NEWARK, N.J. — Jack Hughes returned to the New Jersey Devils' lineup just more than five weeks after having finger surgery and scored the home team's only goal against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.
Hughes received a loud ovation when he skated out for warmups, then scored his 11th goal of the season at 8:51 of the first period. That gave the Devils a 1-0 lead and brought more sustained cheers as Hughes raced in celebration to center ice where he was mobbed by teammates.
Devils’ Luke Hughes may have spilled details on Jack Hughes’ timeline
On Tuesday, Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said that, while injured star Jack Hughes is making progress, he’s still “not close to joining the group.”
During an interview on the TNT pregame show ahead of the Devils’ matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights, Luke said Jack “should be back pretty soon” when asked to give an update on his older brother.
This lines up with a Tuesday report from TSN that said “Jack Hughes is not that far behind, he’s likely going to return earlier than expected.”
On Monday, a Devils fan page posted on X (formerly Twitter) an image of Hughes skating with a stick on the Prudential Center ice. A team source confirmed to NJ Advance Media that Hughes is, in fact, back to skating with a stick — which is a very positive sign considering his injury.
