Blinkers On is a weekly column covering the biggest issues of the spring racing carnival.

Racing Victoria needs to be transparent this week as it digs into the reasons behind the death of horse Ohope Wins following Saturday’s $6 million Caulfield Cup.

Now more than ever, the public deserves a proper and thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the tragic mid-race tumble that resulted in Chris Waller’s talented mare being put down and two jockey’s lives being put at risk.

At stake is the sport’s social licence, especially in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup.

‘Unable to be saved’: Heartbreak after ‘horrific’ fall as tears in emotional upset

Kingswood has produced a massive upset in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup in a race marred by drama after an ugly fall that saw one horse put down.

It came after last year’s Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double winner Half Yours fell in the home straight.

Thankfully, Half Yours is OK and led back to the stalls after his fall. His jockey Mark Zahra was taken to hospital with a sternum injury but according to the stewards, Zahra is “conscious and alert”.

Unfortunately, another horse Ohope Wins fell when trying to avoid the fallen Half Yours and Racing Victoria confirmed in a statement the mare was humanely euthanised by the on-course veterinarian.

Trainer’s tribute to ‘brave, kind’ horse after Caulfield Cup tragedy

Champion trainer Chris Waller has paid tribute to Ohope Wins as a “brave” and “kind” horse after a fatal fall during Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.

The four-year-old was euthanised following the incident, which also saw 2025 Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours go down in the race.

A statement was posted via Waller’s social media channels on Saturday night after the New Zealand-bred mare was put down by veterinarians.

“Our wonderful Ohope Wins was sadly brought down in today’s Caulfield Cup, and despite all efforts from the on-course veterinarians, could not be saved.

“Ohope Wins was a true star of the turf, but to the people who looked after her everyday, she was so much more. She was brave. She was kind. She was full of character. But more importantly, she was loved.
