Is Ali G racist?
A new Ali G film is out, and the old argument is back. Campaigners are pressing cinemas to pull Ali G: Who Iz I?, calling the character a racist caricature. Defenders say the joke was never targeted at the people it appears to mock.
Both sides assume the character must be one thing or another. That assumption is overly simplistic.
Media scholar Simon Weaver offers a better description: Ali G is an example of what he calls “liquid racism”, using humour that can be read several ways at once, so it slips away whenever someone tries to pin it down.

Ali G: Who Iz I? review – Sacha Baron Cohen’s high-stakes satire punches up and down with spectacular bad taste
Baron Cohenâs live-ammo prankster is back, 20 years on, but has to battle with his own irrelevance in search of big laughs and the approval of a new generation
Exclusive: Republican leader embarrassed by film says he plans to sue Sacha Baron Cohen: âA liar and a pervertâ
If you liked Sacha Baron Cohenâs Ali G the first time around, youâll like this less; if you disliked it, youâll dislike this more; if you suspected it was racist, youâll be more emboldened to say so â especially as Baron Cohen is using one specific character apparently to pre-empt and mock precisely that objection. Broad and crass as it often is â in fact always is â this Ali G sequel is sometimes funny: the athletic vigour of our heroâs pranking and punking is like the umpteenth Jackass film at which you might find yourself laughing, and Baron Cohen blunders with the semi-intentional force of an XL bully into the issue of whether jokes are still allowed.
