Here are the five big takeaways from Wednesday's Fed rate decision

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday approved a much-anticipated quarter percentage point interest rate cut at a meeting that was packed with intrigue and surprises. Here's a look at five top takeaways:

"Given the lack of consensus on the Committee displayed today, along with the slow release of traditional economic data, and the arrival of a new Fed Chair early in 2026, we think the Fed is likely to remain on hold for a while. Still, continued softness in some of the labor indicators can certainly bring another 25 bps cut into the mix for January." — Rick Rieder, head of fixed income at BlackRock and a reported finalist to succeed Powell

Cantankerous and increasingly cautious consumers — perhaps put on edge by seemingly shrinking paychecks, a weaker job market and stubbornly high prices — gave the Federal Reserve more room to cut interest rates for a third time in 2025.

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the nation's central bank cut short-term interest rates by a quarter percentage point. The Fed's December rate cut drove the short-term federal funds rate to a target range of 3.5% to 3.75%.

The Fed noted in its statement that "job gains have slowed this year, and the unemployment rate has edged up through September. More recent indicators are consistent with these developments."

The decision was not unanimous. "Voting against this action were Stephen I. Miran, who preferred to lower the target range for the federal funds rate by 1/2 percentage point at this meeting; and Austan D. Goolsbee and Jeffrey R. Schmid, who preferred no change to the target range for the federal funds rate at this meeting," according to the Fed's statement.

‘Be careful what you wish for’: Top economist warns any additional interest rate cuts after today would signal the economy is slipping into danger

Claudia Sahm thinks investors should rethink what they’re salivating for.

The Federal Reserve is likely to deliver its third interest rate cut of the year on Wednesday, a move widely understood to be insurance against the bottom completely falling out of the labor market. But to Sahm—a former Fed economist, recession-indicator architect, and one of the central bank’s most closely watched outside interpreters—the more consequential question isn’t what the Fed does on Wednesday. It’s what additional cuts would mean.

“If the [Jerome] Powell Fed ends up doing a lot more cuts,” she told Fortune ahead of the decision, “then we probably don’t have a good economy. Be careful what you wish for.”

Supergirl Poster: James Gunn Readies Fans for DCU Movie’s Trailer

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Supergirl will be released in United States theaters and IMAX next summer. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the movie will see Milly Alcock reprise her role as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. The character briefly appeared at the end of 2025’s Superman, which was directed by James Gunn.

On Twitter, Gunn has shared a new poster for Supergirl, which comes with the tagline, “Truth. Justice. Whatever.” The poster is being unveiled ahead of the forthcoming Supergirl, which will be released this week.

Supergirl is an adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow miniseries. The solicitation for the series’ first issue reads, “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”

Utrecht vs Nottingham Forest live: Score and latest updates from Europa League

Murillo goes on a jinking run through midfield and just keeps going until the he reaches the edge of the box but his final through-ball goes straight out for a goal-kick.

After a minute of added time, the first half comes to an end and it’s goalless at the break.

McAtee is found in a pocket of space in the right of the area and he looks to lay a ball into the path of Kalimuendo at the back post but it’s cut out with some excellent defending by the hosts.

The first half of this opening period was dominated by Forest, with it seeming only a matter of time before they found the opener.

'Forest's travelling squad is strong' – Fray

Forest fans in Utrecht were few and far between last night, but as thousands make the journey today – either from the UK or making the short hop from Amsterdam – they'll be buoyed by the strength of the travelling Reds' squad.

Though goalkeeper Matz Sels has been left at home with a tight groin, and Ryan Yates has been added to the injury list with a hamstring problem, Forest's 22 in the Netherlands includes fit-again Murillo, Dilane Bakwa, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Apart from those ineligible for the Europa League, the rest of the senior players are all here, and in contrast to recent previous matches in the competition, the only two inexperienced players here are substitute goalkeepers Keehan Willows and Aaron Bott.

Hours before the biggest start of his life against Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic, Derik Queen took a seat in a row of chairs between the New Orleans Pelicans' two practice courts following a recent morning shootaround.

The 20-year-old center acts his age and has a kid-like joy. He has a smile filled with braces and an endearing cartoonish laugh that not even the Pelicans' sinking season has spoiled.

"That's exactly what he is — a kid," DeAndre Jordan, who won a title with Jokic in 2023 and is now mentoring Queen in New Orleans, told ESPN. "He still got a little baby fat."

Rookie Derik Queen's emergence a bright spot for Pelicans

Rookie Derik Queen has delivered for the New Orleans Pelicans in their otherwise difficult start to this season.

Derik Queen becomes the 5th rookie to notch a 30-point triple-double (33 pts, 10 reb, 10 ast) before his 21st birthday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When Pelicans rookie Derik Queen missed a late shot for the lead against the San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans guard Jose Alvarado hustled over to him and pushed his palm up under his chin in an expression of encouragement.

The Pelicans felt Queen had nothing to be ashamed of after recording his first NBA triple double — 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists — in just his 25th game.

Spurs Notes: Harper, Fox, Castle, Wembanyama

No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper helped lead the Spurs to a victory over New Orleans on Monday with a 22-point, six-assist outing, proving that he can be successful in his role even when De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle are both available. Still, as Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News (subscription required) writes, it was evident with all three of those guards were healthy and active for the first time this season that there are still some kinks to work out in the backcourt.

While Harper thrived, Castle showed some rust in his first game back from a hip injury, making just 5-of-15 shots and turning the ball over three times in 23 minutes. Meanwhile, McDonald suggests that Fox seemed “unsure of when to assert himself” — the former All-Star scored just 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting and committed four turnovers.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart was cleared to practice Tuesday after being sidelined with a back issue for the past two weeks, giving L.A. a defensive boost heading into Wednesday's NBA Cup quarterfinals matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.

"Back's feeling good," Smart said. "Felt good in practice today. So we did some tests, passed the tests. We're going to give it a shot tomorrow. See how it feels."

Smart, 31, missed the Lakers' last six games with what the team termed a left lumbar muscle strain.

Lakers Announce Major Marcus Smart Injury Update Ahead of NBA Cup Quarterfinals

The Los Angeles Lakers have received a major injury update on three-time All-Defensive Team guard Marcus Smart, a key offseason signing who has been out for the last six contests with a back lingering.

The 31-year-old has been available for 14 contests with the 17-6 Lakers so far, during his inaugural season with the franchise. When the Oklahoma State product has suited up, he's been an effective defensive presence.

Former Celtics guard nearing return with new team

The Lakers could be getting a boost to their lineup for the NBA Cup on Wednesday night with Marcus Smart approaching a return. The former Celtics guard has missed the past six games due to a back injury, including a game in Boston on Friday night.

“Over the last couple days, he’s [gotten] closer,” JJ Redick told reporters earlier this week. “We were hoping he’s back Wednesday, but still day-to-day.”

The Lakers fell to the Celtics 126-105 at TD Garden without Smart, Luka Doncic and LeBron James in the lineup. Before the setback, Redick spoke about the impact that Smart has been making both on the floor and on the bench this year.
