An image of a menorah will be projected onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge to honour the 15 people killed in the Bondi terror attack.

The City of Sydney initially planned to light up the bridge with an image of a dove with the words "peace".

In an open letter on Monday, Jewish creatives criticised the "generic" use of the dove and urged for a "Jewish-specific symbol".

The City of Sydney has made last-minute changes to Sydney's New Year's Eve tribute to the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack, after receiving an open letter signed by Jewish creatives.

Hope instead of hate will be the focus for Australians as they prepare to ring in the new year at live sites across the country.

All eyes will be on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which will be lit white at 11pm to commemorate the victims of the Bondi Beach massacre.

A menorah will also be projected onto the pylons to remember the 15 people who were killed and the 41 others who were injured during the December 14 terror attack.

Officers armed with assault rifles will patrol Sydney’s streets. But do more imposing police make us feel any safer?

The NSW premier wants ‘the public to be assured that there is a comprehensive and massive police response’ to Bondi. But at what cost?

Chris Minns wants more visible weapons on Sydney’s streets to keep us safe.

The New South Wales premier authorised some police to carry assault rifles during this New Year’s Eve celebrations. He’s also in discussions with the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, about a role for the army on the streets, while also contemplating whether the private security force that protects Jewish places – the Community Security Group – should be armed too.

It’s an understandable reaction to the horror at Bondi on 14 December, and his thinking is no doubt driven by a sense of responsibility to act.

Sydney’s new fish market will join the world’s biggest as an attraction

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Fish have been traded for millennia. There is evidence of sophisticated seafood markets in China dating back more than 3000 years. Jerusalem’s Fish Gate is referenced in the Old Testament. In Australia, the fish traps at Brewarrina (Baiame’s Ngunnhu) in outback NSW – estimated to be anywhere from several thousand to up to 40,000 years old – also had trading aspects to them.

For contemporary seaside communities, fish markets are integral to local identity, and none display that relationship more prominently – or more proudly – than Sydney, where the working harbour colours every aspect of life and the fruits of the fresh catch appear on tables and menus as everything from easy family meals to exquisite fine dining.

Why the Sydney Fish Market had to move to its new venue

This year’s Christmas marathon, when sellers open for 36 hours, will be the 30th and last at the current site. Retailers are expecting a “last hurrah” rush.

GetFish owner Tony Muollo says he will miss the charm of the current fish market, but he’s ready to move on to a facility that will make distributing and selling fish easier. Oscar Colman

″The old Fish Market has been good to me, but every era has its use-by date.”

GetFish founder Tony Muollo is feeling more pragmatic than sentimental as he prepares his retail store at the Sydney Fish Market for the annual Christmas marathon next week. The marathon – during which retailers open their doors for 36 hours straight, from 5am on December 23 to 5pm on Christmas Eve – will be the 30th and the last at its current site.

Kendrick Lamar review – with Doechii revving up the crowd, this is an extraordinary show for the ages

AAMI Park, MelbourneRap’s ‘swamp princess’ had the audience in the palm of her hand before Lamar dazzled with pyrotechnics and Drake disses

Aside from the immediate delight that comes from seeing two of the biggest names in rap in one show, there is a pleasing asymmetry in Doechii and Kendrick Lamar performing together. Fame is still new enough for Doechii, rap’s “swamp princess” and most rapidly ascending star, that her rapid-fire lyrics mostly revel in the pleasures it offers and announce her ambitions for greatness. Lamar, on the other hand, has achieved new heights with tracks that detail his weariness and irritation with the trappings of fame – mainly all the pretenders and hangers-on who don’t treat rap seriously (yeah, Drake) and don’t deserve to cower in his shadow.

Sydney's west could crack 40 degrees as heatwave rolls across Australia

Sydneysiders head for a dip as the mercury nears 40 degrees in parts of NSW. (AAP: Bianca De Marchi)

The first heatwave of the summer will reach its peak across New South Wales today, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius likely to span from Western Australia's north-west all the way to Parramatta.

The heatwave has also sparked an extreme fire danger warning for large parts of NSW.

But reprieve is around the corner — at least in NSW — with a cold front set to bring a cooler change by the end of the weekend.

It's the first taste of what's likely to be a hot summer for most of the country, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's long-range outlook.

More than a dozen homes have been destroyed near major urban centres after a fast-moving fire swept through bushland in extreme heatwave conditions.

Emergency warnings were issued for residents near fires on the NSW Central Coast and in the Hunter region on Saturday as 75 fires burned across the state.

At least 12 homes have been destroyed by a bushfire at Koolewong, not far from built-up areas on the Central Coast.

The Sydney Thunder are officially out of the tournament now, with five losses after eight games, and just five points on the board so far, it has been a struggle for the Thunder.

Their leading batters have been Heather Knight and Tahlia Wilson while Phoebe Litchfield has been the most aggressive of them. Her bowling has been led by Shabnim Ismail and has been supported by Chamari Athapaththu and Samantha Bates.

The other side to have struggled, the Brisbane Heat are at the risk of being the first team that has gone winless through the season, a fortune they would like to change.
