Root keeps door ajar for Ashes return

Superstar batter completed his second century of the 2025-26 Ashes series on Monday

England's most prolific batter Joe Root concedes it's possible his heroic century at the SCG will come in his final Ashes appearance on Australian soil.

It must be noted, though, that while the next Ashes Test in Australia is scheduled for the summer of 2029-30, Root may return down under sooner, given the two teams are set to meet in the 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG in March 2027.

Root's Monday was spent batting in his customary No.4 position, helping the tourists to their largest innings total of the series.

Live: Beau Webster named as Australia 'pushed into a corner' by SCG pitch

Australia names Beau Webster to play his first Ashes Test in place of Jhye Richardson, with captain Steve Smith saying another seam-friendly pitch forced them to go without a frontline spinner.

The players are out on the field for the first time today.

Steve Smith says that although he would have batted first given the chance, there is some hope for a bit of movement early.

"There's a little bit of moisture in it. So yeah, hopefully the new ball does a little bit," Smith says.

“Long odds,” says Jack Gough, “but… tantalising possibility that Steve Smith gets 5 catches in this Test, Joe Root gets none and Smith then goes to the top of the leaderboard for most Test catches of all time.

”Smith has 11 catches in 3 matches so far and Root has 3 catches in 4 matches. What do you think?”

I think that’s a good spot. The point Stokes made about the bowlers – that Australia’s have been better under pressure – could equally well apply to the slip catching.

It is the first time Australia has not fielded a frontline spinner at the SCG since 1887-88 according to statistician Adam Morehouse.
