Gonna be golden? Who will – and should – win the big awards at the 2026 Grammys

The top categories are stacked with quality, from Bad Bunny to Kendrick Lamar, Chappell Roan and K-pop hits – but here are the artists who most deserve to triumph

    Bad Bunny – DTMF
    Sabrina Carpenter – Manchild
    Doechii – Anxiety
    Billie Eilish – Wildflower
Kendrick Lamar & SZA – Luther
    Lady Gaga – Abracadabra
    Chappell Roan – The Subway
Rosé & Bruno Mars – APT.

The Grammys can certainly feel familiar: Sabrina Carpenter, Kendrick Lamar, Chappell Roan and Billie Eilish were all nominated in this category last year, plus there are appearances from Lady Gaga (who has 45 total nominations), Bruno Mars (36) and Bad Bunny (16). But the favouritism is justified in this strong field.

There’s a turf war going down at the Grammy Awards that hasn’t necessarily been as pronounced until now. As one anonymous voter — who’s in their second year as a member of the Recording Academy — puts it, it’s fueled by the inevitable evolution of how music is being discovered and consumed, which often takes the form of video crudité. “There are two sides,” the voter explains. “We’re looking at the ‘virality artists’ who are intentionally creating TikTok hits, making songs to go viral, and are very catchy with the algorithm and meant for that type of platform. The 15-second hooks, if you will.” The opposing side upholds a weightier industry standard, at least for this voter. “We have artists creating complex narratives, like Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish, who are doubling down on musicianship and legacy,” they say. “That’s the overall theme this year, and I strongly leaned in to the legacy side.”

Near record streak of dry January days in Seattle

SEATTLE — January is typically a soaker in western Washington, but lately, you’d be hard-pressed to find any rain at all.

Sunday marks the 13th day in a row with no measurable rain in our area.

RELATED | Cascade snowpack lagging at 50% of normal as unusual warm weather stretches on

And this is not something we want to see when we should be loading up our snowpack in the mountains and keeping the raingear handy in the lowlands.

Right now, we are on track to set a new record for consecutive January days with no rain.

The old record is 15 days in a row with no rain, set back in 1963.

You would have to go back to 1963 to find this kind of dry pattern in western Washington. That’s when Seattle set a record of 15 straight days in January without rain.

We are not quite there yet, but Friday is Day 11 with no measurable precipitation.

“We’ve just been under a pattern that’s really deflected any of these weather systems away from us,” Jacob DeFlitch, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Seattle, said.

The dry streak is expected to continue at least through the weekend. Forecast models show a possible weak system arriving Monday, but meteorologists say it is unlikely to bring much, if any, rainfall.

    Australia 204 for 2 (Malajczuk 102, Samuel 60*, Parmar 1-35) beat Japan 201 for 8 (Tani-Kelly 79*, Cooray 3-31, Byrom 2-32) by eight wickets

The first over of the 202 chase set the tone for what followed as Australia cruised past Japan at the Under-19 World Cup in Windhoek. Will Malajczuk smashed Nikhil Pol for 14 runs, and never looked back, racing to a 23-ball fifty and a 51-ball hundred as Australia chased down the target with eight wickets and nearly 20 overs to spare to seal a Super Sixes berth.

By the time Japan finally got rid of Malajczuk, he had thumped 102 off 55 balls, with 12 fours and five sixes. He brought up his half-century midway through the sixth over, by which point Australia were already 66 for 0, with Malajczuk contributing 57 of those runs off 26 balls. At the other end, his opening partner Nitesh Samuel scored 7 from ten deliveries.

How will Atlético Madrid line up against Alavés?

Two teams both in need of a win square off in the Spanish capital.

Atlético de Madrid host relegation-threatened Deportivo Alavés on Sunday afternoon in their first league fixture of the new year.

