Eva Marie Saint, one of the last survivors of Hollywood’s golden age of the 1940s and 50s, has died aged 102. Her screen work spanned six decades: Saint made her screen debut opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s celebrated thriller North by Northwest, and in one of her last screen appearances played Superman’s adoptive mother Martha Kent in the 2006 superhero film Superman Returns.

A family spokesman said on Tuesday that Saint had died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles.

A family spokesman said that Saint had died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT).

The star was one of the last survivors of Hollywood’s golden age of the 1940s and ’50s, and before her death was the earliest surviving and oldest living Academy Award winner.

She is best known for starring opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, a film that earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955, and in Alfred Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest.

While she made her name in the ’50s, Saint’s career spanned both film and television for six decades.

Eva Marie Saint has died age 102: the last star of Hollywood’s Golden Age

Eva Marie Saint, who has died aged 102, was showered in awards across her long career. Her performances spanned from her first stage appearances in 1942 to her final film appearance in 2019.

But while she was the last star of Hollywood’s Golden Age, it was television’s Golden Age where she began her long career. It was television and then even newer formats like podcasting that sustained it.

Saint was celebrated as a film star, including her landmark performances for Hollywood’s best directors including Elia Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and John Frankenheimer.
