The most widespread May rain in a decade is about to sweep across Australia as the first north-west cloudband of 2026 becomes a reality.
Between Saturday and Tuesday, rain will extend across more than half the country, covering a broad swathe from the Kimberley, through the Northern Territory and southern Queensland, down to south-east states.
The timing is ideal for farmers as the system could deliver the best rain in months to some areas in drought.
The cloudband has been slowly brewing all week as tropical moisture was gradually drawn into the interior — evident on satellite images which showed fragmented areas of cloud over the outback.
Not all sunshine in Brisbane for Magic Round weekend
Hopes for a dry weekend in Brisbane for the NRL’s blockbuster Magic Round have been dashed, with showers expected to continue across south-east Queensland following a week of persistent rain.
Brisbane awoke to grey skies and cool temperatures on Friday, though there were bursts of sunshine throughout the inner-city as the morning progressed.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Christie Johnson said locals and visitors could expect similar conditions and showers over coming days thanks to a high-pressure system in the Tasman Sea directing south-easterly winds over SEQ.
“That will increase the risk of some showers over south-east Queensland,” Johnson said.