Atlético (11-5-3, 38 points) should be in good spirits after reaching the Copa del Rey quarterfinals with a win at Deportivo La Coruña last week. But they have work to do in LaLiga. Atleti begin round 20 in fourth place, looking up at Villarreal as well as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. A victory at the Metropolitano — where Atleti have won 22 of their past 28 league games — to begin the second half of the season would give the Rojiblancos vital breathing room relative to fifth-place Espanyol, which lost 2-0 to Girona on Friday.

Sydney, the nation’s economic engine room, has always had a beating heart: the CBD. But by 2036, one of the most noticeable shifts might not be the types of jobs, but where they are located, according to KPMG economist Terry Rawnsley.

Sydney high schools need to find room for 22,000 more students in the next decade. Where?

In 2016, the Herald forecast the inner-city student population would explode. This is what really happened – and what needs to happen next.

The world of schools and education loves a fad. In the past decade, it has seen plenty: from construction of architecturally impressive new schools with open-plan classrooms to project-based learning to boost “21st century” skills.

But the world of education is sobering up from the cascade of gurus, trends and shiny bright new things of recent years, says Catholic Schools NSW chief executive Dallas McInerney, who oversees almost 600 schools.

He says educators now recognise that it might appear old-fashioned to have students sitting in rows facing a teacher at the front of the room – but it is an incredibly effective way to learn.

The cause? The opening of Sydney’s south-west and west metro rail lines.

“That big transport infrastructure over the next 10 years is going to really reshape how Sydney functions as an economic entity,” Rawnsley says, predicting concentration of the labour market in a singular business district will be dispersed over several centres of economic activity.

Nick Kyrgios has conceded he is not up to playing singles at the Australian Open, ruling himself out of a likely wildcard.

The local crowd-puller was tipped to receive one of the three remaining wildcards from Tennis Australia.

But he announced on social media on Friday he would only play doubles with great mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park, with the tournament getting underway on January 18.

Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Kyrgios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking plummeting to 670.

Croft has been cast alongside Milo Manheim, who will play her love interest Flynn Rider.

There is no word yet on a release date for the movie.

Australian Teagan Croft has nabbed the lead role as Rapunzel in Disney's live-action Tangled alongside American actor Milo Manheim, who'll play Flynn Rider.

The original Rapunzel tells the story of a magically long-haired princess locked away in a tower. Her carefully ordered life is up-ended when she teams up with Flynn Rider, a charming outlaw on the run.

‘Tangled’: Kathryn Hahn in Talks to Play Villain Mother Gothel

The negotiations come on the heels of the studio finding the youthful leads of its live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated hit.

Kathryn Hahn, who earned an Emmy nomination playing the villainous Agatha Harkness in a pair of Marvel Studios TV shows, is going to the dark side once more.

The actress is in talks to play Mother Gothel, the magical would be step-mother, in Disney’s live-action take on Tangled.

The move comes after the studio chose rising Australian actress Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, star of Disney Channel’s musical Zombies franchise, to star. Croft will play Rapunzel, the curious and plucky would-be princess with magical hair, and Manheim stars as Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who helps her escape her tower.

Australian Open boss Craig Tiley has backed Nick Kyrgios’ decision not to play singles at this year’s event, revealing he had not given the Wimbledon finalist any guarantee of a wildcard.

Kyrgios, who turns 31 in April, announced on Friday that he instead wanted a singles wildcard to go to a player more prepared for the rigours of grand slam tennis. However, he plans to contest doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who he combined with to win the 2022 Australian Open title.

Beleaguered actor drops out of film to focus on mental health

Actor David Harbour, who recently concluded his role as Jim Hopper on the Netflix hit “Stranger Things,” left the production of the upcoming film “Behemoth,” reportedly to concentrate on his mental health.

Deuxmoi reports Harbour had a “challenging moment” while working on the film, which also stars Olivia Wilde and Pedro Pascal. It led to his decision to leave the film.

Variety reports a representative for Searchlight Pictures confirmed Harbour had left “Behemoth.”

Last year was a challenge for the 50-year-old Harbour. Despite the success of “Stranger Things,” which had its series finale last week after five seasons, he was accused by co-star Millie Bobby Brown of harassment and bullying.
