Donald Trump says the Pentagon's plans to live stream a firing squad execution will not go ahead.

Nidal Hasan is set to be executed on December 3 for a deadly mass shooting in 2009 that killed 13 soldiers.

Plans to live stream the execution prompted outrage in the US and beyond, including in Australia.

US President Donald Trump says the execution of former US army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan by firing squad will not be live streamed.

The decision came after intense backlash to the announcement that the execution would be shown online.

Soldier who killed 13 people in 2009 will still be executed, but president said ‘people would rather not watch him die’

Donald Trump has shelved a widely condemned plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people at a military base at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009.

In a social media post on Thursday, Trump argued that broadcasting such an execution “might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan” but said that “many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device”.

In newly independent US, Americans debated whether public executions taught a lesson or just showed off the state’s power to destroy

The proposed livestream of Nidal Hasan’s execution by a U.S. military firing squad gave an old question a new audience. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist convicted by a military court of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, is scheduled to be executed on Dec. 3, 2026.

Explaining the plan to make his death public, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that “people need to understand … there’s serious consequences for these types of things.”

But on Oct. 15, 2026, President Donald Trump announced in a social media post that Hasan’s execution would not be livestreamed, after the plan drew widespread public objections from both Republicans and Democrats.
