Gold climbs back above $US4600 as investors weigh Fed rate path

The Australian sharemarket tumbled the most in three months as traders and economists ramped up bets on a fourth interest rate rise by the Reserve Bank of Australia this year following a hot inflation report.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 1 per cent, or 89.60 points, to 9038.20, the most since early June amid broad selling, with nine of the 11 sectors weaker as traders also digested another round of corporate earnings.

Money markets imply a 50:50 chance the cash rate will rise to 4.6 per cent at the September 29 policy meeting, up from 13 per cent earlier this week and are almost fully priced by the end of the year.

ASX slumps on rate hike calls; Qantas lifts, Wesfarmers, Sigma slump

The Australian sharemarket had its biggest slump in 12 weeks as bets firmed for another interest rate rise as early as next month and investors digested another flood of results from companies including Qantas and Wesfarmers.

The S&P/ASX 200 fell 89.60 points, or 1 per cent, to 9038.20 on Thursday, with all 11 sectors in the red bar healthcare and industrials. The losses came after the bourse fell 0.4 per cent on Wednesday as shock inflation figures put another rate hike on the table. Wall Street drifted through a quiet session overnight after a report showed US inflation was also worse than expected.

Expectations of another rate rise by the Reserve Bank firmed after the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday underlying inflation in July had unexpectedly risen by 0.5 per cent. The gauge most watched by the RBA had been forecast to ease, but instead remained steady at 3.6 per cent.

Three stars could return for Brisbane clash

Collingwood’s Head of High Performance Jarrod Wade has provided an injury and health update ahead of Collingwood’s Round 24 match against the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Friday night.

Isaac Quaynor sustained a minor glute injury in Saturday’s game against Hawthorn. He will miss Collingwood’s Round 24 game against Brisbane and is expected to be available for selection for finals.

Jeremy Howe has progressed well through his rehabilitation following a fractured arm. His availability for selection will be assessed following main training on Wednesday.

Brayden Maynard has progressed well through his rehabilitation following a minor procedure to his pes anserinus. His availability for selection will be assessed following main training on Wednesday.

Reality of Cats’ next free agent win we’re all ignoring; ‘smoke and mirrors’ issue in AFL debate

You can’t have an honest debate about resting players when the AFL can’t even tell fans who’s actually injured.

The AFL’s inaugural Wildcard round has created the perfect storm for resting players. Collingwood this weekend should have the right to manipulate and manage workloads as it sees fit, while it’d be in the best interest of minor premiers Fremantle – which has nothing to play for against Carlton – to sit a few players who need a week off.

Collingwood will be without defender Isaac Quaynor for their clash with Brisbane, while Pat Lipinski and Harry Perryman have been held back for another week.

Locked into a wildcard spot, the Magpies face a dilemma about how they approach Friday night's clash with the Lions at the MCG.

Due to finishing in the seventh to 10th bracket, Collingwood don't earn a week off heading into finals and will need to carefully manage their players this weekend.

Three Scots College boys charged with rape of teenage girl

Three students from Sydney’s prestigious Scots College have been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in an eastern suburbs alley way.

A 13-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys were arrested on Thursday over the alleged assault on July 22.

The 13-year-old and one of the 14-year-olds was charged with aggravated sexual assault in the company of others, and two counts of aggravated sexual touching of another person. The other 14-year-old was charged with a single count each of the same offences.

The boys, who cannot legally be identified, were granted conditional police bail and will appear in a children’s court on August 25.

‘Shock’ after former Wallabies, rugby league star loses cancer fight

A former Wallabies and rugby league star has died after a health battle. He was 59.

Brian Smith played five Tests for the Wallabies in 1987, before controversially switching allegiance to Ireland and playing a further nine. He then played 43 league matches for Balmain and Eastern Suburbs in the early ’90s.

Senegal jails three TikTok influencers over posts criticising president Faye

A Senegalese court has sentenced three TikTok influencers to prison for posts that allegedly insulted President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The ruling has triggered criticism from those who say it reflects growing concerns over freedom of expression and online speech in Senegal.

The three influencers work with an online content platform. Some observers say the platform’s content is favourable towards former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the leader of the PASTEF party.

The case comes as tensions rise within Senegal’s ruling political camp following a public split between President Faye and Sonko, who were once close allies. Faye recently launched his own political party, further deepening divisions between the two political figures.

Three venues in five hours: How the royals spent a day at the Commonwealth Games

Glasgow: They arrived at Australia’s netball semi-final against Jamaica with little fanfare.

But the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their three children George, Charlotte and Louis ended Saturday, local time, having squeezed more Commonwealth Games action – and at more venues – in a single day than probably any spectator over the past 10 days.

In fact, so much did they pack in to such a small amount of time that it would not surprise to discover they’d used the same Tardis that King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped out of at the Games’ opening ceremony.

Though probably not by design, there was a distinct Australian flavour to the royals’ whirlwind visit to Glasgow.

William and Kate bring children to Commonwealth Games netball and cycling events

The Prince and Princess of Wales have brought their three children to watch some of the final sporting events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Cheering crowds at the city's OVO Hydro were treated to exhilarating performances in the netball semi-finals where the family watched New Zealand's 61-54 win over England.

Known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland, the couple also spent time meeting athletes, staff and volunteers during a slightly blustery visit to the venue on the River Clyde.

They then made their way to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – where they chatted to British cyclist Dame Laura Kenny and sat one row behind another Olympic cycling champion, Sir Chris.

