    Sydney Swans ban 5 players for rest of AFL season over hotel misconduct and a police investigation

    SYDNEY (AP) — Five Australian rules footballers have been banned for the remainder of the AFL season by the Sydney Swans for breaching player codes of conduct during a stay at a Melbourne hotel that has led to a police investigation into allegations of sexual assault.

    The Swans issued a statement Wednesday saying “Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner will not be considered for selection for the remainder of the 2026 AFL Season,” ruling them out of a regular-season game this weekend and the playoffs series.

    The Swans said the club-imposed sanctions were independent of an investigation by Victoria state police. No charges have been laid, and no player has been identified as being involved in an alleged sexual assault.

    The AFL’s latest regrettable chapter was handled delicately in some areas, while others initially viewed it largely through a sporting lens

    Sydney Swans chief executive Matthew Pavlich, coach Dean Cox and captain Callum Mills spoke to reporters in the 24 hours after police began investigating an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman Hotel on Monday.

    None of the three said much – likely on legal advice – but none felt compelled to even share a thought about the woman or women whose experiences prompted them to go to police.

    For a sport with an unsatisfactory record on rape and sexual violence, this week delivered another regrettable chapter.

    Isaac Quaynor sustained a minor glute injury in Saturday’s game against Hawthorn. He will miss Collingwood’s Round 24 game against Brisbane and is expected to be available for selection for finals.  

    Jeremy Howe has progressed well through his rehabilitation following a fractured arm. His availability for selection will be assessed following main training on Wednesday.

    Ground Up review – Sam Pang stars in ABC’s easily digestible AFL office comedy

    People love a good bureaucracy satire – but while this six-part series is tonally pleasant, it’s not belly-laugh material

    Fans of bureaucracy-themed workplace comedies such as Utopia and The Hollowmen will feel right at home watcing Ground Up, an easily digestible and well-paced series that feasts on the genre’s familiar staples: pointless meetings, labyrinthine approval processes, mountains of red tape and endless rounds of buck-passing. Like the Sydney Olympics-themed The Games – my favourite Australian show in this genre – Gary McCaffrie’s series is about the management of a major upcoming sports project: the launch of an AFL team in Tasmania.

    An ABC comedy about Tasmania’s new AFL team should have worked. Instead, it’s an own goal

    Screenwriters usually have to wait for real-world events to play out before they can apply their blowtorches, so kudos to Gary McCaffrie, the creator and writer of Ground Up, for being first to the punch. This scripted six-part ABC comedy is based on the impending arrival of the AFL’s 19th team, the Tasmania Devils, and the construction of a new stadium in Hobart. Given not a single player has been signed up nor a piece of sod turned, he’s at least a few years ahead of the events he’s satirising. Call it the parody-first approach to history.

    BANGKOK, Thailand — Vanessa Pulgarin of Colombia has made history as the winner of the first edition of MGI All Stars in a competition held here on Saturday evening, May 30.

    Pulgarin bested 55 other aspirants at the conclusion of the “Grand Final” at the MGI Hall in Bangkok, held two weeks since the candidates arrived in the “Land of Smiles” for the groundbreaking competition from the team behind the Miss Grand International pageant.

    The competition gathered those who have already taken part or won in an international pageant, and was open to women 20 to 40 years old regardless of marital status. Even mothers and transgender women were allowed to compete.

    “At the end of the season, as writers, we do this thing where we want so badly to get another season that we do a thousand cliffhangers so that Ted [Sarandos] and Bela [Bajaria] are just like, ‘Well, we got to know what happened, so let’s just pick it up,’” Running Point co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling explains at the show’s season two premiere. “At the beginning, it’s just like digging ourselves out of the hole of what we created, which is really fun.”

    Usually, I am not the biggest fan of sheer illusion panels, but I have to admit that I like how the balance of the sheer top half, column silhouette, and crystal-embellished cups works in Mindy Kaling’s favour, as I’m not sure a strapless version of this design would have been as compelling.

    Jay Ellis was his usual polished self, stepping into Spring tailoring with a Zegna Prince of Wales check jacket. The lightweight feel of the suit was amplified by the relaxed linen trousers. However, the black shoes land a little too heavily here. I would have expected someone with Jay’s style credentials to have served up something more complementary.

    Australia has lost the opening match of its Billie Jean King Cup tie against Great Britain, with Aussie spearhead Talia Gibson going down to teenager Mika Stojsavljevic in straight sets. 

    Gibson lost the opening set in a tiebreak, and came from 2-5 down in the second set to level at 5-5.

    But the world number 56 was outplayed by the 17-year-old Brit to fall 7-6(4), 7-5 at John Cain Arena in Melbourne.

    The result means Great Britian takes a 1-0 lead, with another singles match to be played on Friday. 

    Shock result for Aussies in Billie Jean King Cup opener

    Australia's quest to win a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is off to the worst possible start with spearhead Talia Gibson a shock loser to British teen Mika Stojsavljevic.

    Gibson was expected to get the tie at Melbourne's John Cain Arena off to a flying start on Friday for the home side, but she fell 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to the lowly-ranked 17-year-old.

    World No.56 Gibson took over as Australia's No.1 following injury to Maya Joint and arrived at the tie in sparkling form.

    The 21-year-old had recently beaten five top 20-ranked players and rocketed to her career-high ranking.
