deck for Hobart Hurricanes in their do-or-die BBL Knockout final against Melbourne Stars, with the Test opener opting for a red-ball focus.

Both sides missed a chance to lock up top spot on the ladder in their final regular-season games and will instead meet in the three-against-four clash at Ninja Stadium on Wednesday night.

Defending champions Hurricanes botched an easy run chase against Brisbane Heat that would have secured first, before Stars lost to Perth Scorchers on Saturday.

Several Test stars, including the Hurricanes' Beau Webster, have made themselves available for the BBL since the Ashes finished.
