Interview: Robert Pattinson on the cost of success and losing yourself in the pursuit of being a hero in Primetime

When does ambition become obsession, and at what point does the pursuit of success begin to fundamentally alter who we are? In A24’s psychological crime thriller Primetime, Robert Pattinson portrays television journalist Chris Hansen, whose involvement in NBC’s controversial To Catch a Predator series transformed him into an unlikely cultural phenomenon. Set against the sensationalised media landscape of 2006, the film explores the increasingly blurred boundaries between journalism, entertainment and public humiliation, as the pursuit of justice becomes inseparable from the demands of television ratings.

For Pattinson, however, Hansen’s story isn’t necessarily one of calculated ambition or moral corruption, but something altogether more vulnerable: a man whose desire to succeed and be considered a hero gradually forces him to become someone he never intended to be. Speaking with our Peter Gray for the second time this year in a one-on-one conversation, the actor reflected on the complicated relationship between performance and identity, the unexpected consequences of success, and why the desperate need to remain relevant can ultimately become its own form of imprisonment.

Chris Hansen challenges Robert Pattinson to meet after branding new movie Primetime an ‘insult’

The real-life host of To Catch a Predator has challenged Robert Pattinson to meet him after taking issue with the upcoming film Primetime

Chris Hansen has thrown down the gauntlet to Robert Pattinson to have a face-to-face chat after the British star recently played him in the movie Primetime.

Primetime, which releases in the UK later this month, sees the 40-year-old take on the role of the To Catch a Predator host.

The controversial reality show, which ran between 2004 and 2007, saw Hansen confronting alleged paedophiles who had been caught in sting operations set up by the show.

However, Hansen has been critical of the movie calling it an ‘insult’ to The Hollywood Reporter and a ‘completely made work of fiction’.

Chris Hansen Asks Robert Pattinson to Have a Seat for ‘Primetime’ Interview

“I know he’s a busy guy. I know I’m a busy guy,” the journalist says before offering to fly to London

The internet may have moved on from Lance Oppenheim’s “Primetime” to his hit documentary “You Can See Everything,” but Chris Hansen still wants to have some words about the movie inspired by his work.

The former “To Catch a Predator” host took to social media on Wednesday to invite Robert Pattinson, who portrays Hansen in “Primetime,” onto his podcast for an interview discussion.

Hansen adopted both the verbiage he used when speaking to child predators and the title of his podcast, asking Pattinson to “have a seat” on his show.
