The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a high chance the tropical low off the Coral Coast could become a tropical cyclone from tomorrow.

Locally intense rainfall and damaging winds are forecast for parts of the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays.

The BOM will continue to monitor the system and issue further warnings if the low develops into a tropical cyclone.

A category one cyclone is now highly likely to form off the coast of north Queensland this weekend and cross the coast late tomorrow or on Sunday.

Stranded upon sodden islands that dot the submerged plains of outback north-west Queensland, encircled by fresh water and with grass growing before their eyes, tens of thousands of cattle are dying of thirst and hunger.

“It sounds completely absurd,” grazier Angus Propsting says. “But they are actually perishing because they are not drinking, even though they are surrounded by water.”

Some of the famished cattle look upon grass tens of metres from where they perch.

The threat of a cyclone in Far North Queensland has forced the postponement of Cairns' NBL clash with rivals Brisbane.

Saturday's clash between the league's bottom two sides at the Cairns Convention Centre was postponed on Friday due to the forced closure of the venue.

Forecasters expect a slow-moving low to cross the coast between Cairns and Ayr – about a 400km span – on Saturday evening or early Sunday morning.
