How World Cup expansion is driving Asia’s naturalisation arms race

As Asia’s allocation has now doubled, many nations look to foreign-born talent to push them towards qualification

When the United Arab Emirates line up against Iraq on Thursday for the fifth and final round of Asian qualification for next year’s World Cup, it is likely that over half of the home starting XI in Abu Dhabi will be foreign-born. The UAE are, however, merely another participant in a naturalisation arms race in the continent that has been boosted by the expansion of the World Cup from 32 teams to 48.

Asia’s allocation has doubled from four automatic spots in Qatar to eight in North America, opening up the tournament to a new array of contenders desperate to play on the greatest stage of all. Japan, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Australia have historically dominated World Cup qualifying, with North Korea the most recent outlier in 2010. Those six are the only teams from the Asian Football Confederation to make more than one appearance at the tournament.

Michael Burry of 'Big Short' fame deregisters Scion Asset Management

"Big Short" investor Michael Burry, known for his successful bets against the U.S. housing market in 2008, has deregistered his hedge fund, Scion Asset Management.

The Securities and Exchange Commission's database showed Scion's registration status as "terminated" as of November 10. Deregistering would imply the fund is not required to file reports with the regulator or any state.

Bets by Scion, which managed $155 million in assets as of March, have long been dissected for hints of looming bubbles and signs of market froth.

In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Burry said, "On to much better things Nov 25th." Scion Asset Management did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Where to stay in Prague – a guide to the best areas and neighbourhoods

With its “1000 spires” and unique blend of fairytale Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture — mixed in with a sprinkle of contrasting Communist landmarks — Prague remains one of Europe’s best-looking and most captivating capitals. At the city’s heart lie the historic districts of Stare Mesto (Old Town) and Mala Strana (Lesser Town), which are linked by the iconic Charles Bridge and home to big-hitter sights such as Prague Castle and Old Town Square.

These districts, along with Nove Mesto (New Town) — a more bustling district, home to Wenceslas Square and the National Museum — are great bases for some of the other neighbourhoods that lie just beyond the centre These include Vinohrady and Zizkov, which offer leafy streets, a vibrant cafe and bar culture, and a more local feel. Other districts such as Karlin, Holesovice, and Smichov have also undergone something of a renaissance, and are equally abuzz with chic restaurants, edgy galleries and dapper wine bars.

Wizz A321XLR's descent rate increased just before hard landing and tail-strike

Czech investigators have disclosed that a Wizz Air UK Airbus A321XLR’s descent rate increased by 60% in the last few seconds before a hard touchdown and tail-strike at Prague.

It had been conducting an ILS approach to runway 24 following a service from London Gatwick on 11 September.

Weather conditions at the time were “normal”, says Czech investigation authority UZPLN, with good visibility – although the 10kt wind was variable, from 150-220°.

It states that the first officer, with 450h on A320-family aircraft, was the flying pilot, for the third time, while the flight was the captain’s first in command on the A321 model.

Luxury Real Estate in Vienna: What Drives the Market

According to the current market report by Engel & Völkers, the Vienna market is remarkably stable. While the residential real estate market is cooling overall, the premium segment is even recording increasing transaction numbers. Price levels in prime locations remain high, especially in the first district, where according to Engel & Völkers, square meter prices between 25,000 and 30,000 euros are no longer uncommon (Engel & Völkers Price Analysis).

Luxury is also in high demand outside the center. In districts like Döbling, Hietzing, or Währing, prices for villas and exclusive apartments are sometimes in the double-digit million range. Properties with high-quality furnishings, a lot of privacy, and good connections are particularly sought after – but not necessarily in immediate city center locations.

Luxury Real Estate in Vienna: Key Market Drivers

Vienna has solidified its position as one of Europe’s most coveted residential locations, particularly in the luxury real estate sector. The demand for exquisite properties, such as elegantly designed penthouses and historic apartments, remains robust, even amid economic uncertainties.

According to a recent report by Engel & Völkers, Vienna’s luxury real estate market has demonstrated remarkable stability. While the overall residential property market shows signs of cooling, premium properties are experiencing an increase in sales transactions. Notably, prices in prime locations such as the first district continue to soar, with square meter rates ranging between €25,000 and €30,000.

