Collin Sexton complimented Jarred Vanderbilt’s professionalism, leadership
The veteran forward helped key a win for the undermanned Lakers on Wednesday
Across the first four games of the regular season, Jarred Vanderbilt found himself entirely outside of the Los Angeles Lakers’ rotation, with head coach JJ Redick opting for Sandro Mamukelashvili and Kevon Looney as his backup big men behind Walker Kessler. But Looney struggled mightily in those appearances. His insufficient scoring and passing were stunting the offense while his lack of size and declining mobility rendered him an issue defensively.
So, Redick gave Looney’s rotation spot to Vanderbilt against the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday night and the veteran forward, in his first minutes of the season, delivered. His motor, range and quickness defensively caused problems and the Lakers outscored the Clippers by 22 points during his 21 minutes. In particular, Redick cited Vanderbilt’s ability to front the post against Brook Lopez as a crucial contribution.
Lakers’ Little-Used Big Man Seeking ‘Physicality’
If there is one thing Los Angeles Lakers fans were not sure they would see this season–despite repeated calls for it among the team’s faithful–it was the addition of Jarred Vanderbilt to the team’s rotation. For the past four months, the only time Vanderbilt was really discussed by the team was in trade talks with other teams, and those tended to end in frustration. With two years and $26 million on his contract, there was never much appetite around the NBA to trade for Vanderbilt, who is offensively challenged and who also happened to open the season deep in coach JJ Redick’s doghouse.
