Tropical Cyclone Narelle could make 3 landfalls, forecast says

On the other side of the world, a tropical cyclone churning through Australia has made landfall as a Category 4 storm and could make up to two more landfalls as the storm progresses through the weekend.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle made landfall the morning of March 20 as a Category 4 storm, moving over land in Far North Queensland in remote parts of Australia, according to the country's Bureau of Meteorology.

(To clarify, hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same type of storm, known collectively as tropical cyclones. They have different names depending on what part of the world they form in.)

Since making landfall, the storm brought severe rainfall to the region as it tracked west, most recently located over the Gulf of Carpentaria. It has weakened to a Category 2 tropical cyclone, but is expected to undergo a period of reintensification as it prepares to make landfall again, forecasters said.

Narelle downgraded as NT braces for flood, WA enters warning zone — as it happened

Tropical Cyclone Narelle has been downgraded to a tropical low as it moves across the Northern Territory towards Western Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it is the first weather system in more than 20 years forecast to hit three states and territories, after it crossed Cape York in Far North Queensland on Friday.

Keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology's warnings page for updates on that severe weather warning, flood warnings and the tropical low's track map.

That information and more is also on Secure NT's Facebook page.

The team will also have updates every half hour on ABC Darwin 105.7 for the rest of the day and tonight.

The air was dry for the first time in months on Saturday, a perverse trick as moisture is drawn into another storm system bearing down on the Northern Territory.

Tropical Cyclone Narrelle is the seventh high-risk weather event to hit Australia’s north in just five months.

“This is Country and water talking to us, letting us know that we’ve gone too far,” says evacuee and Mangarayi traditional owner Cilia Lake.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a tropical low in the Coral Sea east-north-east of Cairns will bring severe weather to the mainland from today.

A cyclone watch from Cooktown to Palm Island has been cancelled with the weather bureau calling the tropical low off Queensland "disorganised".

A severe weather warning has been issued for the far north Queensland Peninsula, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands due to heavy rain.

North Queensland is bracing for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding as disorganised tropical low 29U approaches the mainland.

Rainy with a chance of storms across Brisbane as possible cyclone feared in north

Rain could fall in Brisbane through the weekend and beyond, as a possible cyclone approaches the state’s north.

Showers are predicted in the south-east until Tuesday, with severe storms possible.

Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Meteorology said the weather system off the coast near Cooktown might drive moisture towards Brisbane in coming days.

“We do start to see the increase in tropical moisture from later tomorrow and particularly over the weekend,” he said.

He said Sunday could be the wettest day, with an upper-level trough moving across the region.

Alert issued for dangerous tropical cyclone off WA coast

A cyclone warning has been issued for a huge stretch of the State’s north west coast as a tropical low intensifies over the Kimberley.

Residents from Exmouth to Onslow have been urged to prepare for wind gusts this weekend of up to 120km/h, heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology advice advises that the low is heading west over the central Kimberley area, and is expected to move offshore on Friday.

Once offshore, it is expected to develop into a cyclone, track parallel to the Pilbara coast and then potentially turn towards the coast south of Exmouth.

The Katherine River has reached its highest level in five years at 15.3 metres.

The river peaked just shy of the 16-metre minor flood level, which hasn't happened since the last flood in 2006.

The weather bureau says the situation could change again, with more rain forecast over the next 48 hours.

Residents in the Top End town of Katherine are being urged to check their flood kits and make plans in case the river rises again, after it peaked about 70 centimetres below flood levels on Monday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a high chance the tropical low off the Coral Coast could become a tropical cyclone from tomorrow.

Locally intense rainfall and damaging winds are forecast for parts of the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays.

The BOM will continue to monitor the system and issue further warnings if the low develops into a tropical cyclone.

A category one cyclone is now highly likely to form off the coast of north Queensland this weekend and cross the coast late tomorrow or on Sunday.

“It sounds completely absurd,” grazier Angus Propsting says. “But they are actually perishing because they are not drinking, even though they are surrounded by water.”

Some of the famished cattle look upon grass tens of metres from where they perch.
