    Kentucky governor tells Mitch McConnell: Prove you can serve or ‘resign’

    Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is giving Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., an ultimatum, demanding that he prove he’s still capable of serving in the U.S. Senate — or resign.

    “As Governor of the state you serve, I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign,” Beshear wrote in a letter to McConnell.

    Failing that, said Beshear, a Democrat, he’ll call on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., to “investigate” McConnell’s condition and “begin the process if warranted” of replacing him in the Senate. Beshear wrote a separate letter to Thune outlining the same demand.

    Missing Mitch’s Governor Speaks Out on Crucial Deadline

    Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has sought to pour cold water on one of the biggest theories surrounding the disappearance of Mitch McConnell as the mystery over the GOP Senator enters another week.

    For weeks, speculation has mounted that Monday, August 3, marked the deadline for Beshear to call a special election if McConnell were to vacate his seat.

    The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican has been MIA and unable to fulfill his Senate duties since he was hospitalized on June 14.

    But some believe that Republicans have been covering up his true condition in order for the supposed August 3 deadline to pass.

    With the seat still filled on Monday – and Beshear under pressure to act – the Democratic governor insisted on X that date carries “no legal impact”. He also pointed out that McConnell’s absence could actually benefit Democrats.

    Why Norris thinks he’s driving better than his title season

    Lando Norris has taken a moment to reflect on his and McLaren’s 2026 campaign so far.

    McLaren driver Lando Norris has expressed satisfaction over the level of performance he is delivering in 2026, believing he has driven “better than I probably did to this point last year”, when he was pushing for a maiden F1 world title.

    Norris recovered from a series of setbacks across the first half of the 2025 season – including costly Qualifying mistakes and a collision with team mate Oscar Piastri – to ultimately beat the Australian and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to the crown.

    The Briton had hoped to kick on and defend his title under the new-for-2026 regulations, but rivals Mercedes and Ferrari have taken the lion’s share of victories so far – Norris and McLaren only recording their first win of the campaign just before the summer break in Hungary.

    Oscar Piastri’s boss has defended the Aussie’s “comment in anger” after spraying his team and a rival driver during a frustrating race in Hungary.

    Piastri unleashed a tirade at rival Carlos Sainz and his own team McLaren after a frustrating race which led to him not finishing at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

    Piastri started at the grid in third and had a stellar start to push his way into first past his teammate Lando Norris on the opening lap.

    On lap 33, Piastri was told to use his pace because Lewis Hamilton had pitted, but countered that he didn’t have any pace on his tyres.

    Still, they are putting up a fight. This week, Domino’s shares jumped by nine per cent, partially due to a $259 million write down of their assets by optimising locations by closing 29 outlets across Australia and New Zealand.

    Domino’s cops $300m loss, shuts 29 stores in Australia, NZ

    Domino’s Pizza has delivered a brutal $300m hit to investors as the fast-food giant turns its back on cheap voucher deals and closes 29 local stores.

    The Aussie-led pizza chain posted its second annual loss since floating on the stock exchange two decades ago, driven by massive write-downs and failing overseas operations.

    The company is wiping off losses across struggling outlets in France and Taiwan following mass store closures in Japan.

    In Australia and New Zealand, 29 underperforming stores have been permanently shut.

    In a statement to the ASX, executive chairman Jack Cowin said the company had completed a balance sheet review to reflect current market conditions and strategic priorities.

    Twenty-two hours in an economy seat? I can’t begin to imagine what that’s going to feel like, but that’s what Qantas is proposing for its Project Sunrise, non-stop Sydney to London flights. The longest flight I’ve done in economy is the 14.5-hour marathon with Emirates from Sydney to Dubai, and that’s enough for me. By about five hours into the flight I’ve watched a movie, had a meal and now I’m getting restless and checking the flight map, and we’re not even halfway. The last four hours are torture.

    Why Norris thinks Spa Qualifying was one of his ‘best laps’

    Lando Norris delivered a magnificent lap to qualify third for the Belgian Grand Prix, but will be demoted to P13 due to a grid penalty.

    Lando Norris was enthused by his performance during Qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix as he delivered “one of the best laps I’ve ever done”, though he will not be able to fully reap the rewards due to a grid penalty.

    Before any track action took place at Spa-Francorchamps, McLaren confirmed that Norris would have to serve a 10-place grid drop after they chose to fit a new power electronics unit to his car, thereby exceeding the permitted allocation for the component.

    F1 2026 Belgian GP starting grid after four penalties

    Four grid penalties mean the starting grid for Formula 1's Belgian Grand Prix looks quite different from the qualifying result at Spa.

    Lando Norris, who qualified third, drops 10 places to 13th place because he's taken his fourth battery of the season.

    Lance Stroll has a 10-place grid penalty, so even though he qualified 22nd and last, he's set to actually start 20th, as Fernando Alonso (20 places) and Isack Hadjar (30 places) both have bigger penalties.

    So here's the starting grid as it stands, once those penalties have been applied.

    Marco Rubio has offered nonsensical rationale in attacking the court. The Trump administration’s real goal is impunity

    With the pointless war of choice in Iran going poorly, the Trump administration has declared a virtual war on the international criminal court (ICC). Secretary of state, Marco Rubio, vowed on Monday to “dismantle” the court as a supposed threat to US sovereignty. His rationale is laced with sophistry. The administration’s real goal is to secure impunity for war crimes, even those committed on the territory of ICC member states.

    In a Wall Street Journal op-ed and a video posted on X, Rubio conjures up a dystopia in which local American officials such as police officers or border patrol agents “could be dragged before an international court, tried by judges from random countries across the globe, found guilty under international laws we neither consent to nor control, and then imprisoned thousands of miles from America”.

    Lawyers condemn US campaign against ICC

    Human rights organisations and international law experts are condemning the US administration's pledge to dismantle the International Criminal Court.

    The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has described the ICC as an intolerable threat to US sovereignty and vowed to dismantle it brick by brick if necessary.

    The Trump administration wants to dismantle the International Criminal Court. Can it?

    On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote a blistering missive in the Wall Street Journal unveiling plans to dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC). He claimed it threatened “US soldiers, police officers, Border Patrol agents and elected leaders” under international laws that “we neither consent to nor control”.

    The State Department then unveiled the steps it would take to target the court, which include pressuring allies to resist ICC attempts to prosecute Americans, travel bans on ICC officials, and increased sanctions on the court.

    The State Department called the court an “intolerable threat to US sovereignty”.

    But Rubio’s claims show a wilful ignorance of international law, out of step with someone of his office.
