Telstra customers have reported their SMS inboxes flooded with messages about missed calls from contacts which had not attempted to call them.

It comes as the DownDetector website shows a spike in reported issues with the telecommunications operator today.

In a statement to the ABC, a Telstra spokesperson said the company was aware of the situation and it had since been resolved.

The spokesperson attributed it to an issue with Telstra's MessageBank service and apologised for customer confusion.