Luxury demand extends beyond the city center. In districts like Döbling, Hietzing, and Währing, villa prices frequently reach multi-million-euro ranges. Buyers are particularly interested in properties that offer high-quality finishes, ample privacy, and good transportation links, even if they aren’t located in central areas.

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Jack Della Maddalena will take "vicious intentions" into his first UFC welterweight title defence in New York City this weekend, believing his boxing will carry him to victory over the more fancied Islam Makhachev.

Della Maddalena [18-2] will attempt to deny Makhachev [27-1] the honour of being the UFC's 11th two-division champion when the two fighters meet inside the Octagon at UFC 322.

But he faces a mighty challenge to do so, with Makhachev having long maintained he would be more comfortable at welterweight, while the Dagestani is also riding the longest active UFC win streak at 15.

Della Maddalena will defend his welterweight crown when he takes on former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night (Sunday AEDT).

De Minaur beats Fritz for first ATP Finals win

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

TURIN, Italy — Alex de Minaur claimed a maiden ATP Finals victory that gave the Australian a chance of making the semifinals on Thursday.

De Minaur beat Taylor Fritz 7-6 (3), 6-3 for his first victory in six matches at the season-ending event for the top eight players, following his debut last year.

The seventh-seeded De Minaur needed a straight sets win to stay in contention for a semifinal spot, which he will secure if Carlos Alcaraz beats Lorenzo Musetti in the late match on Thursday.

Alex de Minaur desperately needs a pick-me-up in what could well prove his last match of the season when he faces Taylor Fritz while still seeking his first ever victory in the ATP Finals.

Even a straight-sets triumph over the American world no.4 on Thursday may well not be enough for the dejected Australian to somehow squeeze his way into the last-four of the end-of-season championship in Turin.

Will there be a Dispatch season 2? What the developers have said

With the final Dispatch episodes out now, fans of the episodic superhero workplace comedy will now be wondering “Will there be a Dispatch season 2?”

We’re right there with you, so we’ve taken a look at what the developers AdHoc have said to try and figure that out!

As well as scouring the web to see what the devs have said, we have also received an official statement from the horse's mouth.

With such a stellar cast, it’s hardly a surprise that Dispatch has been such a big hit, with fans clamouring for more.

But with all that said, read on for our Dispatch news dispatch!

My ‘Dispatch’ Ending Was Great, Minus Irritating Bad Luck

Dispatch has just aired its final two episodes, concluding its first “season” that may be followed by a second, given the unexpectedly huge success of the game.

Now that I’ve finished the story, I can say that Dispatch is cemented in my top 5 games of the year, and that’s in a very crowded year full of excellent releases. This is almost entirely because of the story and voicework, and less because of the gameplay, which I’ll get to in a minute.

This is going to get into spoilers for one specific ending. There are many, many variants of these by the end, depending on both your choices and in some cases, luck, but this is how mine shook out:

‘Dispatch’ Star Aaron Paul on Season 2 Plans for AdHoc’s Hit New Episodic Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Video Game

AdHoc Studio‘s choose-your-own-adventure-style video game “Dispatch” launched its final two installments Wednesday, giving the more than 1 million players who have purchased copies a conclusion to the superhero workplace comedy. Of course, given that the path a player chooses to take affects the story they get, it’s hard to talk specific spoilers about the multiple possible endings.

However, no matter the path you took, Aaron Paul (who stars in the game as the voice of Robert Robertson, a.k.a. Mecha Man) told Variety there’s a chance for more — and that was before “Dispatch” launched its first two episodes Oct. 22 to rave reviews and sales.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer confirms Rosalina and Bowser Jr. are in the sequel

Following a teaser in September that confirmed the movie’s title, Nintendo and animation studio Illumination unleashed the first proper trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in a dedicated Nintendo Direct. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the highest-grossing movie based on video games, will hit theaters in the US on April 3.

The trailer opens with Bowser engaging in a little art therapy, which, honestly, could be really great for him. Mario can’t help put put down Bowser’s artwork, though. What a jerk. From there, the action riffs on Super Mario Galaxy as Peach and Toad use launch stars to travel to a different planet. I don’t want to give away everything that happens, so just watch the trailer. The visuals, as you’d expect from Illumination, look terrific.
