Qantas non-stop flights just flew over Europe’s carbon border

Project Sunrise is built around ultra-long-haul flying, meaning it falls outside the EC’s full carbon price rules. But the airline has won time, not permanent immunity.

Qantas executives could be forgiven for breathing a sigh of relief after Brussels just stopped short of imposing its full carbon price on the world’s longest international flights.

The European Commission had planned to extend the European Union emissions trading system (EU ETS) to all flights departing the bloc.

Twenty-two hours in an economy seat? I can’t begin to imagine what that’s going to feel like, but that’s what Qantas is proposing for its Project Sunrise, non-stop Sydney to London flights. The longest flight I’ve done in economy is the 14.5-hour marathon with Emirates from Sydney to Dubai, and that’s enough for me.
