The 69-year-old actor narrates and executive-produces World War II with Tom Hanks, a sweeping 20-episode documentary series premiering Memorial Day – Monday, May 25 – on the History Channel at 8 p.m. ET. It is his most ambitious WWII project yet, and by his own account, his most personal.

"During my formative years, every single adult in my life would make references to two words: The War," Hanks has said. "The lasting effects of WWII on the world and my own family were not lost on me."

Tom Hanks’ Binge-Worthy WWII Series Officially Releases in 2 Weeks

Throughout his many years as one of the world’s most famous actors, Tom Hanks has starred in some of the most famous WWII movies of all time. His WWII magnum opus came all the way back in 1998 when he teamed up with Steven Spielberg for Saving Private Ryan, the visceral and emotional war epic that’s still hailed to this day as one of the greatest movies of all time. A few years ago, Hanks reunited with Spielberg for Masters of the Air, a new WWII series streaming on Apple TV starring Callum Turner and Austin Butler. Hanks has another massive WWII submarine epic on Apple TV, Greyhound, which was first releasedin 2020. The demand for more Greyhound was so immense that Apple TV greenlit a sequel to the film, which is now in production.

Iran war live updates: Israeli PM Netanyahu says Iran's uranium must be 'taken out' before war ends

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium must be "taken out" before the war against the nation can be considered over.

In an interview with CBS News's 60 Minutes, he also refused to give a timeline for an end to the war with Hezbollah.

Earlier, Iran said it had responded to a US proposal for peace talks to end the war, but US President Donald Trump called it "totally unacceptable".

Trump news at a glance: Trump wants to ‘go in’ to Iran to secure nuclear material, Netanyahu claims

Iran says it has responded to US peace proposal as ceasefire comes under strain and Israeli prime minister says war is ‘not over’

Benjamin Netanyahu has said the war with Iran will continue as long as the country has a stockpile of highly enriched uranium (HEU), which could be used to make nuclear warheads.

“It’s not over, because there’s still nuclear material – enriched uranium – that has to be taken out of Iran. There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled,” the Israeli prime minister told the CBS programme 60 Minutes, according to an excerpt published before its broadcast.

U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, rejected Iran's counteroffer to end the war with the U.S. and Israel. "I have just read the response from Iran's so-called "Representatives." I don't like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!"

War in the Middle East: latest developments

Paris (France) (AFP) – The latest developments in the Middle East war:

Iran's chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that his country had "not even started" and that US actions in the Strait of Hormuz had put shipping at risk.

Stocks sank across Asian exchanges as a fresh spike in Middle East tensions fanned fears over the fragile US-Iran ceasefire, and oil prices fell back slightly after gains on Monday.

Denmark's freight giant Maersk said one of its ships had sailed through the Strait of Hormuz under US escort, adding the transit was completed "without incident".

Iran foreign minister presses on with regional tour despite Trump canceling envoys’ visit

    • Hectic diplomacy: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has landed in Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin and discuss the status of negotiations, according to state media, after visiting with key mediators in Pakistan and Oman this weekend. Araghchi said earlier that it’s not clear if Washington is “truly serious about diplomacy” after US President Donald Trump scrapped plans for his envoys to visit Pakistan.

    • Peace talks stalled: Trump said talks will continue by phone after Iran declined to meet directly with American negotiators amid ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. “If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us,” Trump said Sunday and reiterated that the war would “come to an end very soon.”

Trump and Tehran’s series of mismanaged posts stall progress towards peace

US president’s desperation for war to end has seen him trying to speed through a process he does not fully control

A set of mismanaged and premature media announcements by Donald Trump and Tehran has led to the collapse of progress towards a peace settlement between Iran and the US.

The recent missteps ended with Iran saying it would reinstate a complete block on the movement of commercial shipping through the strait of Hormuz and that it would not allow any of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to be exported out of the country.

The chain of events started when the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, posted on X on Friday soon after the markets opened in the US.

China, US war tensions ramp up as tanker remains stuck

A Chinese-linked tanker is being closely watched around the Strait of Hormuz as the US blockade risks a showdown between the world’s two biggest economies.

Tokyo | The Rich Starry, a US-sanctioned tanker linked to China, has spent most of its commission trying to avoid the spotlight.

But the ship, falsely flying a Maltese flag and carrying 250,000 barrels of methanol, was thrust into the Iran-US war this week as US President Donald Trump’s military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz escalated tensions between the United States and China.

Strait of Hormuz blockade: the complex regional realities the US ignores at its peril

After the breakdown of ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump has now ordered a blockade of the pivotal Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

It’s just the latest and most combustible phase of a broader regional conflict with global impacts and long, complex roots.

But while there has been copious analysis of this “coronary artery” of global oil and gas trade, much less attention has been paid to the history and sociopolitical fabric of the Hormuz region itself.

This is something of a blind spot, because understanding the deeper cultural dynamics of the strait and its surrounds can tell us something of what might now lie ahead.

Iran War Live Updates: Trump Offers Mixed Messages on War's End as U.S. Enforces Blockade on Hormuz

The diplomacy came as the White House dismissed reports that President Trump wanted to extend the cease-fire, while still expressing optimism that talks could yield an agreement.

Senior Pakistani mediators, including the army chief, Syed Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for talks aimed at shoring up the cease-fire between Iran and the United States before it expires next week.

Iran has continued to exchange messages with the United States through Pakistan since the initial talks ended without an agreement on Sunday, and the two sides have yet to agree to another round, Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, said Wednesday.

US Navy destroyer intercepts Iranian-flagged vessel trying to skirt blockade

The U.S. Navy prevented an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel from leaving Iran on Tuesday after it attempted to evade the maritime blockade that began Monday, U.S. Central Command announced.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance redirected the vessel back toward Iran after it fled Bandar Abbas, exited the Strait of Hormuz and was making its way along the Iranian coastline, according to a CENTCOM release.

“Ten vessels have now been turned around and zero ships have broken through since the start of the U.S. blockade on Monday,” the command’s post on X stated.

The U.S. Navy blockade, which involves 10,000 troops, over a dozen warships and more than 100 fighter and surveillance aircraft, went into effect Monday after President Donald Trump announced on social media that the U.S. would seal off the Strait of Hormuz following failed peace talks between the U.S. and Iran.

Top US Senate Democrats again try for war powers resolution – as it happened

As the prospect of a diplomatic resolution to end the US war on Iran remains in the balance, President Trump has directed some of his attention to attacking the media.

“For those people that still read The Failing New York Times and, despite the fact that Iran has been totally OBLITERATED, Militarily, and otherwise, you would think that Iran is actually winning or, at the very least, doing quite well — But that’s not true, and The New York Times knows that it’s FAKE NEWS!” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday afternoon.

Trump, who this morning posted an AI-generated image depicting him as Jesus Christ-like and later deleted it, also invoked rhetorical questions about “shame” and “decency.”

US President Donald Trump's deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz will expire at 10am AEST.

How might the Strait of Hormuz be reopened? Here are 3 scenarios

Australian National University provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has reached a critical juncture. President Donald Trump has demanded Iran reopen the strait or the United States will further intensify its military assault.

While the strait has not been totally closed to shipping, it has been substantially disrupted and transits have effectively slowed to a trickle. The strait is economically and strategically unique due to the access it provides to the Persian Gulf from which there is no exit point. All shipping passes in and out a single waterway.

The key navigational choke point borders Iran to the north and Oman to the south. It’s only 29 nautical miles wide (53 kilometres) and consists of two-mile-wide (just over three kilometres) navigable channels for inbound and outbound shipping as well as a two-mile-wide buffer zone. This is all in Iranian waters.
