    President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

    Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.

    The U.S. and Iran have nonetheless continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz the primary flashpoint.

    Kuwait's army said its air defenses are intercepting Iranian drone attacks. Iranian state media Fars said that the Ali Al Salem Base, which hosts U.S. troops, was targeted.

    Ukraine and nine other countries including the UK, Germany and France are to build a shared protection programme for Europe against ballistic missiles, using Kyiv’s experience in fighting Russia’s full-scale invasion for more than four years.

    “Our goal is to build a shared ballistic missile defence capability for Europe,” the 10 nations said in a statement on Monday as leaders met the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for talks in Paris.

    The announcement came as the UK also signed up to participate in the EU’s €90bn (£77bn) support loan for Ukraine, meaning UK firms will be able to provide more weapons paid for by the funds. The move is the latest push by the EU and Britain to work more closely after Britain quit the bloc in 2020 as a result of the Brexit vote.

    Trump reinstating naval blockade of Iranian ports

    President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

    The blockade would stop "Iran's ships or customers" from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but "all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait", he said in a social media post.

    Trump insisted the strait "will remain OPEN, with or without Iran". Iran earlier said it would not allow the US to "interfere" in management of the waterway, which it said was closed.

    Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait's control on Monday after exchanging another wave of strikes in the region overnight.

    US and Iran vie for Strait of Hormuz in latest attacks

    Dubai: The United States and Iran each asserted on Monday they controlled the Strait of Hormuz after a weekend of attacks stretching across the wider Middle East, further threatening any diplomacy to end the war.

    The attacks, sparked by Iran striking a container ship on Sunday in the strait off the coast of Oman, again underlined that the waterway that once saw a fifth of the world’s traded crude oil and natural gas pass through it remained the key issue in negotiations. The narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf has seen shipping disrupted since the start of the war as Iran maintained a chokehold on it by attacking commercial vessels around it, intimidating shippers.

    Australian National University maritime security specialist Jennifer Parker says it's going to be an "extended conflict".

    However, it doesn't sound like we should be expecting all-out war between Iran and the US.

    "Now, that probably doesn't look like the intensity of conflict that we saw in March and April," she says.

    "It probably looks like these lulls with a tit–for–tat retaliation and some strikes on the strait and then back to negotiations.

    Iran war live: Tehran insists on control of Hormuz amid reports of US talks

    Washington and Tehran have agreed to stop attacks and renew talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, Axios reports.

    US says it has agreed to 'stand down' after exchange of strikes with Iran

    The US and Iran have agreed to "stand down" following an exchange of strikes over the past few days, according to a US official.

    It comes after several attacks in and around the Strait of Hormuz, culminating in both nations accusing each other of violating their ceasefire.

    The official confirmed to the BBC's US partner CBS News that vessels will now be able to move through the waterway "freely", and added that renewed talks aimed at ending the war will continue.

    Iran has not commented on the reports that it has agreed to halt strikes in the strait.

    On 17 June, the US and Iran signed a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which included an "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts".

    Thousands killed in US-Israeli war on Iran – but experts say true total may never be known

    Thousands of people have been killed across the Middle East since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in February, official figures show, with a deal now agreed to end the war.

    More than 7,300 people have been killed in Iran and Lebanon since 28 February, according to official casualty reports from those countries. Among them are hundreds of children and dozens of healthcare workers. Scores more people have been killed across the wider region.

    However, some analysts say the figures are almost certainly an undercount and experts told BBC Verify that internet, media and government restrictions – coupled with unreliable figures due to the presence of armed groups in some areas – have hampered reporting.

    The findings of this report indicate that civilians have borne the greatest burden of the 2026 U.S.–Israel–Iran war. Women and children have been particularly affected by death, injury, displacement, and the disruption of essential services. In Iran, the conflict has also deepened existing patterns of repression and insecurity, particularly in the context of the Women, Life, Freedom movement, further restricting civic space and increasing everyday risks for many communities.  

    It is important to note that the situation remains fragile. Although diplomatic efforts have raised hopes for de-escalation, including discussions surrounding a ceasefire and a possible peace agreement, reports of military activity have continued, and a durable end to hostilities has yet to be secured.

    The federal government’s special investigator for war crimes allegations and the Australian federal police have asked the anti-corruption commission to investigate media leaks about the arrest of Ben Roberts-Smith.

    Arrested at Sydney airport on 7 April, the Victoria Cross recipient faces five charges of war crime murder over allegations he killed unarmed civilians during his service with the Australian SAS in Afghanistan.

    The former SAS corporal has vehemently denied the charges, saying “I categorically deny all of these allegations”.

    War crimes office wants investigation into Ben Roberts-Smith leak

    The Commonwealth investigator into alleged Australian war crimes has referred concerns to the national corruption watchdog over how media appeared to know in advance about Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith’s arrest at Sydney Airport last month.

    The Office of the Special Investigator says it has asked the National Anti-Corruption Commission to examine whether operational details were improperly disclosed before Roberts-Smith was taken into custody on April 7 and charged with five counts of war crimes.

    Prosecutors allege he murdered unarmed civilians during his service with the Australian SAS in Afghanistan.

    He faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for each charge. The former SAS corporal has rejected the charges, saying “I categorically deny all of these allegations”.

    The general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces has reeled off a list of Ukrainian aerial weaponry used to destroy targets in the Moscow region over the weekend, including the RS-1 “Bars” jet-powered UAV, the Firepoint FP-1 winged drone, and a drone previously unknown to observers and analysts, dubbed the Bars-SM Gladiator.

    Ukraine’s SBU security service highlighted a strike on the Angstrom plant in Zelenograd, Moscow region, Russia, which “specialises in the production of hi-tech products and microcircuits for high-precision weapons … A fire was recorded on the territory of the facility. The enterprise is an important component of the Russian military-industrial complex and is involved in the production of microelectronics, radio electronics, optical systems, and robotics for the enemy’s military needs.”

    AUDIO: Ukraine launches drone attack on Russia

    Ukraine has launched another lethal drone strike in Russia, killing at least four people, with its president threatening more are to come.

    Large-scale Ukrainian drone attack kills three in Moscow region, says Russia

    At least three people were killed and several injured overnight in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Russian officials have said.

    A woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, and a person was trapped under rubble, regional governor Andrei Vorobiev said. A man and a woman were killed in the village of Pogorelki.

    A male Indian citizen was killed and three others injured, India's Moscow embassy said, but it was not clear whether these casualties were included in Vorobiev's tally. Another person died in Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes were an "entirely justified" response to deadly Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
