A Times review of the president’s public speeches finds that he is more profane, more absolutist, longer-winded and less coherent than he was in 2016.
Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, and Dylan Freedman, the A.I. projects editor for The Times, conducted a review they previously produced in 2024.
As he opened his speech at a recent campaign rally in Greenville, N.C., President Trump told the story of the Willie Horton crime case that helped sink the presidential campaign of the Democrat Michael S. Dukakis in 1988.

The weird occurrence comes amid swirling questions about the president’s mental acuity.
Jake Tapper has exposed President Donald Trump for telling the same story twice just minutes apart at a rally.
On Monday’s edition of The Lead, Tapper zeroed in on a Sunday New York Times report by Peter Baker and Dylan Freedman, who wrote that Trump has become “more profane, more absolutist, longer-winded, and less coherent than he was in 2016.”
Freedman joined Tapper to discuss an Oct. 20 rally in Greenville, North Carolina, where Trump told the same tale twice in less than half an hour.
“It was the story of Willie Horton and an infamous ad from the 1988 presidential election,” Tapper explained. “It started about one minute into the speech.”

Jake Tapper leaned into a New York Times study to make a point about the president’s speaking habits.
CNN on Monday broke down a clip of President Donald Trump telling the same story twice in a speech.
After showing snippets of Trump’s 23-minute ramble about the Reflecting Pool, CNN host Jake Tapper noted a New York Times study that found a marked increase in the president’s long-winded “head-scratching moments” that feature more profanity and less coherence.
Tapper pointed to a “striking example” from The Times about the president repeating the same story within 30 minutes at a recent midterm rally.
