Zambia’s Patson Daka scored with a spectacular diving header in stoppage time as his side came from behind to force a 1-1 draw with Mali in their opening Group A match at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mali looked in control for most of the encounter but paid the price for sitting back in the closing stages as Zambia staged a late recovery, Daka leaping through the air to force home Mathews Banda’s curling cross two minutes into injury time at the end of the game.

Leicester City forward Patson Daka scored a stoppage-time equaliser for Zambia as they opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-1 draw against Mali.

The 27-year-old was making his 54th senior appearance for the Copper Bullets and scored his 22nd international goal with a header in the 92nd minute in Casablanca.

Daka was on the end of a Mathews Banda cross to secure a point and they are third in their group after hosts Morocco beat Comoros 2-0 in the tournament's curtain-raiser on Sunday.

Zambia, who won the tournament in 2012, are next in action on Friday when they meet Comoros.

Live! Mali vs Zambia at the AFCON 2025 on beIN SPORTS

Mali and Zambia will face off at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 for just the second time in tournament history when they open their Group A campaign on Monday at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

This highly anticipated AFCON 2025 matchup revives a rivalry that has lain dormant on the continental stage for more than three decades.

The only prior AFCON finals meeting between Mali and Zambia came in the 1994 semi-finals, played on 6 April 1994 in Tunis. On that occasion, Zambia delivered a dominant 4–0 victory, with goals from Elihah Litana, Zeddy Saileti, Kalusha Bwalya, and Kenneth Malitoli.

That defeat remains Mali’s joint-heaviest loss in AFCON history, alongside their 4–0 loss to Morocco in 2004. For Zambia, the result still stands as one of their biggest wins at the AFCON finals.
