After their 106-run partnership ended when Stokes (83) was knocked over by a peach from Mitchell Starc, Archer ran almost all the way to the boundary rope to give his frustrated skipper a pat on the back to acknowledge a job well done.
The pair showed the sort of guts and determination England have been lacking so far in the series with their stand helping reduce Australia’s first innings lead to 85 when it appeared as if the Test could effectively be over on the second evening.
