Carey to lead Hurricanes' WBBL title defence
Australia white-ball star takes the reins from retired title-winning skipper Elyse Villani
Australia international Nicola Carey will lead the Hobart Hurricanes in their title defence for WBBL|12.
Carey, who is the club's most-capped women's player, has been unveiled as Elyse Villani's replacement following the fairytale finish to her Big Bash career.
A Hurricanes stalwart, Carey has played 88 WBBL games with Hobart since making the move from Sydney Thunder in 2019.
The 33-year-old hit the winning runs against Perth Scorchers to secure the team a historic maiden WBBL title last year.
She's now hoping to lead her side to consecutive Big Bash titles, a feat never before achieved by the club in either the men's or women's competition.

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu will join the Hobart Hurricanes for this season’s Women’s Big Bash League, replacing injured England international Danni Wyatt-Hodge in the defending champions’ squad.
The club has also signed emerging wicketkeeper-batter Kate Pelle, days before the Hurricanes open their season against the Melbourne Stars on Thursday.
Athapaththu, 36, is ranked sixth in the ICC Women’s T20I batting rankings and has played 69 WBBL matches across the past seven seasons with the Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder.
In WBBL|09, she was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 552 runs at an average of 42.46 for the Thunder. She also took nine wickets that season.