AFL has three clear options for expanding to 20 teams. The best one has a big, orange problem

The 19th AFL club took a major step towards reality on Monday, when former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was named the Tasmania Devils’ inaugural coach.

While their new Macquarie Point stadium remains a work in progress, the Devils are on track to enter the league in 2028, at which point one team will be forced into a bye each week.

For that, and several other reasons, a 20th team shouldn’t be too far away.

Roth reveals key to winning over Tasmania

The Tasmania JackJumpers have been a hit since they entered the NBL during the 2021-22 season, and now their AFL state counterparts, the Devils, are aiming to follow suit.

The Devils this week took their next step to joining the AFL as its 19th team in 2028 by announcing Ken Hinkley as their inaugural coach.

One man who knows all about coaching on the Apple Isle is JackJumpers’ Scott Roth, who offered advice to his Tasmanian counterpart.

"This state is big, and people want to see you," Roth said to the ABC.

"They want to see you in the coffee shops, they want to see you in the gas station, they want to see you going through the supermarket or wherever. You've gotta be out there pressing the flesh."

Buckley opts out of Dons, Blues coaching races after Tasmania snub

Nathan Buckley says he still wants to be an AFL head coach.  (Getty Images: Quinn Rooney)

Nathan Buckley says he will not join the coaching races at either Essendon or Carlton after being overlooked by Tasmania.

Tasmania chose to appoint former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley over Buckley as its inaugural senior coach.

Despite the snub, Buckley says he is adamant he wants to coach at a second AFL club.

A disappointed Nathan Buckley is ruling out bidding for other vacant AFL head coaching jobs after being overlooked by the Tasmania Devils.

While Buckley, who openly coveted the Tasmanian post that went to Ken Hinkley, says he wants to be a head coach again, he is unlikely to pitch for the vacant positions at Essendon and Carlton.

‘No Plan B’: Brailey’s three-week race to overcome ‘impossible’ setback; Blues to unleash bash brothers

The Melbourne Storm have responded to comments from legendary NSW coach Phil Gould, which lit the fuse for this year’s Origin decider, labelling Queensland hooker Harry Grant a “cheat”.

Grant’s in-game antics had already caught the attention of NSW players, with the Storm superstar constantly seen speaking to referee Ashley Klein in Game 2 at the MCG.

It is nothing new for Grant, who also found himself in the spotlight after Penrith skipper Nathan Cleary accused him of “playing” for a penalty in Melbourne’s golden point win.

Blayke Brailey shoved his broken arm back into place. Now he can’t even look at the scar

For a man who shoved his broken wrist back into place – twice – Blayke Brailey is surprisingly squeamish about the eight-centimetre scar left behind.

“I can’t even look at it,” the Sharks skipper and Blues bench hooker says.

“I get queasy about blood and those sorts of things. Even a scar like this, I don’t like looking at it.”

Brailey can appreciate how weird it sounds. He shocked Cronulla’s medical staff when, as he was walking from the field, he pushed a bone back into place after an awkward tackle on Manly’s Jason Saab a month ago.

No Way? No Worries: Behind Blayke Brailey’s stunning Origin comeback

For a brief moment, Blayke Brailey had finally reached rugby league's biggest stage.

Two days later, he feared it had all been ripped away.

The Sharks hooker had barely begun to soak in the emotion of his State of Origin debut before a devastating broken forearm against Manly threatened to end his series.

Instead, Brailey produced one of the fastest recoveries of the year, returning in just three weeks to keep his Origin dream alive before earning another phone call from Blues coach Laurie Daley.

Speaking to Zero Tackle, Brailey admitted that being forced to watch from the sidelines after his dream debut was gruelling.

Do you qualify for three hours of free electricity? Here's how it works

Scheduling appliances such as washing machines to run during a free power period is one way people could save. (Adobe Stock)

Some Australian households will soon be able to access at least three hours of free electricity each day.

The Solar Sharer Offer (SSO) is set to be introduced in New South Wales, South Australia and south-east Queensland from July 1.

With some providers already offering periods of free electricity in the middle of the day, what do these new changes mean for you and how can you make the most of a free window of electricity at home?

For a start, you'll have to be in NSW, South Australia or south-east Queensland to take advantage of the scheme, because it will only apply to people in areas covered by the Australian Energy Regulator's Default Market Offer.

Some households can get free electricity from Wednesday. Are you eligible?

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Some Australians in the country's east will soon be able to receive free electricity for three hours per day, as part of the federal government's Solar Sharer Offer.

Starting Wednesday, the scheme is designed to give more households access to solar power when it's most abundant during the day, the scheme will be available to renters and homeowners living in NSW, South Australia and south-east Queensland, all of which are covered by the Default Market Offer (DMO).

Set by the Australian Energy Regulator, the DMO is the maximum price that energy retailers can charge residential and small business customers on a standing offer electricity contract. Other states and territories have their own systems.

Three Free Hours: A Tale Of Three Batteries

Get up to 3 free quotes for solar, batteries, EV chargers or hot water heat pumps

Free power windows arrive for most Australians on July 1. If you own a battery, you probably want to configure it to take advantage, and fill it for free, from the grid.

But your battery will not do this on its own. Out of the box, it has no clue your free window exists. Somebody has to open the app and tell it, and that somebody is you.

How hard is it to configure? Depends entirely on your brand. To show you the range you might be walking into, I’ve looked into how to set it up on the three batteries I own: a Powerwall 2 on the family home, a Sungrow on the Airbnb, and an iStore on the shed. Same job for all three, fill as fast as you can during the free window. Three completely different fights, from a two-minute job to a swearing fit.
