‘It’s going to upset the balance’: how will Paramount buying Warner Bros change Hollywood?

Warner Bros might have swept the Oscars with Sinners and One Battle After Another, but the impending merger has those in the industry worried about the future

On Sunday, Warner Bros snared 11 Oscars for One Battle After Another, Sinners and Weapons, equalling the record for most wins for a single film studio. Paramount, by contrast, did not earn a single nomination.

Yet in an apparent case of a minnow swallowing a whale, Paramount is poised to gobble up Warner Bros in a deal worth $111bn. If approved by regulators, the two studios would be consolidated into one, redrawing the Hollywood map and sowing uncertainty for actors, directors and writers as well as millions of viewers.

‘Everyone will tune in – she’s one of our own’: Jessie Buckley’s home town abuzz before Oscars

Excitement in Killarney will reach fever pitch on Sunday, when the actor is hotly tipped to become the first Irish woman to win best actress

If Jessie Buckley wins the Oscar for best actress on Sunday night, County Kerry will need no further proof of a cherished truism: to be born in this corner of Ireland really is the greatest gift that God can bestow. The award would be for Buckley’s performance in Hamnet, but for Killarney, her home town in the county nicknamed the Kingdom, credit will stretch back to her childhood, when she acted in local plays.

The rise of Jessie Buckley – from reality TV to Hamnet and Oscars history

Ahead of the Oscars on Sunday, Irish actress Jessie Buckley is the favourite to win best actress. Here's a look back at her rise to fame.

By Katie Spencer and Gemma Peplow, arts and entertainment team, in Los Angeles

In an unusually unpredictable Oscars race, there is only one moment experts agree is a dead cert – Jessie Buckley, on stage once again, to collect the award for best actress.

The big honours started with a Critics Choice award in January. A Golden Globe followed, then a BAFTA, and most recently, a statuette at the Actor Awards.

Buckley is the only acting nominee to take home all four this year, and she has picked up other smaller awards, too. The Oscar, it seems, is hers to lose.

Palmer Luckey says Silicon Valley has the Pentagon all wrong: ‘Stick to a position that this is in the hands of the people’

Who should control AI? Are the corporations that release the powerful technology the arbiters of its fate? Or should that power be vested in the hands of the government?

Palmer Luckey, the founder of defense company Anduril—which aims to modernize the U.S. military—thinks the answer is straightforward: Give the power to the government. In a recent interview with the New York Post, the billionaire founder weighed in on a burgeoning debate around who gets to determine how AI is used by the government.

For the billionaire, it’s up to the government, and therefore, the people, to make specific use decisions. Otherwise, tech companies could imperil democracy.

Bagel Hijikata: Will the scenario of their last meeting be repeated?

Alexander Bublik and Rinki Hijikata will meet in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters on March 9. It turned out to be a difficult start for Bublik – he had to recoup after missing the first game. In the upcoming match, he will play against Hijikata. Last spring, Alexander already lost a set to the Australian. How will their new face-to-face meeting turn out? – the bets for this match are in our betting tip

Bublik made an impressive comeback in the second round match of Indian Wells against Vitus Kopriva. The 28-year-old representative of Kazakhstan lost in the first set, won the second game in a tiebreak and completely suppressed the Czech's resistance in the decisive segment of the match (3-6, 7-6, 6-2). It should be noted that earlier in his career, Alexander had never reached the third round on the local courts.

Rinky Hijikata vs. Alexander Bublik: what Indian Wells previews reveal

As the 2026 BNP Paribas Open moves into second-round matchups at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, headlines have placed rinky hijikata on the opposite side of Alexander Bublik, while a detailed preview focuses on Bublik’s second-round meeting with Vit Kopriva. Set side by side, the two angles answer a narrow but useful question: what can be stated firmly from the available preview details, and what is only implied by rankings- and narrative-driven framing?

The most concrete information in the available context centers on Alexander Bublik meeting Vit Kopriva in the second round of the 2026 BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, USA. The preview text also lays out how the match can be followed in two markets: in the UK on Sky Sports Tennis and Sky Go, and in the USA on Tennis Channel.

How will Australia manage energy resources amid war?

Amid uncertainty over length of the war in the Middle East, experts are concerned about the impact on the world's oil and gas supplies.

Australia is not immune to those shocks and AM speaks to the Federal Resources Minister about how to protect Australians' energy supplies.

Rachel Mealey: Well, the ongoing attacks on Iran and the ever-expanding retaliatory attacks have had a major impact on the world's seaborne crude oil supply, sending energy prices soaring. For motorists in Australia, this means the price of fuel will keep climbing at the pump. Madeleine King is the Resources Minister. She joined me earlier. Minister, Australia's oil and gas supplies are going to be hit hard by this war. Exactly how much do we have in reserve?

