As the Socceroos shine on the world stage, a different victory is unfolding at home

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

As anti-migrant rhetoric intensifies in Australia, the Socceroos' diverse World Cup squad sends a powerful message to multicultural communities that they belong, migrant advocates say.

The team shocked the world defeating a higher-ranked Türkiye 2-0 on Sunday, with a stunning opening goal scored by 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda, a former refugee and the Socceroos' youngest ever World Cup scorer.

The diversity of Australia's 26-man squad — comprising at least 15 cultural and ethnic backgrounds — has become a focal point of the team's World Cup campaign, with players releasing a video celebrating their migrant roots on the eve of the tournament.

Soccer and immigration are deeply intertwined in Australia. This exhibition explains why

There’s nothing like the World Cup to bring people of different cultures together. Australians of all backgrounds roared with delight when Nestory Irankunda and then Connor Metcalfe scored against Turkey in the Socceroos’ first match of the tournament.

The Socceroos’ second World Cup game on Saturday comes after a week in which One Nation leader Pauline Hanson argued for a stop to multiculturalism, and at a time when members of the Australian team are proudly proclaiming their rich, diverse backgrounds in a social media campaign that speaks directly to those who criticise immigration.

Irankunda was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania; his parents were originally from neighbouring Burundi but had fled due to civil war, eventually settling in Perth when he was three months old. His teammates Awer Mabil, Mohamed Touré and Miloš Degenek also came to Australia as refugees.

Socceroos forward Awer Mabil offered his trademark focus on Wednesday afternoon in Oakland speaking to the Australian media about this week’s clash against the United States. There was one distraction, however, he could not overcome.

The winger lost his concentration when long-time SBS commentator David Basheer – in the US as part of the network’s coverage – asked a question during the press conference. “Sorry, David from SBS, right?” Mabil interjected. “I grew up watching you.”

Cristian Volpato's dramatic last-ditch switch from Italy to Australia has been rewarded with selection for the World Cup before the attacker even makes his Socceroos debut.

Sassuolo playmaker Volpato, who switched allegiances from Italy to Australia just days ago, headlines Australia's 26-man squad along with 25-year-old uncapped striker Tete Yengi, while skipper Mat Ryan and veteran Mathew Leckie head to a fourth World Cup.

Volpato and Yengi join 15 other players in the group who could play their first World Cup games, including 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, while Ryan and Leckie will equal Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan as the only Australian players to go to four men's World Cups.

Socceroos’ World Cup squad revealed as Tony Popovic rolls dice with two uncapped strikers

Joe Gauci, Kye Rowles, Brandon Borrello and Martin Boyle miss out

The Socceroos have named two uncapped attackers in their World Cup squad for this month’s World Cup, as coach Tony Popovic rolls the dice in a bid to find an attacking spark.

Winger Cristian Volpato, the former Italy youth international, has been rushed into the squad after the paperwork allowing his change of allegiance was only completed in the past week. Towering striker Tete Yengi has also won a place after a strong year with Japanese club Machida Zelvia.

Coach Tony Popovic had to cut four players from his training squad to meet the 26-player limit. The unfortunate four are goalkeeper Joe Gauci, defender Kye Rowles and forwards Brandon Borrello and Martin Boyle.

Socceroos Depth Chart: Picking Australia's squad as the World Cup looms

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

We're in the home stretch, where the margins between realising a lifelong dream and having it slip through despairing fingers become razor thin and all the more cruel. Just two and a half months remain until Tony Popovic will settle on his final, 26-player squad for the FIFA World Cup, and, after a long period experimentation following the securing of qualification, the scope for selection is narrowing.

In a sitdown with media last week, the Socceroos boss indicated that while previous camps had seen some call-ups with one eye on tournaments beyond this year's global showpiece — think the surprise call-up of Manchester United youngster James Overy last November — those tapped for friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao this month would be coming in because they were seen as capable of making an impact at the World Cup.

Eight players that could help the Socceroos shed the underdog tag

Tony Popovic has made the promise that “one day Australia will go very far in the World Cup".

“Why not this group?” he added, speaking back in October after the Socceroos qualified for the 2026 tournament that starts on June 12.

Australia’s head coach has until June 1 to submit his final squad to try and fulfil that goal.

He can pick a squad of a maximum of 26 players, including three goalkeepers.

Popovic, who represented his country at the 2006 World Cup, wants Socceroos players to show “toughness”, a “willingness to run and fight”, both traits he hopes will make his side a nightmare to play against.

How breakfast with Eddie Jones helps Tony Popovic plan for Socceroos’ World Cup | Joey Lynch

The Socceroos coach is on a cross-code knowledge quest as he prepares for his first major international tournament. Eddie Jones had a lot to offer

Rugby’s Eddie Jones and football’s Tony Popovic sit down for breakfast in Tokyo. No, it’s not the setup for a joke, maybe something involving Akubras. Instead, it’s a real scene from just last week, amid Popovic’s sweeping, cross-code search for knowledge that will prepare him to lead Socceroos into this year’s World Cup.

Because say what you will about Jones – and many have since he quit the Wallabies post in favour of Japan – but he’s quite good at this whole World Cup thing. He’s led two different nations to the final, advised another during its win, and guided Japan to a stunning upset win over the Springboks in 2015. Thus, if you’re someone like Popovic, who possesses a glittering club coaching career but has never coached at a major international tournament before, let alone at a swelled, 48-team global showpiece event stretched across three countries – two of which can’t exactly be described as bastions of stability – every piece of knowledge you can extract from someone like Jones is golden.
