Two men have been charged over the alleged kidnapping and murder of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian.

The 85-year-old was abducted from his home in North Ryde at 5am on February 13, in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

Gerard Andrews, 29, and Daniel Stevens, 24, did not apply for bail when they fronted court on Thursday.

A lawyer for one of the men charged over the kidnapping and murder of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian says his client is "no mastermind".

The 85-year-old was abducted from his home in North Ryde in the early hours of February 13, in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

The crucial mistakes that brought Chris Baghsarian’s alleged killers undone

The grandfather’s alleged killers botched a crime that gripped Sydney and blurred the line between innocent bystanders and the criminal underworld.

From the moment Chris Baghsarian was taken from his North Ryde home, detectives knew something wasn’t right; the 85-year-old widower lived a quiet life on his own, had never come to the attention of police, had no enemies and, as far as investigators could tell, had no reason to be the target of an abduction.

Within hours, it appeared certain that whoever snatched Baghsarian had made a grave mistake. Rather than making off with their intended target – the father of a convicted armed robber with links to the Alameddine crime family living a few doors down – the masked men had allegedly taken an innocent grandfather living out his later years in Sydney suburbia.

Optus executives spoke earlier to the parliamentary inquiry on September’s triple zero outage.

The chief executive, Stephen Rue, was asked by Liberal senator Sarah Henderson whether he believed the company had a “culture of carelessness” leading up to the outage.

double quotation markYeah. I agree with that, Senator. I think the transformation program that I put in place on this from when I started, actually, which is always going to take time, I’m afraid. But a key component of that is culture. It’s culture and risk. It’s culture and following processes, culture and having process in some cases, it’s culture around customers, around the fact that, as I always say to people that you can get caught up in technology, but actually what really matters is the service you provide to people to to run business, to do their health care.

A Sydney doctor trying to help families linked to Islamic State return to Australia says he is confident the women and children will eventually be repatriated.

Jamal Rifi, an Order of Australia recipient known for his advocacy in Muslim communities, made headlines last week when reports emerged he was helping the 34 Australian citizens stuck in a detention camp in Syria.

The group, consisting of 11 women and 23 children, had last Monday tried to leave the camp and make their journey onwards to Australia, but were forced to turn around by Syrian authorities shortly afterwards.

Just after question time on 23 November 2022, the federal parliament debated a motion relating to the repatriation of four Australian women and 13 children who had been stuck in a Syrian detention camp since the fall of Islamic State three years prior.

One after another Labor MPs argued with passion, clarity and logic about why it was not just acceptable, but necessary and morally right, for the federal government to assist the return of its own citizens from the squalid and dangerous camps.

I need to clarify why, as a doctor, I have been in Syria, helping with efforts to bring children and their mothers back to Australia. Thus far, given the sensitivities, and for the children’s sake, I have chosen not to enter the political debate that I have seen swirling at home. But now, while I am still in the Middle East, away from my beloved Australia, I must explain my role, dispel misinformation and respond to a particularly flawed policy proposal to make it a crime to assist in the repatriation of the 34 Australian citizens trapped in Syria’s detention camps.

Rhyan Grant says Sydney FC haven't forgotten Brisbane Roar's antics as they face each other for the first time since a pre-season game between the teams descended into chaos and was abandoned by officials.

As a quirk of the A-League Men draw, Saturday's round-18 meeting at Allianz Stadium is the first time the Sky Blues and the Roar will meet in the league this season.

Talay – We need to manage moments better

Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay says his side must combine composure with intensity when they host Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With three games in the space of a week, Talay confirmed his squad has handled the short turnaround well heading into another pivotal fixture in the run home.

“They’ll get their last session in this morning in preparation for Brisbane. It’s been a short turnaround again — three games in a week — but overall the boys are looking fine and ready to go.”

Talay also addressed his on-field exchange with Al Hassan Toure during the week, making it clear there are no lingering issues.

CBS has officially renewed NCIS: Sydney for Season 4, confirming that the series will set a benchmark that may upset many fans of the franchise. 'NCIS: Sydney' Season 4: Cast, Premiere Date, More Details

One of TV’s most popular franchises is going to continue to be a hit for CBS.

CBS already has 16 shows set for its 2026-2027 season, and among them are the NCIS shows. This year, the three — NCIS, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney — air back-to-back-to-back on Tuesday nights.

Read on for everything we know so far about an NCIS: Sydney Season 4, from the cast to a premiere date and more.

Yes, it was one of 10 series that CBS renewed in January for the 2026-2027 season.

It’s too soon to know. That won’t be announced until after Season 3 finishes airing. So far, we just know it will be part of the 2026-2027 season. However, given the success of the three NCIS shows on Tuesdays, we could see CBS keeping that going next year, assuming all three shows, including NCIS: Sydney, premiere in the fall. And if that’s the case, we’d put the Season 4 premiere date some time in late September or early October.

CBS has renewed its international NCIS spinoff for another season, with NCIS: Sydney officially set to return for Season 4. The Australia-based Navy procedural premiered in 2023, filling a critical void in programming amid the Hollywood actors and writers' strikes that year. The network has stuck with the International series since, despite canceling NCIS: Hawai'i in 2024.

Two Fan-Favorite CBS Shows Not Renewed

Two CBS shows face possible axing, after being excluded from the network's latest flurry of TV show renewals.

This week, CBS renewed 10 additional shows for its 2026-2027 schedule. Two of its biggest recent hits — the Young Sheldon spin-off-of-a-spin-off Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and Matlock — were both given the green light for a third season.

Other shows, namely Elsbeth, NCIS: Sydney, and Tracker, are all returning for Season 4. Fire Country was renewed for Season 5, NCIS for Season 24, and its prequel, NCIS: Origins, was renewed for Season 3. The CBS reality shows The Amazing Race and Survivor received orders for seasons 38 and 51, respectively.

Sydney Millionaire Surgeon Guilty of Serious Misconduct

Jerry Schwartz, a millionaire and suspended cosmetic surgeon from Sydney, has been found guilty of professional misconduct. This verdict significantly impacts his lengthy efforts to resume patient care.

In a ruling released recently, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) determined that Schwartz violated existing restrictions by administering fentanyl to eight patients during cosmetic procedures between 2019 and 2021. These actions breach his medical license conditions originally enforced in 2013, which specifically prohibited him from providing conscious sedation.

Schwartz has faced multiple restrictions since 2013, including a 2017 mandate barring him from conscious sedation. His suspension comes after a history of cases where he failed to meet professional standards.