The price of petrol in Canberra has jumped by nearly eight cents a litre in the past week, with some stations hitting the $2 mark following recent military strikes in the Middle East.

On February 26, before the Israeli-US attack on Iran, the average price for a litre of unleaded was $1.81, according to the NRMA. By March 5, the motoring organisation reported the average had climbed to $1.88.

Sydney motorists are paying up to 25 cents more for a litre of petrol now than they were before the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, as motoring groups accuse retailers of using the conflict as an excuse to gouge their customers.

After Jim Chalmers instructed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to keep an eye out for profiteering behaviour, a spokesperson for the watchdog said it had “observed average retail regular unleaded petrol prices in several cities moving higher over the last few days”.

Sporting CP claim 3-0 victory over Estoril behind Luis Suarez’s brilliant brace in Primeira Liga Matchday 2…

Sporting CP defeated Estoril 3-0 in Primeira Liga Matchday 24, with Luis Suarez playing a decisive role through a brilliant brace that guided the hosts to victory at Estadio Jose Alvalade. The forward opened the scoring and doubled the advantage, setting the tone early in a match controlled by Sporting CP from start to finish.

Sporting CP showed attacking efficiency and composure throughout the game, building their advantage through organized possession and constant pressure in the final third. Estoril attempted to respond, especially during key stretches of the match, but struggled to break through a disciplined defensive structure.

The victory was sealed late in the match when Daniel Braganca added a third goal, confirming Sporting CP’s dominance and securing three important points in the title race. With this result, Sporting CP continue applying pressure at the top of the Primeira Liga standings.

Sporting CP v Estoril: title push meets top-half surge

Sporting CP face Estoril in Liga Portugal at Estádio José Alvalade on Friday, 27 February 2026, with the hosts pressing the title race and the visitors seeking to strengthen their top-half position.

Sporting CP won 1-0 away in September and come in second with 58 points. Estoril sit seventh on 33 and have climbed the table in recent weeks, but recent head to heads have largely favoured the Lisbon side.

The Leões are unbeaten in their last five league games, including a 3-0 win at Moreirense. Estoril have three wins in five, capped by a 3-1 victory over Gil Vicente, though a 3-0 loss at AVS showed their vulnerability on the road.

Australians will receive mobile alert in July under new emergency trial

Kristy McBain says AusAlert will notify Australians during times of disaster. (ABC News: Callum Flynn)

A new national mobile alert system will begin trials this year, with the aim of delivering faster emergency warnings to Australians in times of disaster.

The government initially promised the national messaging system would be ready by the end of 2024, but it is now expected to be operational by October.

The system is designed for natural disasters such as bushfires and floods, but could be used for police operations and terrorist attacks.

Most Australians will receive a mobile phone alert in July this year, as part of a nationwide test of a new emergency warning system.

A blaring siren will sound at the same time on all of the 25 million mobile phones within service range around the country when a test alert is sent by the Commonwealth’s AusAlert emergency warning system in July.

The federal government will test its new AusAlert national warning system on July 27 at 2pm AEST, blaring out a 10-second alarm that is expected to replace the current patchwork of state-based emergency alerts by October.

AusAlert can be triggered on virtually all devices with a sim card within a designated area, from nationwide to street-by-street messages, and will be used to issue a wide range of warnings including natural disasters, threats to public safety – such as shooting incidents – as well as biosecurity and health threats like a disease outbreak.

Australians will soon receive intrusive alerts on their smartphones to warn of impending emergencies as governments overhaul warning systems for natural disasters and other serious events.

The $132m AusAlert system will be rolled out through a series of trials from June, replacing state-based text messaging systems which often struggle because of demand in major emergencies.

Alerts will be sent for bushfires, floods, biosecurity threats and public safety incidents like shootings. The messages will link users to more information from official sources online.

GWM’s V8 hybrid luxury off-roader will launch next month, according to reports.

There is no news yet on the Tank 800’s potential Australia future, but its impending China launch means it might not be too far away from Aussie shores.

It was previously thought the car would launch some time in 2026, but that time line now appears to have been moved up.

GWM's biggest SUV yet is a 5.3m-long luxury PHEV

GWM is launching its largest, most luxurious SUV yet in China under its premium Wey brand, but it's unclear if it'll come to Australia.

Australians and Americans may be addicted to big SUVs, but Chinese new-car buyers are becoming increasingly fond of them too.

There’s a whole segment of SUVs in China more than 5.2 metres long, almost all of which have a ‘9’ in their name. And now there’s another entrant coming, the Wey V9X.

Wey is GWM’s premium brand, which will launch in Australia this year – albeit treated as a sub-brand, like Haval and Tank.

After being teased by Wey, the V9X has now appeared in Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filings shared by CarNewsChina.
