Reclaim Your Wrapped: You Can Now Control Whether Kids and Family Music Shapes Your Recommendations

Parents love using Spotify to play music for their families. But parents don’t always share the same taste as their young children—and playing music for your kids shouldn’t have to affect your own recommendations. (If your Wrapped is full of the singing princesses you played for the family, you know what we’re talking about.)

Starting today, we’re rolling out a new toggle in your settings that lets you exclude kids and family music from your taste profile, so those streams no longer shape your recommendations. This includes, for example, the songs you play on repeat from your kids’ favorite animated movies, theme songs from family TV shows, nursery rhymes, and more.

Bye-Bye, ‘Baby Shark’: Spotify Lets Parents Keep Kids’ Music From Taking Over Year-End ‘Wrapped’ Recap

The platform has a new setting that won't let family listening sessions influence an account's insights or personalized recommendations.

If your Spotify Wrapped has been riddled with the Kidz Bop Kids and “Baby Shark,” Spotify has the solution.

Announced Tuesday (Sept. 15), the streaming service is rolling out a setting that allows parents and guardians to prevent music aimed at kids and families from influencing their personal taste profile. This means that those hours of animated-movie soundtracks, nursery rhymes and children’s TV theme songs can finally stop skewing their Spotify experience.

The new option is seemingly very useful for parents who use their personal Spotify account to entertain the whole family. Maybe you’ve spent the past year listening to the same children’s movie soundtrack on every road trip, or your kid has demanded a particular song approximately 700 times. Spotify can now distinguish between the music you’re playing because your child loves it and the music you actually want to hear yourself.

Spotify Can Now Exclude Your Kids' Music Taste From Recommendations

The end of Disney songs popping up in your Daily Mix.

Just because you have to listen to "Let It Go" for the zillionth time while driving your kids to school doesn't mean it should dominate your Spotify Wrapped. The streaming service is adding a new toggle option for users to exclude certain kids or family songs from affecting your music recommendations, like nursery rhymes, TV show theme songs or musical hits from animated movies.

Within the settings panel, there's now a new toggle labeled "Include kids and family music in taste profile" that will change what shows up in your Discovery Weekly, Daily Mix or Wrapped. Like the Explicit content switch, Spotify has a note that says it could "take up to 48 hours for these changes to be reflected in your personalized recommendations." However, activating the kid and family music toggle will also work retroactively, meaning that all the relevant music you listened to this year can still be wiped away from your annual Wrapped recap. The feature is available to both Free and Premium users.
