Port consider Butters power play, Hawks snare Zach Merrett and Marshall boycotts awards night
Zak Butters’ impending move to the Western Bulldogs could evolve into this year’s “mega deal” if Port Adelaide decide to match the free agency offer for their outgoing superstar midfielder.
As the AFL’s trade period started on Monday, Bulldogs player acquisition and strategy manager Michael Regan said that a multi-club deal was among the options to try to appease the Power’s demands for Butters, a triple All-Australian.
Another scenario if Port Adelaide were dissatisfied with negotiations after potentially matching the Dogs’ nine-year, $18 million offer for Butters is to send him to the pre-season draft, where Richmond could grab him for free, although Power list boss Jason Cripps hoped to avoid that.

Port Adelaide list boss wants his club to be properly compensated for Zak Butters and is leveraging Richmond's ongoing interest
PORT Adelaide is yet to decide whether it will accept a compensation pick for Zak Butters or match the Western Bulldogs' free agency offer and force a blockbuster trade for the superstar midfielder.
And the Power aren't afraid to keep Richmond as a fallback option if the Bulldogs can't stump up.
All eyes were on the Butters deal as the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period opened on Monday, while Hawthorn has agreed a trade for Essendon star Zach Merrett but is working with Gold Coast on the free agency move for spearhead Ben King.
