The Socceroos gave Brazil an enormous scare in Townsville, but are expecting a furious response from the five-time world champions at Brisbane's Lang Park.

Tony Popovic has stuck with the same starting XI as last time out, while Brazil makes seven changes.

The big, bad Harry Souttar has stopped Brazil from equalising for now and concedes a corner. In the aftermath Vini Jnr gets a shot on goal but it’s blocked again and Souttar clips the feet of Danilo Santos inside the box.

There are protests immediately and a VAR check to match. With a minute left of the half, Brazil are awarded a penalty kick. Raphinha will take it. He shoots with his left past Beach into the bottom-right corner and Brazil have equalised.

The Socceroos will play their first internationals since the 2026 FIFA World Cup against five-time world champions Brazil in Queensland this week.

It is the team's first meeting since they played at the MCG in June 2017.

The Socceroos have only ever beaten Brazil once, a 1-0 victory in the 2001 Confederations Cup third-place play-off thanks to Shaun Murphy's 84th-minute strike.

The National Rugby League (NRL) has confirmed the fixtures for Week Three of the NRL Telstra Premiership Finals Series and Week Two of the NRLW Finals matches.

Week Three of the NRL Telstra Premiership will kick off on Friday night (September 25) at Suncorp Stadium with the clash between the Dolphins and the winner of this Saturday night’s Elimination Final between Sydney Roosters and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

The 22-year-old was stopped in a BMW coupe about 1am today, allegedly travelling 109 kilometres an hour on the Anzac Bridge, a 60km/h zone.

The 22-year-old was stopped in a BMW Coupe about 1am today, allegedly travelling 109 kilometres an hour on the Anzac Bridge, a 60km/h zone.

He was subjected to a roadside drug test, which allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine.

Australia’s breakout World Cup star Cristian Volpato allegedly tested positive to cocaine after being pulled over by police in Sydney in the early hours of Friday morning.

The 22-year-old was allegedly twice detected speeding in a BMW Coupé across the Anzac Bridge in a two-hour period – first at 11.05pm Thursday night, then at 1.10am Friday. Police allege that both times he was driving well in excess of the speed limit – clocked between 86-94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone the first time, then at 109 km/h in a 60km/h zone.

A NSW Police statement said the driver was breath tested the first time he was pulled over and returned a negative reading. He was drug tested the second time he was stopped and allegedly recorded a positive result for cocaine.

Socceroos star Cristian Volpato allegedly tests positive to cocaine during roadside test

Socceroos star Cristian Volpato allegedly tested positive to cocaine after being caught driving at more than 50km/h over the speed limit in Sydney overnight.

The 22-year-old – one of Australia’s brightest young football talents – was allegedly driving a BMW at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone across Anzac Bridge, west of Sydney’s CBD, just after 1am on Friday. He allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine after telling officers he had not taken drugs.

Volpato had been stopped two hours earlier on Anzac Bridge and issued an infringement notice after allegedly being caught driving more than 20km/h over the speed limit. He was estimated to be driving the BMW at between 86km/h and 94km/h in a 60km/h zone, police said in a statement. The 22-year-old returned a negative result to a roadside breath test.

Socceroos legend Paul Wade has revealed he’s been diagnosed with probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The 64-year-old, who captained Australia’s national men’s team and played 84 games in the coveted strip, released a statement through the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday.

Former captain of the Socceroos, Paul Wade, has revealed a diagnosis of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy, otherwise known as CTE.

Wade says the neurodegenerative brain disease linked to repeated impacts to the head, which can only be confirmed after death, was first suspected in 2024.

The 64-year-old hopes sharing his experience will raise awareness about concussion and brain health.

Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has announced he has been diagnosed with "probable" chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which has been linked to repeated head knocks and injuries.

In a statement put out by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday, Wade said he was diagnosed in late 2024 with a suspected case of the disease after experiencing neurological symptoms.

For as long as he can remember, former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has had a gift.

When he was 11 years old, newly arrived in Australia from England, he realised he could head a football harder, cleaner and more accurately than the other kids he would play with.

“Goalkeepers always kicked the ball into the air back then. Nobody threw it out,” he said.

“And because I was in midfield, I was probably one of the very few that was willing to head it. Right from the start, I knew I could head a ball – even if it was on the top of my head, where it hurt.

As Australia sealed its progression to the round of 32, there was one player the Socceroos were keen to praise.

Jordy Bos may not have been named player of the match, but another strong performance, in which he was asked to play on the right of defence instead of his preferred left, was lauded by his teammates.

"He's the best player in the world, Jordy Bos," said Nestory Irankunda following the Socceroos nil-all draw with Paraguay.

It was a case of another Socceroos outing, another set of selection surprises from Tony Popovic.

For Friday’s third group game against Paraguay, the head coach made six changes to the starting line-up that was outclassed by the United States last week. And while the pre-match focus was on the re-inclusion of Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, Australia actually discovered their most potent attacking outlet through a forced change.

The absence of right wing-back Jacob Italiano due to injury – while unfortunate – became the gateway to a reshuffle that saw Popovic shift Jordy Bos away from his left wing-back role and into the vacant right wing-back spot, with Aziz Behich slotting in on the left. Popovic also gave Cristian Volpato the nod on the right side of attack, and it was Volpato’s combination with Bos that provided Australia’s best route to goal throughout a dominant first half.

After a week of criticism over his selections for the USA game, the anticipation for the 11 that Tony Popovic would roll out to face Paraguay was palpable.

But not even the most optimistic would have predicted Popovic would make six changes — the most ever by an Australian side at a World Cup — and drop his only true out-and-out striker.

Some would argue this was the attacking line-up he should have picked for the USA game.

Santa Clara: Non-believers in Australia regard soccer’s low scoring rate, in comparison to the other football codes, as a fatal flaw. Presenting the case for the defence was this game: the stalemate of Santa Clara; the biscotto in the Bay Area; the sweetest (and only) scoreless draw in the Socceroos’ World Cup history.

Millions of Australians stopped work and ditched responsibilities on Friday to gather around their nearest screen to watch the Socceroos take on Paraguay. It was never part of the deal that they would be entertained; just that they would feel something.
