Victoria Mboko has a simple plan for quietening the vocal home crowd support expected for her Australian Open round one rival Emerson Jones – start winning.

The Canadian teen is the talk of the town after a stunning surge up the rankings, starting last year outside the top 300 and soaring to world No.16.

The rise seemed to have even surprised Mboko, who set herself a goal 12 months ago of being able to play in qualifying for the majors.

Perth Glory Women's coach Stephen Peters has criticised a lack of investment in the women's A-League, calling for more funds.

In recent years, the Glory's women's side has been Perth's saving grace, as the men's team suffered back-to-back wooden-spoon finishes.

A new report has found the women's A-League is losing ground to global leagues and rival domestic sports despite strong international interest.

Perth Glory Women's coach Stephen Peters has criticised a lack of investment in the women's A-League, which he says has not reaped the benefits of the Matildas' success at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Women’s football in Australia reaches Rubicon moment with future vision revealed | Joey Lynch

The PFA’s new strategy ‘is not doom and gloom’, rather it hopes to serve as a springboard for investment and offer an opportunity to grow the game

In 2015, Elise Kellond-Knight was part of the Matildas squad that took history-making strike action, paving the way for a decade of increased investment that saw the team rise to prominence and Australia secure hosting rights for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and this year’s Women’s Asian Cup. Now, with that continental showpiece less than two months away, the retired midfielder sees the women’s game in Australia at another Rubicon moment, one requiring bold investment in the future of a fully professional A-League Women.

    ▪ Longwood is now one of just 11 teams in Division I women's basketball to use the same starting lineup in all of its games so far this season. The others are: Cornell, Eastern Michigan, Fort Wayne, La Salle, North Dakota State, Northwestern State, Oklahoma, Rice, UC Davis and Youngstown State. Of that group, only Cornell (5-8) is below .500.

Elina Svitolina Leads Ukrainian Women’s Tennis In 2026 WTA Rankings

In the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, Svitolina rose to 13th place (+1).

Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremska retained their positions in the WTA top 30, ranking 26th and 27th, respectively.

The fourth-ranked Ukrainian player remains Oleksandra Oliynikova, who again set a personal record by moving up to 90th in the world rankings (+6).

Yuliya Starodubtseva improved her ranking to 111th (+2) and Darya Snigur to 149th (+4). Meanwhile, Angelina Kalinina, having failed to defend her points from last year’s Brisbane semifinal, dropped sharply to 174th (-47).

Eighteen-year-old Veronika Podrez set a personal best by rising to 284th (+4).

WTA Brisbane Day 2 Predictions Including Karolina Pliskova vs Hailey Baptiste

10 intriguing first-round matches are scheduled on day two at the WTA Brisbane International. As always, we here at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, including Marketa Vondrousova vs Magdalena Frech, but who will advance in Brisbane?

Anna Bondar came through a tough qualifying draw and will arrive at this match with confidence. This is her debut in Brisbane, but her solid baseline game can cause some problems for Cristina Bucsa, who enters 2026 at her career-high ranking after a strong run of results at the back-end of 2025. Rust should not be a factor for Bucsa who should have enough to get past Bondar.

After three low scores, three tosses lost and three heavy defeats, Sri Lanka gave hosts India more of a fight in the fourth T20I on Sunday when they finally got to chase a target instead of setting one. They got somewhat close thanks to contribution from batters apart from Chamari Athapaththu. With their confidence running a little higher, they would want to sign off from this five-match tour with one win as the preparations for the T20 World Cup, which is less than six months away, heat up.
